Went to Poppy Thai whilst on holiday in Nelson, with family and our two children. Arrived before opening time, but was let in which we found to be good seeing we had children with us. Found menu to be full of choices, and the meals we had were lovely. Our table had ordered from an array of different dishes, noodles to curries and seafood, all plates were emptied, and all meals were good value for money. Only a few downfalls, was the waitress didn’t come back to check to see if our meals were ok and if we needed anything else (we had run out of water which was needed seeing we had some hot dishes), felt the entree were a little over priced seeing they were of a small portion. Over all a good experience.

Went for Valentines day and received free desert of chocalate cake and icecream which was very nice. However it was not not all wonderful. They had no veg spring rolls as listed on the menu. The wines were unremarkable (we tried 3 whites and only liked one).
The fish cake starter was, in my opinion too floury and not very fishy and the cakes a little too large. However my partner enjoyed them. Her main meal disappointed her as it was not gingery enough and was lacking in crisp veges. She had a chicken noodle dish. My seafood yellow curry was very tasty but I prefer the fish curry that they have removed from the menu. Staff were helpful and friendly but the girls had very poor english. Also when I asked for more sweet chilly sauce for the fish cakes he removed the tiny bowl and returned with it topped up. He should have left the bowl and bought another as we were left without for a while. Overall good but not fantastic. Back to The Golden Bell for next time.

Best satay chicken ever. And the prices are very reasonable. I would suggest anyone visiting Nelson try Poppy Thai.

The one time we have been to poppy thai there was only one other couple dining, in such a big place this was slightly off putting and i was worried that this was a reflection of the food… however when faced with the menu i decided this couldn’t be the case… there were so many options! and everything sounded delicious!!! i ordered the satay chicken which was incredible, with the perfect balance of flavours and a very reasonable portion size. the food was served quickly and the service was polite. i felt the staff could have been more friendly and engaging but who knows maybe on a quiet night they are preoccupied with work out the back. friends of ours have had good experiences at poppy thai as well, so would definitely recommend.

Everything is yummy..I’ve tried almost all on the menu! Can’t wait to go back and enjoy more of Thailand again ; )
