Route 72 Cafe Bar Emporium Ltd (aptly named after the Inland Scenic Route on which it is situated only a half hour drive from Christchurch) offers a unique experience of a fantastic New Zealand view of mountains and valley. Enjoy great food (menu or home baked snacks), local North Canterbury award winning wines, huge range of beers, organic juices, organic and fair trade coffee. The emporium is stacked with beautiful desirables to soothe any shopoholic while others can just relax and enjoy the country atmosphere.
A wonderfully engaging visual and gastronomic experience. There’s no getting bored here as you muddle around a 21st century version of the Dickensian “Old Curiosity Shop.” Have a coffee, a tipple, or a bite – it’s all here in this,Cust’s sparklingly clean, wonderfully engaging and definitely memorable little eatery. Just the “bee’s knee’s” for a Sunday drive and a relaxing afternoon.

Having owned and run an upmarket accommodation/dining Lodge for 10 years and hearing my own guest comments about Route 72, I decided to try it for myself.
I was very impressed from the first few minutes after entering and thereafter.
A cosy, clean and very friendly business with a myriad of nicknack’s, artworks, furniture etc etc to look at in the shop, plus excellent food and very helpful friendly service. Will now reccommend Route 72 without hesitation to my Sth travelling clients.

We have dined at Route 72 on many an occasion, the staff are very efficient ,very attentive and always pleasant and go out of their way to help. I would happily recommend, we had 2 pizzas yesterday, they were very nice and not a scrap left on the platter … Many many thanks to all the staff for making our visits memorable. : )

My wife and I frequent the Café and we love it. Service is good, the food is excellent, the presentation is very good, and the desserts are delightful.
Certainly worth a trip out of your way during the weekend!

We have used this restaurant on several occasions and the food and service has always been above average. This last visit was disappointing to say the least and when we came to pay there is a surcharge on credit card use, not an issue really but 1. should be informed before dinning and 2 on a dinner account for two people of $96 I find adding 1.75% unusual.

Been to this restaurant before and recommended it to some friends. We thought we would take them out there for an afternoon drive, a couple of drinks along with pizza and wedges and to check out their gift shop. The pizza had a beautiful topping but the bottom was very uncooked. I ate the top of the piece of pizza that I had and made a comment to the waitress as I thought they might like to know in case the ovens bottom grill had gone. She took the piece to the chief and came back with the excuse that they have now been getting their brie cheese from ‘Trents’ a different supplier since the earthquake, and it was because the cheese was too oily. The oil had definitely not gone through the base as the base was dry, white and floury. Disappointed that they had blamed the suppliers cheese as we feel this was not the cause. It simply had an undercooked bottom. There was kind of an apology, but was made to feel uncomfortable for the constructive feedback ….. and the surcharge for the credit card topped it off.

Visited here and had an okay breakfast.
Very disappointed that when we approached counter to pay found a sign saying 3% surcharge for credit cards.
Print this on menu or advise people earlier. To be told “this has been our policy since April” didn’t really help, prior to April did you offer a discount for cash.
We had intended bringing a group 10+ for a lunch but now won’t

Stopped in for Breaky on our way down south. Staff were very welcoming and attentive. Food was yummy definitely will go back for more. The gift shop was an added bonus (although my partner might disagree as Breakfast cost him a little extra after I had a browse in it!)
Oh and your opening times need to be updated.

What an amazing place, fabulous food, very well presented and we were looked after very well. Could have spent more time looking round all the gifts for sale, there were just so many to choose from. We were a group of 5 and all of us were very impressed. Such a great place in a rural setting. Well worth a visit. We will be back again.

Lovely setting, lovely view (from upstairs), friendly staff and wonderfully zany gift shop cum restaurant. The food is lovely and the atmosphere is pleasantly muted, carpet on the floor and quiet music. The place is a destination in itself, but there is also the “Fairy Shop” and the Little Rose nursery to visit! You can easily spend the better part of a day at Cust. NB nursery and Fairy shop appear to have their “weekend” on Monday and Tuesday. But Route 72 is open !!
