A great experience to dine in a cafe with exceptional Mountain views. A good feel of cleanliness, friendly willing staff, great open fire and excellent meals. Oh to be trapped there for longer!

Just charming. Good food and organic at that! Beer on tap, good selection of wine, great view, accomodating staff. So much nicer than the vibe at the v.touristy hermitage

What a fantastic place!
The ambiance in this restaurant is warm and cozy, on a rainy day there was a great open fire blazing and the smell of Lillie’s and coffee was delicious. The food quality was brilliant- fantastic gravy on organic produce. To have an entirely organic meal below NZ’s highest peak, pure magic The staff were welcoming and treated us like returning friends. It was a beautiful place and highly recommended.

We have travelled extensively through the South Island on many occasions. The Old Mountaineer is probably the worst place we have had the misfortune to eat at. The service was unfriendly and surly. We ordered a couple of pizzas which cost something like $27 each. When they arrived they were well undercooked and only luke warm. We really should have sent them back but like most people we voted with our feet and will never go back. Charlie Hobbs , instead of swanning around the restaurant socialising with non customers you really do need to sort out your staff and the quality of the food. Also look at your prices, they are exorbitant, even for Mount Cook.
We were astounded at the prices in this restaurant. As we were there on Good Friday there was a 15% surcharge on top of these prices.
For dinner, sausages, mash and vegetables were $29:00 and lamb chops mint sauce and mash $37:00.
We had dined the previous night at the Panorama Room in the Hermitage. This is a la carte fine dining and the most expensive main course was $39:00.
Putting it bluntly there was no comparison.
At the Old Mountaineer the ambiance is just a cafe and the service is very average.
We will not be going back.
