My experience with Mecca Stonehouse was absolutely impeccable. I organised my friends 21st birthday dinner to be here and the staff that I engaged with were absolutely wonderful. Not only did they cater to all 20 of us but they also helped me out a lot while we were at the restaurant. Being seated in the Anglican Mission House, we were amazed to see a row of tables all pre set up for us in an amazing environment. The staff allowed us enough time to ensure all guests had arrived and then to make decisions regarding our meals. They promptly took our orders (which was very difficult given that there were 20 of us), drinks were bought out immediately after. I couldn’t believe the speed in which they got all of our meals out. With three of our guests arriving late, they still got all of our meals out at the same time. All 20 of us agreed that the food was impeccable so compliments to the chef. They were helpful in taking group photos and also organising the birthday cake (which had to be lit and relit about three times due to people deciding they wanted to contribute to the speeches- but the staff handled this with grace and patience which was greatly appreciated). I would recommend Mecca Stonehouse to all who were organising a dinner for a large group or simply as a place to go to for dinner. I really don’t believe that you will be let down and myself along with the 20 other people who attended will be sure to return

A big thanks to the staff at Mecca!

I have thought of going to Mecca at Mission Bay many times as the location is great & a walk by the beach after dinner always nice. So last night we went. As lovers of seafood my partner & I chose the seafood platter for 2 & a greek salad as a side. What a huge dissappointment. The platter looked & tasted like the ‘chef’ had puchased the ingredients from the frozen section of the local supermarket. The portion was small, we were still hungry when finished. There were no Oysters (the platter menu stated Oysters were included) & on pointing this out, the waiter did not apologise & returned with a plate of 3 of the most pathetic looking excuse for oysters I have ever seen. The greek salad was average with little feta. NZ has some of the most fantastic seafood in the world, thank god I didn’t have an international guest with me. After dinner I went to the gents – there were broken tiles behind the toilet, a graffitti message on the wall & the handdryer did not work. The Manager explained that it was getting fixed tomorrow. I explained to the Manager that this was simply not good enough & we would not be returning. There are so many wonderful restaurants in Auckland & my experience at other Mecca outlets has been quite satisfactory. This one is an embarrassment and needs to tidy its act up big time.

We went as five adults who are very picky. Our experience was excellent, the food was excellent, service excellent and environment excellent. One area to improve would be remove the ice cream cabinet however this is a small criticism for an excellent meal and evening.

Came here to use the deal dinner voucher. We had the bread and dips, and seafood spaghetti and snapper dishes. All dishes were nice enough, though not particularly special or flavoursome, especially given the high prices ($34 spaghetti, $39 fish). I guess they are charging for the premium location and tourist market, though there’s no view from the dining hall in the old Stonehouse. It’s a lovely room all the same, but the amateur artworks and large screen running a slideshow promoting wedding set ups were not only distracting but lower the tone. Ditto the large plastic bag screwed up next to the screen! The lighting was also distracting. Very dim when we entered, the waiter asked if we wanted it turned up to look at the menus, a pattern that was repeated with each new table of guests resulting in the lighting being constantly dimmed and undimmed. Very odd. In short, despite friendly staff and attentive service, the decor and food simply don’t justify the prices even with a voucher. I wouldn’t rule out trying brunch or lunch in the marquee, but based on this experience, won’t be returning for dinner.

So disappointing! The web site showed the inside of the Stonehouse but when we arrived there was a private function on and we were shown into a shabby marquee, we were not informed about this when booking. The table was wobbly and there cobwebs on the heater and light fittings, unfortunately this was just the start of an unpleasant dinning experience, the menus were filthy and very low quality and the staff grubby and tried to use language to impress (epic fail). We ordered a glass of wine that was well under half when delivered and I had a Corona served warm, I had Venison some of the vegetables where inedible and I complained and the manager said he would ask the chef, he never came back with an answer even when paying the bill (he served us and asked us if everything was ok).

