Everyone who has given such high praise to Mitchell’s must have a death wish. The food is not what I would call cheap (for what it is) and is extremely fatty, greasy, bland and cholesterol laden. Like many modern restaurants, instead of focusing on using seasonings and herbs for flavouring, they have included high-fat dishes as a way of making the food palatable. Very surly, unfriendly and unhelpful staff. I have had many nice pub meals, this is pub dining at its worst. I think I put on 2 stone just being there. My grandfather described it as “army food” – which is pretty much spot on.

They say 13 is an unlucky number just let me say not on this occasion. The food the locals and the staff are set back in a time warp. We love the atmosphere the staff are awesome and nothing is a hassle. Few years back we even held our wedding reception there not sure if they do it now but they did us a buffet meal well done guys I bow to your knowledge.
Mitchell’s is a Tavern, you have to know what a Tavern (or Pub) is before you go there and not expect to find any different. The high ratings are probably because Mitchell’s doesn’t pretend to be anything but what it is. It’s not a pub pretending to be a fancy restaurant and it’s not a fancy restaurant disguised as a pub. For that reason, it’s a great place.
It’s busy and pretty easy to see why. There is a decent selection of food and even a few things you wouldn’t expect to find in a pub (fettucine?). The meals are a good size, and the prices incredibly good. If you are hungry and just want a good meal without spending a fortune then this is worth a visit.
This place isn’t for anyone with high cholesterol, watching their weight, counting WW points or after a green salad. While I have no doubt that they could probably help with something off their menu, to really enjoy the place try the pork chops and grab a beer.

we went there for dinner and dessert last night for the opening world cup match and even though they were quite busy and the food was quite quick and yummy, good sized portions, the service really friendly and helpful.
just an honest, welcoming place! we will definitely come back!!!

Mitchell’s Tavern – above and beyond!
Caught in the recent snowstorms and unable to progress, we made for the nearby Mitchell’s Tavern in Caversham. Bought ourselves some yummy hot chocolates to tide us over and chatted with the very friendly, wholly welcoming waitress about the roads and our slim prospects of making it home to Brighton. Five minutes later, to our total surprise, said waitress turned up with a complimentary bowl of chips plus some puzzles and colouring pencils for our 6-year-old daughter.
How wicked is that?
Proper old school – lovely, friendly family tavern with yummy food – highly recommended!

Mitchells is such a nice place. It is as you would except a pub restaurant to look. The staff are really friendly, the meals really nice and good value for money, and served promptly.
Added bonus of getting a “Welcome to Mitchells …” bit of paper when we booked.
Drinks are really cheap too.

Great Family dining, meals are good value and served promptly. Staff are welcoming and friendly. Decor is basic, its a full you up and ship you out kind of place!.
Steaks are great as is their pasta. Portions are HUGE – be warned!

We visited this Mitchells Tavern for a joint birthday celebration, after reading the reviews on this website.
The meals were wonderful, well priced, ample quantity and well cooked. We arrived for a 2pm lunch, everything went well, pleasant young Maori hostess.
But the staff, well most need to go on a Kiwihost course. No greeting, how can we help. Problem stemmed from not taking a booking Surname, mobile number only, causing booking identification hassles when we arrived. Most reception staff need a tuneup.

One of those pubs you just want to keep going back to time and time again. The food is always good and great portions. Well priced.Great selection of food choices for entrees, mains and desserts. Also a blackboard menu and a new menu of lighter and smaller portioned meals. Just need to add more padding to the chairs. Love this pub

A great pub for a cheap casual meal. My partner wasn’t all to impressed with his blue cod (the pieces were a bit small) but my fettucine was amazing and MASSIVE. I got through a quarter of it and took the rest home for lunch and dinner the next day. Well worth the $15!
The waitress we had was very friendly and found the time to ask us if we needed anything else even though the place was packed.

a friendly atmosphere most of the time. Some staff blunt and one in particular, “Karen” very rude and self opinionated. Food was excellent for pub grub. Well presented, good service, clean and tidy with an ‘nothings a bother’ attitude toward customers.Over all a very satisfying experience.

This is a great, cheap quick bistro/pub feed. Friendly staff, nothing is a problem and you get what you pay for.
