Where Do I Begin? Well I had booked in for 10 people and was put on the list for 7PM. The GM had showed me the table we were going to be given over against a wall however a small family was finishing their meals. After an hour and a half wait were were seated elsewhere in the center of the restaurant. By this time the three children we had with us were extremely hungry. As an apology for waiting so long the waitress offered us free breads which did not come for over a half hour until we had to ask for the bread. With the noise from the large crowds around us and with the restaurant music blaring you could barely understand what the person next to you was saying let alone the waitress belting out the nights specials! I had requested to be moved to an open table over by the wall where we were originally supposed to be seated. I thought it would be much easier to hear each other if we weren’t in the center of the room. The waitress simply said the table was being given to another group and they’ve already given us free bread and lowered the music volume…. LOWERED the music volume?! I would have loved to know how loud it was earlier if they had already lowered the volume. I felt like I was at a concert the music was so loud. We asked the waitress for some water as we waited for the meals. She must have forgotten so we asked another waitress who brought us some water. I noticed the children at our table were getting very tired at around 8:45PM (still no food) and children at the other tables were coloring… would have been nice if someone offered the kids that… I asked the waitress for some coloring for the kids (which the waitress also forgot about and we never got any the whole night) After another 45min we finally were served our overpriced meals close to 10PM. Every one was served their meals except one of the children. We brought this to the waitresses attention and she apologized as it was given to another customer by accident. This was taken off the bill. The food was average but definitely overpriced. Chicken was on the dry side. Portions were smaller then they’ve been in the past. It was a long 3 1/2hour night… I think my ears are still ringing from the music 2 weeks later… Will NOT go back.

Four of us went as our experience of Lone Star around the country had been excellent until now, sorry Lone Star Petone, we will not come back. Average service and tasteless food, very disappointing with prices that are way over the top for what was delivered.

The food, was what you expect from Lone Star, however the meals have got smaller and the floor staff are pleasant, which i can not say from who must be the on site manager, he is rude, loud and pushy and makes the whole experience unpleasant. having been here a few times, I won’t be returning, I gave you three chances to appreciate the revenue I was bringing, but sorry on strike three you’re out..

Food cooked to perfection and we loved the portion sizes! Service was friendly and efficient and all 6 of us would happily recommend and come back again. Loved my lassoo of hog. Only gripe is, my father ordered the salmon and his meal was much smaller than the rest of ours, even though his was the most expensive. Perhaps, a side of salad or vegetables could be added?

We have been here several times now and I have to say we are never sure whether it is going to be very good. The quality is a bit erratic, but when it is on form, it is great. I have to agree that the amount of salad and wedges could be reduced but the steaks and chicken are great and our son absolutely loves it!

We have had mixed experiences with our visits here. Lone Star are notorious for their large meals – and I like that they have brought in some “smaller meals” (still more than I could eat.) We have had some issues with consistency – from cold potatoes to a very spicy children’s nachos. They are always happy to give you a voucher to make amends – though it is limited and comes with conditions. All in all – good meals, but overrated, and not worth the price paid.

My hubby loves the sirloin steak, ordered medium rare it arrives juicy and beautifully cooked. The choice of sauces are lovely – the jack daniels and black pepper being his favourite. I find the chicken selections delicious, however if you order the Cajun chicken, expect it to be cajun = hot!
We do find the buffalo chips to be excessive, also you’re never sure if the potatoes are going to be any good, thus what arrives are generally soft and unappealing. However, brought to the staffs attention, they are quick to remedy with either freshly cooked replacements or a choice of fries. Generally most of the potatoes are left on the plate – as a result we have switched to choosing the fries when ordering instead. We do think that the portion size of the Lonestar coleslaw could be down sized too. Generally the meat disappears and the potatoes and slaw left behind can cause a wee negative reaction in regards to price and would prefer to have say 2 chicken breasts as the standard serving with less of the potato and slaw instead.
Our family also enjoy the Lonestar loaf, however last visit found it wasnt up to its usual crusty outside self – possibly an off night?

Generally our kids love going to Lonestar and always enjoy the colouring in offered, friendly staff, and seeing their picture put up on the wall for all to see when we leave. Great for family dining – shame it isnt featured in the Entertainment book?

First time we came here it was awful. Took well over an hour to get our food, and it was average. They did explain it was because it was Valentines Day and they were very busy. So what! Hire more staff or let people know you can’t serve all the tables in the restaurant and don’t keep sitting them.

Have given them a second chance and it was much better. Based on that we gave them a third go and they performed then as well. Both times good food and service.

Went in for my birthday, and as a vegetarian I probably should have chosen something a little less carnivorous! But never the less thought that based on the generous portions of their meat dishes I could expect the same kind of abundance… wrong.
I ordered the roast vegetable salad ($23.50) which consisted of 1 small piece of pumpkin, 4 bits of beetroot, 1 piece each of red & green capsicum, some feta, and the rest was rocket tossed in an aioli dressing with pine nuts. Now if it had been $12 I would have felt like I was getting good value for money, but next to the other amazing looking plates on the table for a similar price I just felt ripped off. Plus I had to ask the waitress where my dinner was after the rest of my table had been happily munching away for 10 minutes.
After the meal I ended up pinching left over chips from everyone else’s overflowing plates as I was still hungry. I thought all would be redeemed by an amazing dessert, but unfortunately the lovely waitresses description of the ‘white chocolate pudding with a butterscotch sauce and ice cream’ was more like a hot dry tasteless muffin with a suggestion of some kind of sauce. The place was really busy for a Tues night (what recession..) so you don’t go there for an intimate evening, or apparently if you are a vegetarian… The service was very friendly and attentive, and the rest of my table had a great value for money meal – but they aren’t writing this review – so 3 stars from me.

Much the same as the other Lone Star restaurants, although the one thing I do have to give them credit for is my steak was perfectly well done. It wasnt over done, just well done – which is really hard to achieve, as anyone who has ever tried BBQing at home can atest to.

I have a perceieved review conflict of interest in that I know one of the cooks … but I’d tell her if her food sucked regardless. On this particular night she wasnt cooking, so conflict of interest free.

Being one of the newer restaurants in this chain, and one of only two servicing a population of 300,000+ people in the greater Wellington region – expect it to be busy, and expect to wait in the bar for a table (as you do with most other Lone Stars) if youre dining during regular dinner hours.

If watching what you eat isn’t an issue, except for enjoying seeing it vanish from your plate, then I would recommend that you try the Kahlua/Mars Cheesecake – one is easily shared between two, because its a bit rich – but its very good! (but very bad!)

We are still full from a huge meal, even though we have a takeaway box of leftovers in the fridge! Cooked exceptionally well, with huge sized portions and good service, this was a fantastic evening out.