Recently I joined friends and family for a lunch at the Mecca Stonehouse Cafe in Mission Bay. The service was excellent and friendly too. The food was just wonderful. I enjoyed the eggs Benedict and chose the salmon. This was beautifully presented and most enjoyed. My friends also enjoyed their meals. I highly recommend this venue for good service, good food and a nice relaxing atmosphere.

We just had our wedding in the Stonehouse restaurant in the old historic building.
Great location. Great staff.
We had a few things for the set menus that we wanted changing. I suggest if you are having a party and the set menus you test them and do the same (because of course its your wedding and you will have your own ideas) . The food was great, just needed a bit of tweaking for us. I have a restaurant here in Auckland so am a bit particular about presentation and well, having it just how we wanted it. They did everything we asked and the end result was a great meal for all and exactly to our taste. We had a few last minute cancellations so will use the credit to return and eat what we totally enjoyed on our wedding night.
Service was excellent, and the team really made everything run smoothly. They clearly have a culture of ensuring the client is happy and good attention to the detail of their specific needs. Of course I will be living happily married ever after, but if I was to ever arrange another wedding it would be with this team at this venue.
Well done guys.

Seriously beautiful location. I enjoyed a table bathed in sunshine, but completely sheltered from the high-winds coming off the beach during my lunch here today. (There’s a high-ceilinged clear-plastic conservatory that looks a bit uninviting from the outside, but once you’re inside, it’s very nice, comfortable, and I could stare out through the pinetrees to the sea and Rangitoto in the distance. Nice :) )

I had a hankering for some mediterranean style lunch, so found this place online with their “Mini Mezze – A selection of sigara boregi, salt and pepper squid, Salmon skewer, smoked chicken, harissa beef skewer, Marinated olives and hummus, served with grilled Turkish bread” which was perfect for me. ($18.90, it was on the Lunch entree menu.)

Particularly delicious was the delicately cooked salmon on a skewer, and the beef on a skewer too. Melt-in-your-mouth. The hummous seemed freshly prepped from scratch, and was delicious with two small slices of warm turkish bread.

My only recommendation would be to heat the potato-filled cigar filo item for a bit longer. It was warm inside, but not searingly hot as would’ve I liked it to be.

The staff were very attentive. Particularly the young asian gentleman – who was managing the conservatory area where I was seated. And also the lady I spoke to on the phone beforehand was very friendly and helpful.

The prices on the menu are definitely leaning towards the spendy, but I think that’s what you’d have to charge for a set-up like this right on the beachfront.

I like that there’s a completely separate area (also with windshields) for family groups, complete with kids’ playhouse – so I didn’t have to contend with the joyous noises of playful littlies while I was trying to have some relaxing downtime in the ‘grown-ups’ area.

Definitely recommend this place.

Well this was so disappointing. The food was expensive and nice enough but we were there last Saturday night, we had things to celebrate. They rushed us along. When I said I would like to wait to order dessert and coffee they said you can’t we are shutting the kitchen at 9.30 (!) and then they turned off the fire and nearly all the lights and so we were virtually sitting in the dark. How rude is that? When we paid our bill (I was all for just walking out) my friend asked them why the early finish and they said not enough customers. No apology, no discount. Don’t go there plenty of other places along Tamaki that let you have your coffee without turning out the lights at 9.30 and much better value.

Went to Mecca last night and reading some of the other good reviews I must have been at a different place.
I got a deal through one of the buy a deal sites for 4 of us, and the food was a let down, overpriced, and not even average.
We skipped entree’s and just had mains.
The fish and chips, and the Squid rings were like something I would normally get from the local fish and chip shop, but obviously a lot cheaper and better tasting.
I had the Fillet steak, and while it was cooked well, all I got with it was a small piece of Broccoli and mashed potato.
Because of the price of everything, we were reluctant to order deserts, but the wives did, and all it appeared to be was microwaved frozen deserts. Very disappointing. Will not be going back, or recommending it.

