Preserves, chutneys & sauces are also made here with fruit from the cafe’s own estate.

My partner & I have driven past the Mainline Station many times, always meaning to stop in for a look. The 3 March 2012 was a very cold, wet & blustery day & we thought “why not today?!”

We entered to a warm atmosphere & were pleased it was also warm enough to remove our jackets straight away :) The selection of food was plentiful & I was delighted with my gluten free choice of tomato & pumpkin soup with gluten free bread that I actually enjoyed eating :)

The service was quick & friendly, the coffe was fantastic and we will definitely be stopping in again.

Can I say, don’t be fooled by the lack of cars in the car park. This place is well worth taking the time to stop in. Plus the scenery is much nicer than those in Cheviot .. even on a yucky day :)

We thoroughly recommend a stop off for a snack here, or even to make a special trip for an afternoon. The Mainline Station is a prize piece of Kiwiana, and the service, environment and food are exceptional. Well done to the owners and staff.
We first stopped here during a return trip to Chch from Kaikoura, and made a point of returning recently just to enjoy it again. Located just south of Domett, near to Cheviot, the cafe has ample parking just off SH1. The cafe cherishes its history as the original railway station, with a number of photos and other exhibits from its past. With fine weather you can sit in the rear garden, which is perfect relaxing setting in a well cared and colourful garden. Walking through the gate there is a pond with ducks and swans to enjoy.
We ordered a ploughmans platter and toastie with salad. Both exceeded our expecations with a variety of ingredients, all very fresh and arranged with care and thought. Other visitors also seemed pleased with the service they received.
Great place, and looking forward to the next excuse to visit.

Went for a drive on Saturday and ended up here. It was stinking hot so had an iced coffee and a piece of carrot cake. Well the iced coffee was just how I like it… made with ice cream and tasting of fabulous coffee and the carrot cake was to die for! moist, dark, rich and spicy! I enjoyed it so much I took a piece home! Will be returning!

After some research we discovered this comment was left by the chef of a rival cafe close to us. Unfortunately this person has made more false comments about other business in the area,(which can be so detrimental to a business) we only wish MenuMania had a way…    More »
