Madly British is Dunedin’s funky new restaurant with a perfectly executed British theme.
Owner Ronnie Bhogal, has embraced the British concept right down to the mushy peas, cucumber sandwiches, HP sauce, toad in a hole, and an English-style curry.

During the big earthquake of 2011, Ronnie Bhogal’s Christchurch restaurants (Two Fat Indians) were all sadly destroyed.
The silver lining is that Ronnie has turned his attention to Dunedin, with Madly British being the result!

Madly British proudly supports several charities. Including strong support of local cricket and rugby, as well as raising money for the Breast Cancer Foundation. For every coffee brought at Madly British, a $1 is donated to the foundation, and $3 for every high tea. Ronnie hopes to raise $50,000 for the foundation by October 2012.

With such a diverse menu, Madly British has three chefs, each with a set of complimentary specialist skills, so diners get the best flavours from each dish.

Between ‘table-numbers’ being replaced by pics of British icons, (eg Mr Bean!), and Queen Victory Sponge Cake, an extensive range of teas, including the specially invented Prince William and Kate’s wedding tea blend, plus the ever-popular tea loaf.

Madly British boasts a tempting selection of local and imported beers (try the chocolate beer!).

I thought I saw “Roast of the Day” on their menu a few months back, so I visited one lunchtime, only to be met with a blank look, and “no, sorry, no roast”.
Then recently I noticed on MenuMania that someone had HAD a Roast of the Day. I rang and confirmed, seems they DO (and it was suggested that last time I visited perhaps they were just out of stock that day). I asked if available Mon-Fri and was told no, Tue-Fri. Their menu and info on here says 7 days.

Well, sorry, I’m really not going to bother going thru all the hoops again. :-(

This place came highly recommended from many of my friends, so I thought it would be a good idea to check it out. When we walked in we were very warmly welcomed by a smiley waitress who took us to our table I had previously booked. I ordered the bangers and mash, and my husband ordered the lamb shacks. It came out in good time and we were very impressed! The food was divine and my husband thoroughly enjoyed his meal too. We passed on desert, but next time we go around I will be sure to try their sponge cake.

I can’t agree more with the comment made by Lynda. Their high tea was a joke. We paid $50 for four of us (this was supposed to be a half price deal) and got a cup of tea each (made from a bag) and a selection of finger food that was hardly enough for two people. No sandwiches, no scones. And overall the food was mediocre. (they served us biscuits obviously bought in a supermarket). Also their advertising was false. They said it was a half price deal but they did not actually have this on their menu at all.

Went to HighTea at Madly British. Found the experience rather disappointing. The pot of tea was fine. But we then waited 40 minutes for the cakes etc to arrive. (after half an hour my daughter enquired as to whether they were going to be long).
I asked for more hot water and had a cup of lukewarm weak tea with my food. There were no egg sandwiches as advertised. There were supermarket small pavlovas not advertised. There was a small bowl of jam…..not sure what for, some tired looking wee cakes and the tomato sandwiches and cucumber ones were very plain. On top of that there were no side plates.
All in all an unusual experience.

We will not be returning to Madly British. For the entree our table ordered the Garlic Bread, Soup of the Day, and the Chicken Salad. Firstly, the soup was cold and had obviously been sitting a while as it had a skin on top. The chicken salad had no croutons as stated on the menu, no dressing, and veges that were well past their best. The garlic bread was your budget supermarket ones that had clearly been frozen as there was evidence of freezer burn.

For mains we ordered the Porterhouse Steak, Roast of the Day, and Prawn Tower. The steak was cooked well under what was ordered, and the potato bake that came with it was near on raw. The Prawn Tower was just odd, with prawns and puff pastry biscuits sitting on a puddle of what was clearly the same pumpkin soup our friend had as her entree. The menu stated the Prawn Tower came with a “Butternut Pumpkin Veloute” but after tasting the pumpkin soup earlier it was obvious it was the same product. Our friend who had the roast of the day felt it was ok – although she was looking forward to an authentic yorkshire pudding but what she received was far from it.