My partner and I spend a lot of time in Mission Bay and we recently decided to try out the Mecca Stonehouse as it was the one of the few places we had yet to try- I have to say we were not disappointed at all. Andrew and his staff were friendly, efficient and gave excellent service which added to the the awesome experience we had. We got a table right by the fireplace which was a bonus! I had the baked chicken and my partner had the prawn and scallop fettuccine; both were cooked to perfection and were decent sized portions. The only thing we were bummed about was that we hadn’t come here sooner! Couldn’t fault this place on anything. Thanks again to Andrew and the team for a wonderful dinner.

Suburb setting by the sea…went for breakfast and wow … I can see why it made metro’s best in suburb. the salmon eggs Benedict was amazing. the bread was hearty and toasted perfectly. The salmon a sizable portion and the presentation was perfect. Matched with mocha which perfect for sitting in the early morning sun by the sea, feeling warm in their indoor but outdoor dining space. Staff were friendly and attentive without being overbearing which has become so come with wait staff these days…now that I have finally found this gem right on my door step I will certainly be back soon! We had a lovely dinner last night. The food was exceptional and the service first class. We started with a delicious scallop salad and followed with melt in the mouth veal cutlets and so so tender salt and pepper squid. The chippies and aoli made for a yummy accompliment. The delicious food was washed down with a well priced roaring meg Mt difficulty pinot noir. Andrew and his team did a wonderful job of unexpectedly making a quick meal after work a real treat.

We had a 70th Birthday function at the Mecca Stonehouse. We were a group of 26.
Yanni did us very proud, she is amazing, the set up was wonderful, the food first class and delicious and well presented. We had a choice of starters, mains and of course desserts and we did not have to wait too long for the food to be served.
The waiter alas I cannot recall his name but he was so lovely and so caring and most helpful. My guests were very impressed by the service, the food, the set up. I could not have asked for better. We all had a wonderful time. It is an occasion I shall never forget. I would recommend Mecca Stonehouse to all who are thinking about organizing an event.

We held a function at Mecca Stonehouse and had a wonderful time. The food (sharing platter for starter and a choice of mains) was really good. The staff, especially Yanni and Andrew did everything they could to make sure our evening went well. They were really accommodating and were very patient with last minute change of plans. The room where we held the function was great and every guest had an excellent evening.
This was the fourth time we have held a function at Mecca Stonehouse and will be back again next year. Thank you very much.

After a fantastic experience last time I visited, I was severely disappointed tonight.

A meeze platter with over cooked beef skewers, and overcooked salmon kebabs, smoked chicken obviously from a supermarket, not an ideal start to a meal, but it did have surprisingly good salt and pepper squid…

Mains of a scotch fillet which according to the menu a shiraz glaze… Came out with pan juices with no hint of wine flavour at all… and a singular piece of broccoli, smothered in bearnaise… And lumpy, luke-warm mashed potato…

The staff seemed to not be able to answer questions about the menu (like what the sauce on the steak was meant to be) or recommend a wine with a meal, and were incredibly vague with any answers they did give.

Dessert: plum crumble… Tasty, yet the topping was incredibly dense, and the hazelnuts were incredibly overpowering, not what I expected from a plum crumble.

I’m glad we had a voucher, there is no way I would have been happy paying full price for such a disappointing experience at a restaurant where in the past I had been so impressed.

One of my business client came from Sydney for a day long business meeting. He was staying with Sky city. I went to pick him up in the morning and started our meeting at Mecca Stone House. We had our lunch with Lamb rap and some green salad. We both liked it. But most importantly we like the environment. Wine and dine during lunch time beside the sea was great success for our business discussion.

We liked it so much that we decide to go again for dinner.

For business or personal intimate lunch or dinner, Mecca Stone house at Mission bay is a great place.

My husband and I had dinner at your restaurant tonight.

I would like to thank you and your staff for a fantastic night. We bought a deal voucher the other night and enjoyed your set menu.

The entree was perfect assortment to get your taste buds going.

The main menu ( Scotch Fillet ) was perfectly cooked.

The desert (Plum Crumble Pie ) was most defiantly heavenly.

The service was impeccable and defiantly the best I have experienced.

Thank you so much for a wonderful night.

Decided to visit for a relaxing snack at Mecca after seeing a deal online.

Service was great, with friendly and prompt staff.

