Rude. Arrogant. Patronizing. Inadequate. Definitely not “fine espresso” – we’ve had better in airport lounges.

A man whom we think was the manager (50-60 year old balding man) charged us $8 for a “double espresso”. That’s right. EIGHT DOLLARS!! Plus 15% surcharge for the public holiday.

Coffee prices were not printed on the drinks menu, so we were unable to check the price before ordering. We’ve never paid more than $4 for an espresso doppio before in NZ, so used this as a benchmark. When the manager produced the invoice (the “espressio doppio” was essentially an over-extracted, weak, long black), we had bill shock.

Not only did he not know what a double espresso was (he said “one espresso is $4; double means two, which is $8″ and condescendingly showed us the single-spout portafilter and double-spout portafilter as if to establish justification for the double charge) but his colleagues – including a waiter, chef and kitchen hand – came out in support of us, saying at most we should have been charged an extra 50c for the additional shot.

They (not the manager) offered to make an additional espresso for free, but they were unable to offer a refund, given the manager was the only one authorised to do so. By this stage, he had stormed off and was waiting outside the front door to rip off more hapless victims. We definitely were not in the mood for more coffee, so left completely dissatisfied.

Avoid this over-priced dungeon. Our conversations with the staff betrayed a toxic culture; not even taking into account the actual product on offer. Would prefer to give a ZERO STAR RATING if possible.

I came here with a voucher few weeks ago. Of course I had read the reviews already so my expectations were pretty low if not a bit fearful.

Being a vegetarian I was planning to get a vege pizza but had seen bad reviews on it so I rang and asked the staff what vege options were available. When he said “he’ll be back shortly” I knew he was not familiar with the menu so my expectations for the outcome worsened.

I ended up getting the two other vegetarian pizzas I can’t remember the name, and I said I’ll pick it up 30 minutes earlier than I planned to arrive cuz I didnt’ want to end up waiting like the other reviewers.

When i arrived they had done the pizza and the staff kindly asked me if I wanted a serviett which i thought was suprisingly warm. But he had a blank look to him as if he had seen a ghost but I can assure you I’m not that bad looking. The ambience was nice so it’s a shame we didn’t have the pizza here since half of the price came from the sea-view location.

So the pizza was good, too much cheese I would’ve felt but value for the money since I brought the coupons. I thought the pizzas were done just right, it was woodfired and had a chew to them as with pre-fermented doughs, but not as impressive as pizzas around the same price in Auckland city, but for a mission bay prize I thought they were the best since I’ve tried other pizzas in mission bay before which were far below average.

I would give it a 7/10 for the experience and 7.2/10 for the pizzas,

I should have read the reviews before we went. This place is shocking. We went to Lunna Rossa last nite for a quck meal before going to the movies. The menu looked good and reasonably priced. So in we went. My first impression of the watress was she has no oomph! She finally came back to take our order and she had no personality, when I asked what the fish of the day was I go a one word answer. We were not told of any specials of the day. I ordered the Chicken Crepes. My husband had Chicken Fettucine. His meal was okay, mine was only edible. The presentation was appalling. One Crepe that was not a crepe more like a wrap that had been microwaved and gone dry & tough, a blob of sloppy mashed potatoes, some shredded lettuce (yellow inner leaves) and a small wedge of tomato. We were still hungry so we decided on desert. We had to ask for the menu as no one had bothered to come back. I ordered the Chocolate Cake with chocolate sauce. I asked the waiter if the the Chocolate cake was like a mud cake consistency and he said “Yes” As I am a choc a holic & love my Mud cake, I wanted to make sure. My husband had the Apricot Crepe. His crepe came with tinned uncooked apricots and some sort of sauce. My “Mud Cake” was a piece of chocolate cake the was flat, hard, dry and tasted like a packet mix cake. I sent it back. The waiter just stood there and said nothing, no apology only asked me if I wanted something else. I said no thank you. The table next to us had a problem with their pizza’s things missing and late delivery. A customer came in to pick up a pizza with a voucher and was being charged the regular price he complained and refused to buy it. No apology was given to either customers. What is up with this place???? How does it make money??? It needs new Staff & a new chef, someone who knows how to prepare, cook, and present a meal & better ingredients. Not worth the money. I will not be going back ever. Who owns this restuarant?? At least the movie was good!!! I have to give it 1 star because it won’t let me submit my review if I don’t, but it doesn’t deserve one!

I think this place should shut down. The service was shocking. The food was awful as my partner got the Seafood marinara and it arrived after the rest of our party had finished eating and the mussels weren’t cooked. Again customer service was SHOCKING so was the food.
This place unfortunately doesn’t even deserve a star.

Unfortunately I too have to join the masses below in saying this is a place to avoid at all measures. Even with the discount voucher I got online I felt totally ripped off. This place has to serve the WORST pizzas in New Zealand. Its like they have copied the menu off a fancy pizza restaurant and have no idea what is on their own menu. I ordered the vegetarian pizza, and didn’t taste any of the tomato base, pesto or feta! In fact the wood-fired veges were mushroom and olives! My husband had the tandori chicken pizza with yoghurt and chutney. There was no yoghurt and the chutney sauce had a striking resemblance to plain tomato sauce… The chicken, well you needed a microscope to find any it was cut so finely cut. The service was even more shocking than the pizza. I think the guy must work at the morgue. These people cannot cook and obviously do not enjoy service. Time to shut shop guys!

