As a gluten-intolerant, this is a great place to eat at when you want a gluten-free meat pie. Their gluten free cakes and slices are also a plus. I like the retro surroundings too.
A problem for me is their slow service, particularly at lunch times when most diners only have an hour for lunch. They also need to be sure that gluten-free food is correctly labelled as such, and that staff are certain which food is gluten-free and which is not.
I would be sad though, if this cafe was not around, even though many other places are on the gluten-free band wagon now.

Having food several intolerances make it challenging to dine out, but Meow’s menu really accommodate people with food intolerances. I really like that the staff don’t get grumpy at me for asking if the food has some specific ingredients that I can’t have, they were understanding and if they didn’t know or not sure, they went inside to ask the chef.
Menu looks good, the place is unique and cozy. The food I got was okay. Would like to go back there to try more from their menu.
I guess the only annoying thing during my visit (for me) was the flies that were flying around and that during the time of my visit it felt a little gritty, some tables were cleared but weren’t cleaned. Though I noticed it got cleaned sometimes later.
HOWEVER, my friend who came with me that day weren’t so lucky, he was disappointed with his food and said that it tasted like they microwaved the food, and the pasta was undercooked and not fresh.

went along to meow for a meal on Friday evening…. the place was pretty busy, most tables full, but because we had reserved a table we were seated promptly…
we were told by the staff that we would be waiting a while for our meals, but we were happy to sit and enjoy a bottle of dog point sav while we waited. i ordered the chicken main, whilst my partner ordered the fish. the chicken was excellent. fresh and zesty and extremely tasty… my partner found the fish dish a little spicy but she’s a light weight, i thought it was great…. pan fried fish with a chick pea stew….
we did wait 45mins for our meals, but the friendly staff came over and talked to us regularly to make sure we were happy, and we were….

We went for dinner at 6.30pm on a unusually quiet Saturday night in Wellington. We got to choose where we sat and there were only two other groups of people.
We got the bread and dips as ontrays. the toast was a bit burnt and the dips were just spooned onto the plate. They were nice but we had to ask what they were.
The mains are oversized, but tasty but way too much food.
Our waitress got my order wrong. I had ordered a vegan burger and a chicken one had arrived. Luckily, it did not take too long for my vegan burger to be cooked.
This place might have potential with all their allergy options food (gluten free, vegan, organic etc), but they need to get on top of their food presentation.

This venue is ok but they really need to get on the ball. We waited far too long for lunch & when it arrived, there were faults in what was delivered. After 35 minutes for lunch however, one is not inclined to debate such things. Most of the food tasted microwaved. Will not return

I love the open relaxed space here inside and outside – that’s a big plus for me as I hate being cramped in cafes – it’s very laid back and is tucked away off the beaten track. The food is very tasty and staff are friendly but both times I visited this cafe (Sunday lunch times) the staff obviously weren’t familiar with the cafe’s menu and the service wasn’t great and was sometimes too relaxed where meals for tables were mixed up and coffee was nice but a bit splashed around the cup and saucer. Maybe the staff are new and just need time to get up to speed.

Pretentious, overpriced, and unprofessional. The worst customer relations I have encountered since I arrived in lovely New Zealand.
Wrong order received, took 45 minutes for wrong order to arrive. Refused refund when I asked to leave. Had to argue with manager for nearly five full minutes to get half the price refunded. “I think its reasonable to wait 45 minutes in a busy restaurant for a meal”, the manager told us. And after all that, the food was cold! Never again!

I had lunch here earlier today …. THE BEST PORK BELLY I’VE EVER HAD … My friend had the Mince on toast & loved it.

WOW. meow is so much fun. the staff are friendly and professional.
i ate the spinach and feta hash, which was so tasty, and a generous serve for the price while my husband had organic salmon. he practically licked the plate.
i liked the homely feel of the place. feels like going home to nana’s for lunch, but the food tastes way better than anything my nana ever made.

Blech – the worst ‘dining’ experience I have had for a long time. Dreadful coffee, tasteless, food, very meagre servings. The service was dreadful – my ‘side’ was cold by the time the main arrived. My companion had also completely finished by the time my meal came. The staff, although friedly, reminded me of The Young Ones … visions of Neil’s snot stew came to mind. If this is what ‘organic dining’ is all about, give me a big-fat-hormone-pumped-intensively-farmed-meat-fest any day…

Great range of gluten free options, I had a really yummy chicken, bacon and mushroom pasta there, and have also tried the vege lasagne. Delicious!
This place is a bit random. I went with a group from work and we ordered counter food that was very nice and flavourful, but I couldn’t call it particularly special. The coffee was good and the retro crockery is a nice touch.
Most will find the decor a little rough around the edges, but it does have a certain charm and I’m sure smokers appreciate the large outdoor area at the back.

we went here for brunch and it was awesome. great service, friendly staff. I had the pancakes (they were divine) and my friends each had the vege stack (which they said was delicious). highly recommended!

Great place, classic 70s decor, original 70s crockery (I think the guy who runs it has collected it himself over the years) and friendly staff.
The chocolate brownie is amazing. Haven’t had a meal there yet, but the coffee’s been great every time, and is fair trade organic People’s coffee – fresh and roasted in Wellington.
Definitely recommend it = )

Did you eat at this restaurant? Have an opinion to share?

Viewers: note the downhill slide in service dated from 2009- 2011 – change of ownership perhaps?
There are plenty of cafes in NZ that can serve twice the amount of customers in the same time. Perhaps the manager needs to hire a barista to support current staff (note large floor area, rainy afternoon and lots of coffee orders..not too many customers however) and also have some good systems in place to encourage returning customers. Remember a “regular customer” is a customer who has returned to an establishment just 3 times. The selling point of cafe-style Gluten free food should not warrant a great rating, customer service is also paramount. Meow- I will not be returning.
