Milk and honey is located by the sea in Ahuriri Napier. Opened November 2008 by Sean Burns & Nic Scotland.
Sean and Nic wanted to open an urban eatery that is accessible through the day & night. When a new site became available in the Crown Hotel building, they grabbed it and set about designing their new space. Giving it a somewhat industrial feel with wood & concrete, they balanced it with soft lighting and two prominent pieces of art – featuring a painting by Nic (a fulltime professional artist) and local photographer Richard Brimer. Sean’s hospitality background is in Wellington restaurants and local wineries and lodges included Craggy Range and Cape Kidnappers. Sean was on the lookout for the perfect chef when his good friend Paolo emailed to say he was returning to NZ from Italy . . . and so Milk & Honey was born. Serving Italian inspired food, Milk and Honey offers breakfast, lunch, dinner and everything in between, from 7am, 7 days a week.

Found out about milk and honey while searching on the net as my husband and I were heading to napier for easter weekend, after taking a drive round we decided to check out the milk and honey menu for some lunch. We walked into a semi busy cafe but there were empty tables, for the first 5 mintues we were compleatly ignored, finally i asked the waitress if we could just have a look at the menu and were told that we would not be able to have lunch till 12pm (it was 11:30) there was no mention of a brunch menu but we figured that was what everyone else was eating as they had food on their plates. We decided to go for a walk and come back at 12, we go back at about 11:50 and walked in, the place was quiter but once again we were compleatly ignored, a waitress was about a meter from us and made no atempt to acknowledge us or even say hello, after standing there for about 10 minutes not sure if we just sat ourselves or needed to see a waitress or waiter first we walked out. So disappointing as it seemed like a nice menu but comming from a hospo background i knew by the staffs attitude we were not going to get the best of service and couldnt be bothered with the wait. We also understood it was a long weekend but the place had spare tables and the staff wern;t run off their feet so the fact on both occassions we went in on that day and were ignored makes me think the service isn’t worth it so will not be going back and will be telling friends and family in napier if they want friendly service the’re better off going to breakers or lonestar, atleast they say hello there.

My capaccio was the best i’ve had, in at least 4 years! i love the dish and have had PLENTY!, loads of places try to fancy it up, but i’m quite content with the traditional rock salt, lemon, rocket, parmesan, olive oil meaty goodness that i usually expect, but…milk and honey delivered the outstandingly delicious variation i didn’t expect! it was perfection. When i eat capaccio, i don’t want to use my knife…at all! the meat should tear away easily with the accompaniments to scoop, until the last fork full of goodness that i can gather!
Then the confit of duck! beaut..til..icious cooked to perfection, accompanied by… your choice! mine, eggplant (aubergine) parmigiana, a dish very well respected, as well as, the waitresses’, at last!!!! (they were (very much) a deterrent/stuck (right up!) before!!! Well done for ‘kicking THEM to the curb!’ Great food is waaaay too often tainted by ‘Shite’ service! Not anymore at milk and honey, go there, and guaranteed something delicious, and a great experience…absorb this review, as i am just literally a random who loved it! cheers, kristof

Last night 6 of us went to Milk and Honey. The atmosphere was divine. The service was incredible. and the food – OMG … all 6 of us were extremely wrapped with our amazing our food was …it was beautifully presented and so tasty. I had the steak, a few of the girls had the lamb and one had the fish. None of us could fault it. Thanks Milk and Honey for incredible food and service!

We were in Napier for a long weekend last weekend and stumbled on this great little cafe. We came back every morning for breakfast and cannot fault it. I for one don’t mind paying a bit more for quality but found their prices no more than I would pay in Auckland. Great food – beautifully presented, and great coffee. Service from all the staff was professional, sharp and hugely friendly. No wonder the cafe was full each morning! First rate.

Went to Milk & Honey for the third time today, so we did give them a fair chance. The location is nice with great view at the Bay when sitting outside. But the temperature of the espresso machine is too high. You can taste that the ground coffee is burned. Another sign of the coffee being too hot is that there is no layer crema on top of the espresso.
Prices are of the chart. When ordering a fruit platter you don’t expect it to be three cherries, two slices of pineapple, half a banana and two kiwi wedges costing $10.30! And don’t get me started on the tiny bowl (or rather cup) of yoghurt and muesli which cost $ 12.40!
Although the staff is very friendly, we won’t go to M&H again.

I have only ever been for coffee and a breakfast. I love the service and the staff are super friendly.
I enjoy their coffee which considering the bean doesn’t normally excite me is saying something.

I will say the only thing that let them down is they mucked up my breakfast order, but overall they are brilliant :-)

we love this place! – have had dinner at M & H a number of times; – with friends, – with our young children, – and romantic table for 2, – service is always 10 out of 10 – they read the situation and deliver impeccably – the wine list is so varied and interesting – the food always really impresses us – the lamb shoulder is always a hit – keep it up!

Beautiful setting – had Signature Dish lamb pasta which was OK. It was a braised lamb dish set on Asian noodles which had not cooked properly…not bad enough to send back but not that great either. Service was great and other diners seemed to enjoy their meals thoroughly.

I have eaten here a few times and the service has always been very welcoming, the food delicious, and the affagato with vanilla icecream and liqueur the best dessert in town. I like the idea of the different tables for casual or more formal dining, and the art work is also inspiring. I ate out recently with a friend who works in a top NZ restaurant and she thought it was excellent. I like the industrial decor but as the room is all hard surfaces it does amplify background noise which can make it difficult for the hard of hearing to have an easy conversation if the place is busy. It doesn’t affect the food or the friendliness though. And at the end of a hot Napier day there’s a cool table by the window to catch a breeze and watch the evening gather over the bay.

I have yet to dine at Milk & Honey. However, if you are looking for a brilliant spot for your morning or afternoon coffee, lots of wine selections by the glass and relaxed music and attentive staff; Milk & Honey has these areas well covered. Owned and Operated by the famous and very hospitable Sean Burns, one of the best in the business. I look forward to the dining experience.
