Had a great evening. Nice decor. We all enjoyed our dishes. Kitchen and staff coped well with a busy night! Staff attentive and helpful. The pork and ginger dish was gr8!Would go again.

Friendly service, lively cheerful atmosphere in the place. Had seafood noodle soup which was delicious – all my table sampled it and pronounced it excellent. One person at our table had something that was too hot for her – the waiter promptly got her a glass of trim milk to help deal with the chillies. Reasonable price, pleasant, nearly full but not too noisy – I was very happy there.

My first and only time I will be attending sorry. Had an evening meal here, ordered for a large group and we were stuffed onto a table that had too many seats for the amount of people it could fit. Upon ordering, we were unable to share meals as I was with my Girlfriend as well, which was upsetting. When we ordered the $16 marinated chicken i think, the chicken was dry, it felt as though the feathers weren’t removed properly and almost seemed as though it were pork, Probably never going to eat here again for the price that was offered.

Had an evening meal here. Our group had a number of clay pot dishes and a rice noodle salad. Service was OK – had some trouble getting waiter’s attention at times. The cooking was good but portions were definitely on the small side. Authencity was present in flavours but they do not provide the usual garnishes (bean sprouts, lemon wedges and Vietnamese mint). Also disappointing were the clay pot dishes. Normally clay pot implies the dish has been cooked in the actual clay pot which imbues it with a special flavour. Instead the clay pots were just the serving vessels so the dishes were just ordinary. Overall expensive for Vietnamese, if portions were larger then it might be OK value.

I’d definitely recommend Saigon Van. Delicious food, competitive prices, and nice setting. The set menu for two is especially good. Service usually fine, but was disappointed by my last visit — despite reserving and arriving on time, our table was given away to someone else when we got there and they asked us to wander around town for fifteen minutes. Mistakes can happen, but I was expecting them to be more apologetic. Won’t stop me coming back again, though.

I’ve eaten at this restaurant more than any other in Dunedin. The meals are delicious and affordable. Their pho is almost on par with Fisherman’s Plate in Wgtn (no mean feat – I’ve had plenty of pho in Vietnam and it wasn’t as good), and the chicken with lemongrass and chilli is excellent, too. My only reservations are that the portions of meat in some of the dishes should be slightly larger, and some of the garnishes and condiments that should accompany dishes such as pho are missing.

Really enjoy Saigon Van. The prices are good and the food is yum. Especially a fan of the Hue Spicy Beef Noodle soup.
Full of flavor
Is a small venue so it can be crowded, but one of my top lunch spots.

Really great food and exceptional service! I had never had Vietnamese food before so I wasn’t sure what to expect but the flavours were rich and amazing. We had a table of 4 and 3 of the 4 absolutely loved their dishes. I might suggest putting pictures on the menu of the dishes though for those who have never had Vietnamese food before, because 1 of our table ordered something and he didn’t realise it was on noodles with no sauce so pictures might help. But otherwise, fantastic

Last year, I started eating regularly at Saigon Van. I’ve tried around 50% of the menu offerings. All the food is high quality, and well prepared. The staff are all very friendly and professional.

My favourite two meals are chicken with lemongrass and chili, and braised pork with Vietnamese style egg, although some of the other meals come in close behind.

I’ve tried other Vietnamese restaurants in Wellington and Christchurch, and so far I’ve failed to find any with food the same quality as Saigon Van.

If you’ve not had Vietnamese food before, give it a try! Eating at Saigon Van will raise your expectations for quality and service from other restaurants.

I dont normally write reviews but am so staggered at the bad review for takeaways given below I’m making an exception. I travel the country and took my wife and two friends to Saigon Van where we ordered the banquet. What an incredible, beautiful and inexpensive feast. Absolutely delicious and such great value I left a $20 tip (something else I rarely do). If you want a fantastic and different night out this is the place to go Mark de Lacy aka The Minstrel

Have just bought take-aways for 2 adults and 2 children. The cost was $70 and there wasn’t enough by far. Servings were pathetic and fluffed up by rice and shredded cabbage. We threw a lot of it out as it didn’t even taste nice. By far the most expensive disappointing take-away ever! Dont go there!!

I like the lunch menu as it’s cheaper with good amount of food. my favourite dishes are the hot beef soup and the seafood salad :D as for me the dinner menu, the amount of food has not so much different from the lunch menu but the price is quite a lot more expensive. another thing is that i love spicy food and the chili sauce over here is not spicy at all. Probably that’s why i almost finish the whole bowl of chili sauce. So what I’m saying about the chili sauce, if they don’t want to run out of chili sauce, they should make it a little spicier (since not everybody likes spicy as much as i do) :D :D:D:D oh, and they might want to add kids menu. when i go there with my daughter, it gets quite confusing what to order for her.

Loved the food, all entrée’s are divine my mother had one of their salads, and my aunt had another both were great. I had a mixed plate of rolls which were delicious but by far their spring rolls are the best. Unlike any i have tasted before. I highly recommend having an entrée and main unless you are not that hungry and if that is the case have one of their entrée’s i found them slightly better then the mains. For myself, and two others the cost for the evening came to $130 which included 4 entrées, 4 mains, 3 soft drinks and cock-age on 2 bottles of wine. Overall service was great. The only downside to the night was that we had unfortunately eaten their early in the week and when they have a function or is a busy evening they dress up in traditional Vietnamese clothing.

Great food, very fresh with a unique taste at a moderate price. The service was impeccable, the staff friendly and polite. I recommend the freshly iced lemon juice I tried as it was incredible; so tangy and refreshing. I must say that the interior decor was classy and a nice reflection of Vietnamese culture. A must try for oriental lovers.