The platter however was disappointing. All items seemed to be strewn on the plate, with our sauces and dips being mixed together and the meat skewers juice ending up under our bread and mixing with our salmon.

All in all not a bad place, but not one where I would spend $39 on a very average platter..

Very disappointed. Been there a few times in the past years and it was A LOT better. I would assume Mecca has changed management/owner since last year.

I ordered Fish & Chips ($27.90) on the day. First thing I saw when the plate arrived was BROWN battered fish, which was apparently over-deep-fried. Tempura beer battered fish should’ve been moist and with a soft crispy outer layer. Instead, the fish we got was BITTER, dry and rock crispy. In addition, the whole plate was absolutely bland (except the taste of bitterness due to the burnt batter). I had to season them with salt and pepper. Funny thing was the fries on the other hand was under-cooked. They weren’t raw or cold but they were in very pale yellow colour, even lighter than the frozen chips you get from supermarket.

The owner/manager came to ask how was everything, we just nodded and said ok. It was not because we weren’t dare to confront him but it was more of me thinking “what do you think? Can’t you see the battered fish was brown in colour? Did you even need to ask? Before you served, shouldn’t you put in your initiative and ask the chef to re-do the fish?”

I enjoy food and I do not mind paying big money for good food. Yes close to $30 for Fish & Chips was very expensive but if it was good, I would be more than happy to pay for that. Just like I paid $25.50 for the same dish at another waterfront cafe a week ago. But truth is the fish & chips I had there were worse than the $10 ones from takeaway shop! Mega disappointment when all you wanted was a relaxing day with a good brunch/meal + coffee at a nice cafe. I wouldnt say I won’t go back for sure but most absolutely not until we’re ready to forgive this disappointing experience. Perhaps will give them another chance next year.

We feel that Mecca Stonehouse promises a lot but delivers little. We were seated near the reception area in the ‘add-on’ part and felt quite temporary and rather rushed as a result. Food was very average and service not really up to scratch for a restaurant that seems to pride itself on excellence in its publicity. The stunning views it talks about are really not there for most of the clientele! I guess the bottom line is we won’t be dining there again as we can do much better in Auckland for similar price, better service and better location.

Went there recently for my mother’s birthday dinner – it was a wet and windy night yet there were gaps in the canopy which they had not zipped up so we moved tables as it was cold. I think that rather than customers having to ask for the heaters to be turned on that they should already be on when you enter, it adds to the atmosphere anyway. I found the fake candles a bit much, for such a pricy restaurant surely they can extend to real fairy tealights.
I also was shocked by the number of spelling mistakes in the menu – never a good sign for what is trying to market as a fancy restaurant. My vietnamese salad resembled nothing of vietnam, the eggplant dish was very bland but thankfully my mum enjoyed her snapper.
Filtered tap water would have been great – the water tasted just awful.
Service was great but I wouldn’t be going back – maybe breakfast and lunch is better?

Excellent locatin and setup. Had breakfast with a few friends couple of weeks ago. I have dined here before and thought the place was ok but our recent experience was not very good.

Although the service was good the breakfast was a real let down. I do not mind paying good money for good food but when you skimp on spinach! It is no no. I will still come here for the atmosphere but maybe for something else besides the breakfast menu.

Why cant you leave zero stars?

