River Restaurant and Vineyard offers superb food and wines in a scenic vineyard setting.
Expansive decking and a warm welcome make it an ideal place for lunch, dinner or that special occasion or function.
Let us help you make your next event that extra bit special by hosting it at River Restaurant.
Sample our great platters and River Wine, there is no better place to try these fantastic wines than where the grapes were grown on the stony flats of the old Tongariro riverbed.
And depending on the time of year you can watch the vines soak up the beauty of the area as they prepare themselves for the next vintage.
Also worth noting, is the fantastic fly-fishing of the Tongariro River at the edge of New Zealand’s oldest National Park, which is just a short walk from our restaurant.
Tongariro River Estate River Vineyard & Restaurant is situated on Mill Lane which is off Grace Rd, Turangi.
Mondays: Closed (except during school holidays and public holidays)

Delightful setting, fabulous food, lovely wines, served by people who “knew their stuff” when it came to food/wine matching, friendly & happy to engage without being intrusive.
We thought the menu was balanced and interesting. He went with the Lamb Rack, I went for the Pork Belly, and we were both delighted with our choices – cooked & served to perfection
We will be back!! – very keen to try the Brunch menu with friends in the not too distant future.
Nice service by waitress and maitre’d.
Meals came our beautifully presented, however only a couple of minor issues. The sizes of the entrees and mains were quite different.
Few of us had the Calamari and Mussels for the Entree. For the bowl of Mussels at $14, it was great value and for the ones who had the Mussels, they said they were devine. However the rest that had the Calamari at $16 we were very disappointed. 3 Tiny bits of Calamari on a bowl of cucumber , tomato and a bit red onion and olives. Felt that there should have been at least 6 decent size ones, we realise it was an entree, but felt a bit ripped off at the price. However the Calamari was beautiful and tasted amazing.
Mains – Again beautifully presented, most ordered the steak, pork belly or venison. Portion size was great on these dishes. Then a few of us ordered the salmon at $32. It was so disappointing. It was like an entree size and a small thin sliver of salmon, on top of a plate of veges, in fact the salmon was lost in the veges.
We felt very ripped off, although the salmon was very tasty and cooked perfectly, to get a such a tiny sliver of salmon was not on. I really hope the chef can improve on this as we really should have complained.
The steak was about 4 times the size of our piece of salmon at $34 so we should have really sent the salmon back.
However the service was really great, wines were lovely. Maybe they could tweak the Calamari and Salmon on their menu as I am sure there will be more complaints. For that size salmon anywhere else you would probaby only pay about $22. Shame really as everything else was great.
Great evening though.
The mains were very creative and perfectly cooked. We had two appetizers that were awesome also.
The pinot and chardonnays were both wonderful.
It’s charming and elegant. The staff are friendly and professional.
The wine list is extensive, yet I chose to sample their wine from their vineyard and what a smart decision that was. Their wine is sensational!
Food is great and more importantly fresh – it’s seasonal and reflects the local available produce.
Enjoy, I certainly did!
The menu was suitably broad and consisted of some imaginative flavour combinations. Being rather hungry we started with the home made mushroom soup which hit the spot! I then had the lamb shank and my mate had the home made pasta both of which we enjoyed and returned empty plates! We were making light work of their rather nice River Wine, we made light work of two bottles of Pinot Noir 2007. We did not have room for desert but others seemed to enjoy theirs. The decor is nice, the place clean. Staff were friendly, nice to see young people developing their own business.
The atmosphere was fantastic. The restaurant was classy yet unpretentious whilst the food and wine really were first class and excellent value for money.
I strongly recommend anyone visiting this lovely area to at least try these great wines, but if like me you love great food reserve at table for dinner as this place is surely only going to get busier.

The food was so good we had brunch the next day and also called in as well at the end of our holiday as we headed back to Auckland.
Our only negative comment would be that the staff serving seemed to be having a tough time dealing with the numbers of guests however we still had lots of smiles and nothing seemed to much trouble.
Portion size could have been a little bigger
