I’ve never had “rude” service here. I am majorly addicted to their roasts which I come in and buy around 500gms a week. Some of the best if not best beans I’ve had in NZ. Maybe people complaining are used to Starbucks and fast food. Mazagran is the real deal as far as I’m concerned.
Why do we bother coming back to this place? We’ve been a number of times and whilst the coffee was good on one of our three visits in the past 6 weeks – it isn’t worth the consistent rudeness or lack of service. Our last visit yesterday morning will be our last visit ever. It was the first morning of the rugby world cup. A time we should be showcasing our country and delivering best possible product and service. We rock up at 9.54am. 6 mins before opening time. Fair enough, we’re happy to wait a few mins – it’s the only decent coffee place near our hotel. There a 4 other people waiting outside- caffeine addicts, like us. The female proprieter comes out to put out the outdoor furniture and my partner jokes about the smallish crowd being desperate for coffee. So instead of laughing along, she snaps back at us ‘ we don’t open til 10′ and storms back into the cafe. We were taken aback. So were another couple from England. The three other locals must be used to this, looked slightly embarrassed and waited to be let in. We didn’t bother, neither did the other couple. Is this how dunedin shows itself off to the world? How hard would it be to smile. Would the world have changed as we know it if the shop had opened 6 mins early with a cheerful greeting – I guess we will never know. Avoid this place. There’s good coffee to be found elsewhere

The best coffee in Dunedin but poor service. Wishes my favourite cafe could make coffee like Mazagran!
I have been lucky enough to try many different coffee places around NZ and there is only one place that sticks out when it comes to exceptional coffee that can not be criticized in any way and that is Mazagran. The atmosphere of this little shop is trendy and relaxed and with only a few different options for coffee and food, it shows they know what is good and how coffee SHOULD be! To top it off, they roast their own beans and sell them at a reasonable price and taste just as good at home as they do in the shop. I’d recommend visiting Mazagran to try it for yourself. You’ll get hooked. I did.

Whilst in Dunedin recently I, and my companion, visited Mazagran. The two of us gratefully enjoyed the coffee, service, ambience and tableware.
The casual and efficient service was a pleasure. The reading material provided was excellent and diverse. The chalkboard was entertaining. The sugar options, including muscovado, were served forth in enticing and unique studio tableware and were almost good enough to tempt us into including sweetness in our perfectly roasted and extracted coffees.
Whilst enjoying our two visits we observed many regulars either pop in to say hello, purchase some coffee to prepare at home or grab a freshly brewed fix on site. This sort of frequent visitation heralds a superior establishment.
We highly recommend a visit to Mazagran.

Visited with my parents and sister.
We were completely ignored for several minutes. When we were finally served someone just came to the counter and looked at us, pen and paper in hand.
My parents enjoyed their coffee but the completely substandard service left a bad taste in my mouth.

This place makes beautiful coffee! Absolutely perfect every time.
It is rather unfortunate that every time I go in there the person serving is disgustingly rude and service takes longer than necessary
