The food is simple but fresh and excellent and I love the fact that I get to choose my own cut of meat and the sides to go with it.
My husband chose the $38 mixed grill which although a little pricey, was so big he didn’t finish it (and he ALWAYS finishes a meal, especially one from a restaurant). Wine and desserts great as well. Recommended for couples and groups (although vegetarians my find it hard).

I could blather on about who owns it and where they’ve sprung from but really….woteva…they’ve got it sorted.
Marvel Grill say they celebrate the food heroes of N Z and it’s their mission to procure the very best meat products available.
I’d say they are succeeding.
The staff are as good as it gets, equal to Rocco, Ponsonby Bistro or Prego. High praise.
It was a special occasion.
The four of us had downed a couple of bottles of decent champagne a little earlier in the day so while we waited for a table tried the Nevis Bluff Otago Pinot Gris (07) by the glass($8.50), from the imaginative, surprisingly well priced list.
The clientele had more than a smattering of recognisable North Harbour football hunks on this wet, cold Friday evening so “spot the ex AB” game kept us amused during our 45 minute wait.
The menu is vast so here is a sample.
From the Larder. Includes marinated olives, extraordinary Chicken liver pate, Bluff oysters.
Hot skillets. An inventive tapas type list including mixed grill and mixed seafood grill.
Hamburgers. The guys at the next table devoured theirs with gusto.
From The Grill. Ah….yes, it’s a helluva grill. Choose skewers, meat, chicken or fish. Select sauce or butter, and a choice of sides.
My trad Eye Fillet with Bearnaise was a revelation.
Hapuka with garlic aioli another.
My beloved, California born, ordered onion rings served with Bloody Mary Sauce and said they were the best he’d had in 40 years.
Maybe ever.
Fries and Watercress salad with Manchego shavings were both exceptional.
The Chocolate liquid centre Pudding was well above average but the Creme Brulee with Raspberry coulis was the only bum note.
I am ever in search of the Creme de la Creme Brulee and this one disappoined. Grainy custard, not smooth and silky, though the flavour was delicious.
But five stars in spite of this aberration. Marvel Grill is better than four stars!
It is busy, noisy, fun, good value and a treasure.
Hallelujah.