One star is too good for this place. Went here last week with a voucher. When I arrived, I was ignored and when the waiter finally deigned to speak to me, he just looked at me and said ’40 minutes’ when I told him I had a voucher. After telling him that I actually wanted a table, not a takeaway, I seated myself. The vegetarian pizza was probably one of the worst pizzas I’ve ever eaten. Woodfired veges were actually boiled carrots, broccoli & cauliflower, no sign of the promised pesto or woodfired anything. Tandoori chicken was slightly better but still not good. We ordered a tomato salad which was supposed to have feta & balsamic vinegar on it, and had neither. When we asked for some balsamic, the salad was taken away and drowned in oil. The waiter didn’t speak English very well, so I gave up at that point. When we declined to take the leftover pizza away with us at the end of the meal, the waiter, after acting like there was something wrong with us for not wanting to, asked if there was anything wrong. When I told him it wasn’t very nice, he commented something along the lines of ‘no one else has said that before’ and then promptly ignored us for the rest of the time we were there. So not only was the food quite horrendous and not as described, the service was shocking as well. Will avoid this place at all costs.

Went here tonight as we had a voucher to use. We were expecting a nice night out at Mission Bay but we were very disappointed.

The service was shocking, when we walked in there was an argument going on at the counter between the staff which was very awkward to be standing there having to listen to and not be served. The older man who served us just frowned was not in a good mood it seemed and definitely did not make us feel welcome.

Vegetariana pizza had no flavour, nor did I see any mozzarella cheese or pesto flavour, or the feta…

Very very disappointed. Would not recommend and will not be going back thank god we had a voucher so didn’t pay the full price.

One of my favourite little spots, really convenient in Mission Bay and yummy yummy pizza and great coffee. I tried the vegetarian, it had the nicest woodfired veges and pesto, yum, will be back thanks:) Strange to see the other single bad comments here, are these comments from a bad day and trying to take it out on others?…or just nasty heard some bad staff had left Lunna Rossa. Anyway I’ve always had a great time and food at Lunna Rossa! I hope MenuMania becomes a bit more professional with their diners and checking validity, as well as checking their filtering system which seems to catch the ‘wrong’ reviews, no point in seeing great places go out of business for defamatory remarks made online hmm.

I went to this restaurant tonight with my husband and two sons. I was absolutely starving by the time the pizzas arrived after 1.5 hours of waiting. We ordered garlic bread which was dry and tasteless, plus three pizzas. One was a vegetariana, described as wood-fired with roasted vegetables and feta. It was completely tasteless and dry with a few bits of steamed or boiled carrot and broccoli on top. I could not taste any cheese or pizza sauce. I was shocked by how awful it was. The tandori chicken pizza was ok according to my husband and boys, probably saved by the bought tandori sauce and sour cream dressing. the Kiwiana pizza was not that great, they said. I cannot believe this place are still in business. Several other couples were complaining about waiting times. I will never go there again.

The service in this restaurant is diabolical. If you do not have the capacity to cook for the amount of diners sitting down, why accept more in? what gives you the right to expect people to wait 2 hours for food?. No apologies for the delays, or free drinks/nibbles to keep you going.
Would never go there again, embarrassed that any visitors to NZ may go there and think this is the norm. The waiters were rude, one person complained about waiting for 1 hr for his food and the chef started yelling at him !! They had 5 tables complain within the time we were there ! one couple left before the mains arrived and were met with a barrage of abuse ! will never ever go there again and i would certainly not recommend this terrible place to anyone…and to boot the pizza was the worst we have ever had.

We were attracted to the reasonable prices on the menu. There were 4 at our table and our order was taken -2 pizzas and a range of entree size dishes. The Siciliana pizza had no capers – menu said it came with capers. We asked for the pepper grinder – it never came! 2 of us ordered mushrooms – they never came! We were charged for the mushrooms on the bill. When we confronted the chef regarding the missing capers, pepper, mushrooms he was belligerent and said “I’m not listening”. There was no apology. Another table of 3 walked out and we had observed a mistake made by the waiter at another table. How does this place exist?? We will never go back and we will advise others to never dine at this place! One bad experience!

Rang up beforehand and told there would be no surcharge but low behold they charged 15% anyway

The food was very ordinary indeed. Quite disappointing! Nothing out of the ordinary. The best thing was the coffee

Worst ever!!!

Worst services from worst waitresses.
Well, I wont say worst food because after waiting 1+ hours along the table, we (9 of us) were not able to get a tinny piece of food. None has come and said a word of apology.
I would use RIDICULOUS to describe the night that my friends and I spent (Valentine’s Day) at this place.
Would I visit again? Over my dead body!!!

We went here on Friday night 29/10/10, and we were very surprised with the arrogance and pushy way of the waiter, he came to us to take our orders, and let us clearly known that he wasn’t happy with our order and pushed for bigger order.
I asked him if he is working on commission.

So I don’t like to get pushed to spend more money even if I like to.

This was our first and last visit to this venue.

Stopped by with my family for a casual late Sunday lunch, we had garlic pizza bread and a large BBQ chicken pizza. Service was swift and polite, the food was lovely and very competitively priced.

Subsequent to my visit I lost my cellphone, we retraced our steps to the restaurant and the management were very helpful and accommodating, even offering me the use of one of their phones to phone mine in an attempt to locate it.

Happy ending, I got my phone back and this type of attitude, plus all the standard factors, leave me no choice but to recommend Lunna Rossa very highly.

2 Stars, average & generous I may add. I guess I came on a good day. I suspect it’s owned by the same tree swingers that have the place next door. Keep going!
