Discover. Collect. Return. This is the mantra that has inspired the creation of Auckland hospitality legend Luke Dallow’s newest bar venue, The Red Hummingbird.

The focus of Red Hummingbird is as a beautiful drinking establishment with live entertainment seven days a week, and a simple menu.

Making its nest in the heart of the city, The Red Hummingbird promises an escape into the unknown.

Luke explains the bar as being inspired by what he’s seen, bought or been given over the years, and provides a journey through the recesses of his mind.

“If I die tomorrow and my life flashes before my eyes, I’ll probably pretty much see The Red Hummingbird,” he says.

For now the journey takes in a giant bird cage on the back deck, framed vintage Penthouse magazines, a 7 foot high Tiki, wall-mounted taxidermy, graffiti art, all manner of lights and even the odd corporate logo. This backdrop of curios helps create a relaxed, inclusive atmosphere in which to enjoy a few drinks or sample small yet interesting bar menu.

But while the welcome you’ll enjoy will never change, don’t be surprised if things look a little different the next time you go back. And you will. The magic of the Red Hummingbird is that it’s always moving …. even when you think it’s staying still.

Snack menu was a rip off. $15 for chips and dip!! Not a bad place but not great. No real reason to go back after trying it once.

Hi CASA, Thank you so much for your feedback and deep apologies about the price. The chips and dip have been brought back down to $7 and we are currently working on the menu and kitchen to improve the offerings. We hope you’ll swing back again later this year…    More »

the website states it is open on weekends from 12 noon. Got there at 1pm, was told it was closed till 2pm. Got there at 2.15 and was then told (rudely) we could drink but the kitchen only opened at 3pm. We just gave up at that point and won’t be back. Noticed that all the other restaurants in Federal streets were packed with people! So plenty of other choices

What made our night is that we had a very good waiter and she really looked after us. We order the complete menu of small plates and they were all pretty standard fare. The smoked fish was the pick of them. There is a good open bar out the back.

Worth a stop if you are walking pass.

We called in last week and enjoyed. Whilst being new and exciting, we found the food a little average but the service was great and the knowledge of the barman fantastic.

will be back next time we are in town

Ok bar overall, nothing special really…i was expecting something much more from the famed Luke Dallow. However this place seems much the same as his other establishments i.e Chapel…Still great to see federal street being spruced up however!

The deco is cool, but food is dissapointing, cheap though, but not good. This is a typical skycity place with a over 40s crowd. Good service but not much reason to come back.

AMAZING AMAZING AMAZING.

There is only one way to describe this bar… magical. I attended the launch party and there were cheeky gnomes, ‘creatures’, stilt walkers, a homeless guy (an actor i hope!) it was out of this world! Granted this probably wont be your standard Saturday night but if it is a sign of things to come then you better get excited. I tried the ‘shake your tail feather’ cocktail and it was refreshing, not overly sweet (many places can kill a good cocktail) and pure deliciousness. The staff were fantastic and the ambiance of the place is incredible. Definitely cant wait to go back, I hear they plan to have pies you can buy and takeaway?!
