Have been here quite a few times for coffee and cake which have been nice. decided to go for breakfast, what a mistake. my friend ordered crepes which looked as though they had been dropped on the floor, compot was horribly sweet and tasted floury, cream was over-wiped to the point of being butter, my meal which came out well after my friends was scrambled eggs on toast, they came out with chives in them even though menu didn’t state this, eggs were well over cooked bacon well overdone, was almost like leather.
Will not be back

Lovely home made tasty food. Always something different to eat and always delicious. Some things are a bit pricey and it gets quite crowded sometimes but staff are pretty onto it and get things out in a reasonable amount of time. Would reccomend for sunday brekkie!

We thought we would do for a nice brunch a couple of Sundays ago. we arrived at 9.30 am. We found a table in amongst the chaos and sat and waited… eventually a very nice waitress came to take our order. we explained we had not been there before and did not know the process. She subsequently explained the process and gave us our menus. We ordered our meal and asked for an OJ and coffee while we waited. Coffees arrived after 30 mins (no sign of OJ). Our meal arrived another 30 mins later. the food was alright but I have had better. we wanted to order another coffee but couldn’t spare the wait. There was a huge queue at the checkout to pay the bill. we left at 11.35am! we won’t bother again

Went here on the weekend for brunch and just loved it! Staff were great, and the food cabinets looked absolutely amazing.

Had the bruscetta (sp), and my partner had a full cooked breakfast – both were brilliant, and the coffee was just fantastic – so good we had to have another….

We sat in the courtyard on the side, and the only thing I can comment on that needs a slight improve is the wobbly tables.

Will be back to try the tapas FOR SURE – its money well spent.

For all the good reviews I have to say I was extremely disappointed. I have visited here before once at night for tapas & once during the day. The experiences were ok but not great but I decided to give it another go given all the great reviews.

When we arrived we were ignored for some time until I went to the counter to ask for menus & to wipe our table. The food options were fairly limited unless you wanted a cake or breakfast. We were told the meal came with garnish & relish which it didn’t. Our meals came out at different times and my friend had nearly finished hers before i got mine. I’d have to say the food was average. Then to top it off we got charged for the wrong stuff & then found we were overcharged. Certainly wont be visiting here again, service is terrible & the food is average.

I feel this Cafe is going from strength to strength I am not a big food fan, when it comes to cafes, so can’t comment on there food. However, I felt that the coffee that I had was very well made, plus they have developed a very nice ambiance with the overall look of the place. Not to mention staff that actually smile!!!

There is another entry on this site for Clarence at Mavis, which is the same place. Not sure what the story is there.

However, the bottom line is that this is one of the better cafes in Hamilton, and definitely worth the visit. Cabinet food is great and displayed like a work of art! Other food is always of a very high standard.

The service is the best you will get anywhere.

Nice outdoors area (entry to this area via an internal door). There are also some tables in the car park!

Well worth the visit, and have been there several times. I’ll be back for more.

Thank you very much for your review Chris. “Clarence at Mavis” is our wine and tapas bar. The cafe converts to “Clarence” Wednesday – Saturday evenings from 5pm. We’re glad you enjoy Mavis&Co and hope to see you again soon!    More »

Visited this cafe for lunch. Was very busy and had to wait a long time to order food, once ordered the food came out quickly, however it seemed like it had been microwaved for a couple of minutes, which then made the food I chose (Chorizo Calzone) rubbery. The food did not impress me in this regard. The cabinet had a lot of choice, and the coffee was okay, not my favourite coffee in Hamilton but it wasn’t bad either. Food was staggered for everyone, and one persons food appeared to not be coming out and they had to get up to see if it was coming at all, luckily it was coming out just as we asked. Overall not as impressed as I thought I would be.

Amazing! I think I will run out of superlatives, the atmosphere, the staff, the service and I haven’t even got to the food or coffee. I travel a lot and I get to eat and “do coffees” at lots of places Mavis & Co is simply one of the best places I’ve been to! It’s got so much understated grace & elegance, a classy sophistication without being pretentious. Nelson needs you because I’d love Mavis & Co to be my local. Thanks. Now to the food & coffee. Spoilt for choice & quality. The mushrooms with breakfast taste like the field mushrooms my Nana (grandma) used to cook when I was a kid, it’s one of those tastes you think you will never have again as an adult, thank you for bringing it back. Your coffee is as good as it gets, I drink short blacks no sugar so no place to hide! Perfect.

Wow. I have never been in a place before where have so much trouble deciding what I want to eat! Everything looked fantastic, especially the cakes and desserts. Their raspberry brownie was delicious, and I will definitely be coming back again. Service was good too, even though the place was packed. Highly recommended.

Great place for a late lunch, was hard to decide but the bean & bacon quesadillas won and he couldn’t resist the blue cheese & mushroom risotto balls. The raspberry brownie and the lemon curd & coconut slice went down a treat with great, hot strong coffee. Will be coming back soon.
