We dined on 19 Jan 2012. We were a bit apprehensive after reading some reviews but thoroughly enjoyed the meal. Service was really good. Had entrees within 10 mins of arrival and mains within 25-30 mins. Food was excellent especially their new beef meal. Decor was excellent and didnt have any of the problems of echo as other reviews have stated. Patrons at table alongside were equally pleased as we discovered talking to them. Highly recommend to anybody wanting to enjoy Thai/Western fusion food.

I ordered a Kung po chicken, It was too salty for my tastes and I am a salt addict so that tells you something. The vegetable weren’t that nice either. I expected much more from this place.
I have tasted better and cheaper kung po chicken at The Basin Noodle house (however the atmosphere at Basin Noodle House is not in any way posh).
My boyfriend got his favorite Orange beef. I gave it a whirl and it tasted a lot better than my meal.

He ordered some duck rolls for his entree. He said they were delicious. Good value for those. I would not taste because I won’t eat duck..

I ordered crab spring rolls, to me they were very boring tasting, nothing to write home about and way over priced for what they were. Basically tasted like surami with spring roll paper around them and deep fried.

So over all pretty average really. I expected more from this place because my boyfriend raved on and on about how great it was. I’m guessing the orange beef is perhaps the best thing on the menu as that’s all he ever ordered there in the past.

BUT what really ripped my undies was when the nice waitress asked us if we would like some water. Of course we said yes, assuming water is free right??? well she gave us the option of sparkling water or just regular water. I said regular, BF said sparkling.

I also ordered a mango juice…

When we got up to pay I was shocked to see the sparkling water was an extra $7.50 on top of the meal. I had budgeted for $100 for the night. and in total it came to $108

I would have much rather paid $7.50 on something other than fizzed up water!! I felt kinda tricked into buying it. Which left me feeling ripped off in some way. It’s the principal of it. Not going back there now. humf!

We visited Red Ginger with a voucher that was outdated by 1 day, and after a few discussions, and checking with managers it was accepted, so very happy with that, but sadly the food did not live up to expectations.

We tried to order the duck, after hearing good reviews of this but this was not available, the wine choices where not available either.
We did really enjoy the shrimp starters rolled in filo, they were good. The Orange beef tasted like eating an orange with beef .. (rather than the other way around).

The room itself is a bit sterile, a lo t of echo from the tables and concrete walls.

Overall a bit disappointed, sadly.

The food was amazing, very different from the usual fare, but still ‘European’ enough to most people’s taste. It was also presented very well.

Service was pretty good, we were seated promptly, and a few minutes later were visited by the waitress. Meals came out quickly. We weren’t asked how our meals were going, but I couldn’t fault mine, so that wasn’t a problem.

We went on quite a busy night, and the building (concrete) echoed the noise so it was very loud, and we felt we had to yell to talk to each other. The music was also quite loud and bassy, which didn’t help matters. The decor was very chic and clean, which I liked.

Will definitely go back, but on a quieter night perhaps.

Terrible.

We’re seated and promptly forgotten. Took nearly 30-minutes to get our drinks. Over an hour for the food.

When the food finally came it was cold.

The service staff didn’t care. They were too busy looking bored, talking to each other behind the bar.

They nearly ruined the night. Good thing I’d brought such fantastic company with me.

Would not go here again.

Worst Dining Experience Ever!

A friend was in town and I had raved to her how wonderful Red Ginger was and she was keen to go. We booked a table at 8, we arrived and we were seated.

We then didn’t see the waitress for another 15-20mins till I flagged her down. At that point we ordered drinks, entrees and mains.

20mins later I flagged her down to ask where our drinks were we’d nearly finished the water at the table. She said she’d ask the kitchen – I suggested that she go to the bar.

Entrees arrived 10mins after that and one of the ordered entrees were incorrect.

Plates were cleared. Our glasses were empty and we then had to gain the attention of the waitress again to order drinks and the table next to us were in the same situation also.

A couple two tables down sat down and received mains within 10mins of arriving. We were still sitting there 1hr and 50mins and still no mains.

At that point we expressed our disappointment of the service and were not going to wait a minute longer we would and paid our bill and left.

We then went to Chow down the road we were served immediately – within an hour we had drinks, long plate meals, dessert and coffee.

Really Disappointed!!

Very nice meal. Nice surroundings. Friendly staff.

Had the Roast Pork Bun for starters. It was excellent, the pork was very tasty, and the sauce was awesome.

Mains were the steamed diced chicken and the belly of pork with ginger/green tea noodles. Both were good. I enjoyed the Pork more. The noodles that accompanied it were delicious and the pork was delicious. The chicken I wasn’t so much a fan of. Reminded me of Dim Sums. Nice but not my favourite. Had food envy of the next table who ordered the orange beef.

We used an entertainment card, which kept it at a reasonable price of 65 with a glass of wine and a cocktail.

Great hospitality, beautiful food!

I ordered a Red Ginger cocktail which makes a really refreshing summer drink. Would love to have it in a tall glass though.

The roasted duck curry noodles which I ordered was yummy indeed! So much duck meat which was great for the price! The meat was tender and succulent! The buns which accompany this dish are usually steamed and then deep-fried but the restaurant obliged happily when I asked for them to be steamed only.

Would definitely return! The only reason why I couldn’t give it 5 stars was because I thought the place was a little cold, temperature could be warmer to make it more comfy in the colder months.

RED GINGER is in my opinion, currently the best new Asian-Euro fusion type restaurant in Wellington.

The food is “great”.

Presentation is “perfect”.

Ambience is “tastful, modern and comfortable”.

And service is “excellent”.

ENJOY !!!
