Surprised previous reviewer gave this two stars. There is so much variety here, from the more formal area to the relaxed area to eat in. Chefs change regularly here but my last meal, about August 2011 the food was divine.
So the Golden Gate is another one of those Bar/Restaurant venues but trading under the name Pisa Café. In terms of eating places, there isn’t a huge selection going on in Cromwell. Golden Gate happens to be one of the larger accommodation venues with one of the more popular bars.
The café is nicely laid out, not at all like an atypical bar/restaurant. Situated right near the entrance to Cromwell Town, it would probably have some stunning views of snow covered mountains during winter. An outdoor dining area possibly ensuring that people have somewhere to sit when the 30 degree plus temperatures make their way to Central Otago – which shouldn’t be too far away.
I ordered a chicken, cranberry and brie pizza. The pizza toppings change daily apparently, so this was the “pizza of the day” – ordered with a side of fries.
Unfortunately for me the pizza, whilst it wasn’t awful, wasn’t great. Very little in the way of cranberry sauce and it was more like a mild cheese pizza with very little in the way of any of the key ingredients you would expect to find in a Chicken, cranberry and brie pizza. It was still very edible though. The fries were really good, better than many other places. For $4.50 they were a great price considering the volume.
Service was great, setting was great – would happily eat there again, but may try something different next time.
