Very disappointing! Advertised as FAT oysters our decision to eat there was based on that claim. The 12 oysters we ordered could have fit in my left hand and were less than fresh. As a Kiwi I resent being ripped off in this manner. My advice… try down the road.

I don’t know about the “World Famous Fish & Chips” They do make nice Fish and Chips, but no better than alot of other places. Back in the day, you could pick your own fish out to be cooked. Now you get the only type of Fish they are cooking on the day. If they are cooking Blue Nose, that’s it. No say in the matter. Even my local Fish and Chip shop gives a choice of at least four types of Fish they are cooking. When you see Tourist buses parked outside and signs up in the shop saying that buses get preference over everyone else because they have a schedule to keep, then you know you are in a Tourist trap getting ripped off. They are riding off the back of historical success from earlier competitions they have won, but have done nothing since. I think their last win or even placing they had was close to ten years ago. If they are so good, then why aren’t they winning the awards now as voted by the public. There is a Whangarei Fish and Chip shop(I won’t name it because everyone will then think I’m biased)who only just recently took out the award for Northlands top Fish and Chip shop for the forth time in a row. Where was Mangonui Fish Shop if they are supposed to be so good? I know where, feeding all the foreign tourists that make up most of their customers who have all gone home come voting time.

After having gone to the wrong shop earlier I made a return trip to the area to try out these world famous fish & chips.
Sorry but after hearing so much hype about this place I can not understand what all the fuss is about, this place obviously rides the wave of historical success.
The service was fantastic, but I went for the fish and chips which were nothing short of disappointing. Whilst the portion and taste of chips was good the fish portion was small, very greasy and off putting…. Never again

I think this Fish & Chips shop lives only from their listings in Lonely Planet and other tourist guides. If people say it is the best Fish & Chips in the world then they have never had any good one. The batter is soggy, the chips are soft and under-cooked and the prices are ridiculous. Try the other F&C shops in Mangonui and compare! World famous? Yeah Right!

We heard of this “world famous” fish and chips so we went there for a try.. um frankly speaking, nothing special about it and they was not cheap. It tasted ok, the fish was fresh.. Lots of other shops do better fish and chips..

disappointing. Friendly service but food average. Fish at 59.90 per kilo should have been beautiful. It was not. Third visit. Same result. Coopers Beach takeaways do it better
For the last 13 years, every 6 months or so we take a roady up to Cable Bay and always pop past here for the fish n chips. The service has always been great and the food is faultless. You haven’t tried fish n chips until you’ve been here. Awesome. Keep up the good work.

yup. I agree. Best fish n chips perhaps in the entire world… better than London these days. But try them with traditional malt vinegar people. It’s the best!

Visited about a month ago. The food tasted amazing, so fresh, along with an awesome view and a cold beer. Watch out for the gorgeous young blond behind the bar!
This is one fish and chip restaurant/cafe that has it all right, from the perfect fresh fish battered perfectly to the free fresh lemon slices, and the excellent coffee machine in the dining area. I have brought visiting friends and family from overseas here, and more recently clients on my landyachting adventures. The place is famous with good reason. Here’s a hint; try your chips with a light drizzling of lemon juice – it’s a favourite of mine

We eat here all the time for our fish n chips and even thought it is a 2hr round trip from home, its worth it on a summer’s evening. Take all our guests there and recommend it to anyone who will listen.
Favourite fish is blue nose and usually two bits of fish and some chips are more than enough for one person. Fresh lemon is provided but you will have to pay for the bread (white or brown) and tomato sauce.
Have met several people who just love it too.
Food and service very good.
Love the place – with special views across the harbour:)

I had the pleasure of being taken to lunch at the world famous Mangonui Fish Shop, last week. It would have to be the freshest fish I have ever eaten. This licensed fish & chippery is built on piles out over the harbour and has fantastic views. The place was humming and had a great atmosphere. The draft beer was lovely and cold and had a good head on it. I will be making it my business to return one day.