Why do restaraunts or cafes located in beautiful locations fail so badly on the quality of food and overall provide average service. Do they forget they are a supplier of food not a tourist attraction?
My wife and 3 children had a voucher to Mecca and decided to take the kids for breakfast and then to the fantastic Mission Bay childrens play area. The play was great but the food was terrible. Do not come here for eggs benedict and if you cant afford $15 for a childs bacon and eggs on toast dont even look at this place (bacon is extra and sneekily placed below, eggs on toast is $10).
Mecca here are some tips -
1. Eggs Benedict is Eggs with either bacon or salmon or variation on theme with some hollandaise sauce. It is not hollandaise sauce with some bacon or salmon.
2. Poached eggs went pre-cooked and reheated by dropping back in boiling water, go cold pretty quickly.
3. Leave spinach sitting on toast for more than 30 secs before you serve will turn the toast soggy.
4. Smoked Salmon is usually more tasty served as smoked, not smoked then cooked by swimming in sauce.
5. Point 4 would suggest the dish was served hot, it was not.
6. A good cafe will serve chilled water on a hot day, especially with the number of staff present.
7. Just because you are near a play area do not think that parents would’nt mind a photocopied piece of paper and a box of cheap crayons to keep the children happy. Run they might but draw they will always.
8. If you have a chidrens playhouse, place outside, not in a corner that no child could access or parent could see from anywhere but being sat beside.
9. Because I want to make it to 10, I will remind you of $15 for a childrens bacon and eggs, wow.
10. For the lovely girl who was extremely friendly and welcoming when we arrived, I hope you take the most of the service charges, a bright star in a dull sky.

Mecca, don’t rest on your locatiMoreon and it being easy for a group of cyclists to lean their 15 bikes against the wall to make a living, get your act together. Another online voucher wont get me back.

I ate at the stonehouse for a catered wedding. I had the misfortune out ordering the “cajun chicken” which arrived absolutely stone cold. It wasn’t just me either, everyone at the table got the same disgustingly cold chicken. I would also say that the chicken was entirely devoid of flavour but that might have been because of the cold. Don’t be deceived by the nice location, Mecca Stonehouse is not a place you want to cater a large group.

Mecca Stonehouse has been a favorite of ours for a while but of late the standards have slipped. The place needs a general clean up / tidy up & hot water for washing hands in the toilets would be welcomed. I agree with other reviewers the food just isn’t that fresh & could be significantly improved.

Dinner for 2 – wedding anniversary.
Best part: Food – it was interesting & full of flavour.
Worst: Service by waiter (Amind?). He has been poorly trained (if at all). Tries to hard; tells you what he is going to do before he does it (“I will clear your plates now”) just like he wants praise for doing it – VERY annoying. First time I have ever asked for a change in waiter. Manager did take over SOME of the waiting at outr table but unwanted waiter continued to do some even after our request for a change of waiter. He twice got our orders incorrect – food & wine. Asked for 2 glasses of different Pinot Gris & received one Pinot Gris & a Pinot Noir!
Inside at night is pleasant & warm in winter. Toilets are OUTSIDE in the cold!
Also extremely annoying to hear Windows log-in chimes playing through the music system at full volume at least 4 times as they tried to reboot their electronic ordering system! WHY did they not turn volume down or disconnect the connecting cable before the re-boot?

This is an expensive restaurant ($38 mains) with pretensions to be 5 star but is really only 3.5 – 4 star at best overall. Disappointing is the best I could say.

My girlfriend & I dined there on Sunday evening and found it to be a 3 star at best. The paint was peeling on two walls, the tables were too close together and the decor was a bit out dated. The toilets were an absolute mess also. The food how ever was delicious yet i think were over priced. The service was below average for a restaurant i had heard high praises about. overall we had an average night, though we found more excitement at a lil hut type Spanish bar on the beach front. cocktails and Spanish theme awesome. If only i could remember the name of it id rate it a 5!

I took my family on Mothers Day, as we have had good food there before, terribly disappointing. Cold soggy chips the kids didn’t want to eat, withered salad, I had an eggs Ben, it looked like the eggs had been poached in the morning the dish was not appetizing at all. Like Sam, I’m questioning how this place can be rated as five stars??!

I went there on a gorgeous autumn day last week. We really enjoyed our walk along the beach. Thinking of making the day perfect, we went to Mecca, which ended up with a bad decision. The chips were not fresh and appeared to be recooked. The coffee did not look like from a cafe at all. They did not have a sense of food presentation. They charged high price for the food but delivered a low standard customer service.
It will be my last visit to that place.

I was invited by the owner to try the food at the place. I had calamari rings, bread with dips and garlic bread as an entree. The pesto dipping is exceptionally good. We had a steak and salmon for our mains. Staff is really helpful and kind. Overall, a good dinner.