Before ordering, we also had to ask for the wait staff to inform us what the Roast of the Day and Soup of the Day were. No information was offered without us having to ask.

We felt we should give Madly British one star, however, as the wait staff, with best intentions i’m sure, offered us a voucher for a free main meal each. Although, why they think we would go through that experience again we will never know.

We dined out at this restaurant both evenings we stayed in dunedin. The food was second to none and there was plenty of it. We ate about 6pm and there was room but it might be best to book to make sure you get a table.

Took the family to Madly British and though my son enjoyed his Toad in the hole I myself would question whether chucking 3 Yorkshire puddings onto a bangers and mash dish would qualify this as being a “Toad in the hole”. My fish and chips were ok and it was nice to have the malt vinegar and mushy peas and both my girls seemed happy with the chips. However the Pea, pie & Pud that the Missus ordered was a real let down, the pie was your standard mince not steak very similar to those bought in supermarket packs and was very gristley and overcooked, nothing more British than a Kiwi pie. The waitress was pleasant and did her job nicely. There is nothing worse than selling yourself as being Madly British and doing it badly if you are going to put such items on a menu do it right or don’t do it at all.

Monday night 5 Dec

first time diners at this establishment and what a surprise in store for us. The food superb, the portions enormous, Bangers & Mash, and Steak with roast veg, and REAL onion rings!!! The steak cooked just the way he asked for it to be. Dessert of Chocolate Bread & Butter pudding finished the meal., well so huge the serving that couldn’t be finished!! A group of about 10 were the other upstairs diners, and while others thought them noisy and didn’t stay,, we enjoyed their exuberance….who wants silence.
Suggestions, if there was a suggestion box, maybe a choice of smaller servings, as well as enormous. Maybe a drawer OR table to hold cutlery upstairs so the steak knife arrives with the steak, and cutlery with dessert, always a good thing. The staff were helpful and friendly, and we enjoyed the experience. A group of us recently dined here and several of us chose the Churchill set menu. This comprised curly fries, cornish pasty, roast of the day, dessert, and coffee for around $37. Our wait for the starters was overly long, at least an hour. While the fries were OK, my cornish pasty was without filling and not fully cooked. Upon complaining I was told that they are sourced from elsewhere! I was offered a replacement but chose instead the onion bhaji. The wait to receive this was way too long. As for the main, the roast of the day was appalling: portion sizes differed between all of us; the meat was thin, dry, and tasteless, with my portion about 1 1/2 slices; and the vegetable component very lacklustre and far from generous (the spuds though were good). Go to The Bog for a better roast. The dessert was much better and the hot chocolate ok. The waiter was friendly and apologetic but service was hit and miss – need to ask about drinks and supply water more frequently. Upon complaining about the food, I was offered a free voucher for coffee. Madly British has a long way to go to improve and I will probably only venture back to try their breakfast which I’m informed from a friend was very good or for dessert.

Had a very nice meal here this week – our first visit (for a family meal). Lovely building, opposite the old Central Post Office in Dunedin. The British theme I can take or leave (maybe because I’m British!), but the place has a nice, bright feel to it. It was a pretty quiet Monday night, but the waiter was very friendly, the food was really nice. We had three different mains between us – roast of the day, something called ‘jalousies’ (I think – it was roast veg and blue cheese in a puff pastry casing – yum!), and hot pot – all very good. A couple of us had desserts too – bread and butter pudding, which went down well. All in all a very satisfactory evening and will definitely go back. Check it out!

we go out for lunch regularly and today decided to try the new British restaurant. Very attentive service and a sensibly priced menu with a good variety. We loved the colourful decor, white linen napkins, beautifully presented meals. Coffee and tea were also well made, with polished tea spoons on the saucers.
Worth another visit.
