I’m a regular at eating at restaurants, (or pub meals as this place has. I visit Matamata on a regular basis, so have tried all the options, and have been to the Redoubt a few times in the past. This will be the last time. Cant say Ive ever been impressed with the meals, way over priced for what you get. Don’t know if it is a bar or restaurant. Don’t seem to get table service (they do have a note on table telling you to go to bar if they are busy), however they were not busy and we got no attention from staff. For the prices charged i would expect full service with restaurant quality meals, not no service and pub quality meals. Nice range of beers and wines, but once again seemed to be way over priced. Could expect those prices if they were on waterfront in the viaduct in Auckland!! Meals were slow to arrive once we ordered at the bar, with one being wrong, and mine burnt. Not the first time being burnt either. Personally wont be going back, and would not recommend unless you have no kids and don’t mind paying for over priced food and drinks.

Was passing thru Matamata on Sunday and wondered why everything looked shut! One place looked open so called in and discovered there was a power cut to area so this place had hooked up a generator for the day – nice one!
Was greeted by smiling (if very very busy) staff and quickly had our order taken. Had fantastic garlic bread followed by the best steak sandwich I have had in a long time. Enjoyed a couple of beers and listened to the live music for a while before hitting the road again. Will definitely call in again if back this way.

The other day I decided to choose Redoubt as a place to eat and treat myself. On the menu there was a pasta ‘special’ and of course being a fan of pasta I ordered this dish. Throughout my ‘close to’ or ‘hour’ wait for my meal, a staff member changed the specials board (was sitting right next to it) and after asking where my meal was, i was then served the NEW pasta they had just put on the menu. Staff then proceeded to make out like I was lying and the new pasta dish had been there the whole day. I spoke to the girl who served me and she admitted to me she remembered me ording this certain pasta. I told them not to worry about cooking anything else as I had waited long enough and decided to pay for my drinks and leave. The service was shocking as there was no apology for my wait OR for the muck up with my order. Am very dissapointed as I am a local and will now not be going back there again.

yum yum yum!!! They have the most amazing chicken tenders wrapped in bacon and the stone bread is worth so much more than what it is priced! (shhh though) Am not too impressed with the change to the curly fries though!

Was passing through town and it looked really nice so we went in 2 weeks ago and I ordered a pasta dish…”Aglio Oilo” or something like that…..will be the very last time I ever eat at this place. I dont like chilli so asked if mine could have none…well someone could have told me i would be getting dried up old spaghetti with no sauce,oil or anything. How imaginative are the chefs to come up with a dish like that. Very disappointing and would not recommend this place.

Had a great relaxed meal with friends there a week ago. Great presentation and fresh food. Friendly service. Would recommend for a chilled afternoon beer and late lunch.

This was not my first visit to Redoubt, probably my 10th as it is a great place to drop into when travelling along the main highway. My friend and I were having a catch up and chose Matamata and the Redoubt…..great choice. Once again the food was fresh, interesting and delivered to our table in good time. The wait staff were really helpful and we both felt like VI P’s. The fire was going, the customers friendly and it felt so laid back and relaxed we put off going back to the sterile motel and had another drink or two. I have owned two eateries and if you can find something to moan about at this place then you must be uptight.

On a random stop through Matamata I stopped at this place and at first glance I thought it was a pub…but boy was I wrong!… I found the service friendly and laid back…relaxing! I had the best Seafood Chowder ever for my starter and a bar member suggested the “bedrock” Scotch…it was the most perfectly cooked piece of meat!…perfect! And all this on a Tuesday night. I enjoyed the total experience and definitely will be stopping in again on my travels:)

The Redoubt has been nominated for best customer service in the Matamata Piako District every year since it opened in 2006. They have an order at the bar policy because they are a BAR! When it is not busy they will serve you at your table otherwise get up and order at the bar – there are reminder notes on the table about this.I hope you gave the kitchen staff a chance to rectify any meals you weren’t happy with rather than just critising once you left.

Been there twice. Service very slow and I could hardly understand what the waiter was saying,he was mumbling. The meals weren’t great. I do have to say though the creme brulee was nice. Thats what the 1 star is for!! The vegie pizza has nearly no vegies on it and is smothered in far too much cheese!! Less cheese and more vegies. It was like a cheeze pizza with optional vegies!!!!! yuck!! oh and for some reason one of the people in the group ended up with their desert as their mains-while we were eating mains. Then she was brought her mains!!!! WTF????

Food is always average, and very overpriced. Service is slow, and you have to order at bar. With the price they charge, they should be looking after you at the table. Generally a long wait to receive meals, even if your the only one there. poor range of beers also. Overall Poor

We have had so amny fun filled hours at this bar with the great food served by Spike, and the cocktails… yum