I booked at the Stonehouse for lunch and was disappointed from the start when we were shown to the cafe/tent. Although we were offered the choice to go to the Stonehouse it appeared a rather reluctant offer. We were also only offered a brunch menu although there was no mention that was all they had on their website.

While it could be a great place to wander up from the beach for a meal it is a very tired and somewhat grubby cafe to bring guests to especially when you were expecting something better.
I had researched most Mission Bay restaurants and this appeared through reviews to be fairly good but I wonder how many of these are friends writing them.

My wife and our mothers ordered the Tempura battered fish and chips and I ordered the crispy salt and pepper squid.

The fish while fresh and tasty was covered in a fairly heavy batter not at all like tempura batter we have had before while the squid while crispy lacked any seasoning and I need to salt and pepper it myself.
The chips were just run of the mill precooked and frozen and the salad very ordinary.

The meals were definitely not value for money and we had far better fish and beer battered chips at The Patriot Bar in Devonport for $10.00 less. The chips there were hand done, chunky and tasty.

Service at Stonehouse was okay, friendly but not exceptional and as mentioned before this place has seen better days.
When reading about the place I was thinking of using this for our next company dinner as the Stonehouse is about the right size but after having a meal there I will definitely give it a miss.

How this place came by a five star rating is beyond me – or perhaps it used to be a lot better??

My husband & I dined there on Sunday evening and found it more 3 star at best. The decor is tired, with damp patches on the plaster and peeling paint on two walls, despite the charm of the building. Two wait staff were looking after half a dozen tables and we were asked by both how our meals were, which is annoying the first time round let alone twice. I found both of them to be lacking in genuine warmth of service, affecting a smarmy approach which we both found irritating. One of them checked a text message after his phone beeped, and then stood with his back to us while he tapped out a response which I found lacking in professionalism. Both of them failed to see a used cocktail/juice glass that sat on a low windowsill across the room from our table the entire length of our visit, and despite taking our orders the waiter didn’t set our table (we requested one that had not been reset by the fireplace) so had to go and find cutlery after he brought our meals to the table. The food was pleasant enough (steak and a lamb shank) and was the best thing about the visit. The female toilets were disgusting – faeces smeared on the floor in one cubical, and generally less than clean. Disappointing as we had heard good things of this restaurant – we won’t be back.

Went for dinner to celebrate our 6 month anniversary.

Service was great! Anish our waiter went the extra mile to make sure we were comfortable, happy and elated with our dining experience.

Not only was the service great but the food was impeccable as well. Good sized portions, hot and very tasty.

Just wanted to add as well, I had Pan Fried Snapper for my main and was enjoying it but had forgotten to request no coriander as I don’t agree with it. Anish checked with me after I had eaten almost half of it and insisted on replacing the whole dish without coriander for me. Talk about going the extra mile when it was not even his mistake!!

Thank you so much Mecca Stonehouse staff and management for a wonderful evening. We will be BACK!

Highly Recommended! AAAAAA++++++

We LOVE Mecca Stone house. We are regulars and love the food, friendly staff and easy access to Mission Bay waterfront and swings for the kids. We Especially love the Egss Benedict and find it to be the best in Auckland – we infact were in Melbourne and our host advised us that a certain place had the best eggs bene, we went but we beleive Mecca Stone house is way better!

I took my family about two weeks ago on weekend morning for brunch. Four different foods and one kid’s menu food was ordered. Very good food. Excellent coffee and view. Reasonably priced. Very busy but attentive service. Undoubtedly one of the best in Auckland. We will try dinner next time.

We went along one Thursday evening 2 weeks after opening to discover a lovely welcoming atmosphere from friendly staff in a funky and comfortable environment.
Not knowing what to drink was solved by a helpful suggestion from the capable bartender for a delicious cocktail which was delicate yet well balanced and refreshing…perfect for our ambivalence about whether to drink alcohol or not.
The staff were very knowledgeable about the menu and helpful without being intrusive and there was never a moment when we didn’t have what we needed. The food was delicious and nicely presented and I cant really say any more other than the worst part of the evening was having to leave at the end of it. We will definitely be back!
