I love Port Royale! It has such a refreshing environment, usually has great art for sale, mellow music, interesting mags AS WELL AS really good food and coffee at a good price. I am a Port Chalmers local and wouldn’t consider going anywhere else for my coffee fix! I think some people misinterpret the service, it is just not the in your face smarmy service, it is just relaxed, and usually the staff are serving a lot of people at once. I think some of the reviewers need to chill out a little. This is the locals cafe, and for my money it is the best in Dunedin.
Had a delicious brunch here. There really aren’t many breakfast restaurants/cafes in Dunedin ‘getting it right’. Port Royal Cafe have amazing food that doesn’t leave you feeling dissatisfied or slightly ripped off. My boyfriend ordered the big breakfast fry up, and it came with roasties, loads of button mushrooms, prefectly cooked eggs, fresh thick toast A+++! I had the bacon and egg bagel which was packed full of flavour, devine! Perfect coffee! Highly reccommend, and nice to go for a bit of a drive out to Port Chalmers too
I see other reviewers have made negative comments re. their service. We didn’t experience this at all, the staff were friendly, not too overbearing and we felt comfortable enough to relax and enjoy eachother’s company without worrying too much about the service. May have been lucky enough to go on a day where the staff were happy, who knows!

Yep, the service sucks. I am normally a stickler for good service but the food and coffee is so god damned good we keep going back.
If you can get past the not-so-friendly waitresses, the food, especially the BLT bagel, is devine. The lady on the coffee machine has the best froth I’ve ever had (no I’m not from Dunedin originally) and the atmosphere is really nice, even the music.
We go there almost weekly, have our coffee, BLT’s and read design mags. We inevitably strike up a conversation with someone sharing our table because it’s busy, but that’s awesome and what this kind of place is all about.
I’d definitely recommend everyone to head out there for weekend brunch and a BLT the first chance they get. Whether you’re a Port local or not it’s a brilliant way to spend the morning.

walked in, greeted with not even a smile from the grumpy personality free manager. Food average, when asked for a menu, she grumped and pointed at a dirty small menu on the wall. Music crap and so loud we could not hear each other across the table.
