When out for lunch, I ordered the seafood chowder, it was nice and thick but didn’t have any mussels like it said on menu. My hubby had the “prime rib-eye steak” burger which was more like a thin schnitzel. Very disappointing and was well over overpriced….we get better at our local fish and chips shop! We wont go back for this reason.

We visited this Cafe, November 2011 for a brunch/lunch. Whilst the food was very good we found the staff/Director to be very arrogant and rude.
Nearing the end of my meal I found an inch long black hair(definately not mine) on my plate. I called the waitress over and showed her. She basically snatched my plate away and said she would inform them out the back. I waited a good 1/2hr for somebody to come and apologise. Eventually we got up to leave so I approached the counter and asked the Director of the cafe if he had been notified of the hair on my plate. He very rudely replied “yes he had been told, but couldn’t I see that he was extremely busy”(obviously not to busy to serve me at the counter when he thought I had come to spend more money). My friend suggested to him I should be reimbursed for my meal (which I did not agree with) and he said “yeah right”-” after she has eaten it all”. I explained all I wanted was an apology and that the waitress had been very rude also. I was then told “well she is just the cleaner helping us out – cant you see we are run off our feet”. I was somewhat astounded by his attitude and he never did apologise.
What happened to the customer is always right??
As this restaurant with its wonderful views is visited by many overseas visitors it appalls me to think this is the way New Zealanders working at this restaurant would treat them.
I think that the Director and his staff need to take a course in customer etiquette and learn to treat their customers in a respectful manner.
After all had I received a genuine apology(which is such a simple thing to do) I wouldn’t be writing this negative review and I wouldnt of left the restaurant one very “unhappy customer”.

Had a very nice meal here in the weekend. Although it was extremely busy with rugby world cup fans the experience was still enjoyable. Very high standard of food I had the blue cod pie which is apparently new to the menu this came with fries and salad and I thought it was very reasonable. Friendly staff. I finished with a very good latte, overlooking the Boulders. The gift shop is worth a look too. Will be sure to return again.

Love this place, such a great setting and a good selection of food on the menu. Have tried lots of dishes as they do cabinet food as well as main meals, have never been disappointed. My last visit I had the Chicken Wrap which is delish a nice combination of chicken, streaky bacon, brie cheese, spinach and aoli. They do a nice gluten free version of the chicken wrap but in a gluten free garlic pita. Although its the blue cod which is pretty hard to beat, great story on Country Calander recently about Moeraki Blue Cod being cooked at the Moeraki Boulders Cafe. Well worth a stop if you’re in the area.

We often stop here on our way to north. We always have the Fresh Moeraki Blue Cod and the Seafood Chowder, both awesome!. Nice atmosphere on a sunny day to sit out on the deck and look down towards to the Boulders, or on winters days in front of the open fire. Friendly service.

I’ve give 0 stars if I could for this cafe/Bar. We went for lunch and made the error of firstly being non-Kiwis and secondly going on a public holiday. When we challenged the bill (over $80 for lunch and one of the four of us only had a bowl of chips) we were told very rudely that there was a surcharge on public holidays. A very small sign which was located by the till was thrust in my husband’s face as if he should have seen this and/or just known this. There was no indication of how much the surcharge was, nor was this info put by the board with all the food choices on. The cafe was very scruffy, crumbs all over the floor, toilet paper on dirty floors in the loos and tables we had clear before we sat down.
Of course, I can’t fault the views of the sea. But perhaps NZ needs to take on board that it can’t live on nice views for ever. Value for money and high standards should be just as important.
