We went to Salt for brunch. It started with the restaurant manager pouring our water and missing the glass entirely so we both got wet feet. His response was to laugh and say “ah well the deck needed a clean”.

My partner had the big breakfast which he was happy with about apart from the dry eggs and even dryer toast. I ordered the “salad” which was 5 mesculin leaves underneath a 50c piece size polenta cake and chicken. The same restaurant manager spoke to us when we went to pay and gave us complimentary coffee because of the “salad” (we raised it with the waiter when he asked how the meals were) but then proceeded to tell us that salads dont necessarily need to have vegetables!

We had only started heading back to Salt because for a long time the food was quite below parr and we had heard that there was a new chef and worth checking out again. After this it will again be on our “not to go” list.

in my opinion, it’s a best restaurant in New Plymouth. Had dinner for 8 last weekend. For starter, try seafood soup, it’s just best! NZ mussels also very good. Main meals were excellent too, especially fish dishes. Staff is very attentive. Awesome sea views. Would go there again!

Went for lunch for two last weekend. Enjoyed it very much. My husband had pan fried fish of the day and it was outstanding. I had seafood soup, i liked it very much, highly recommended. Staff was very friendly and knowledgeable. Will be back again!

I recently took the family here for lunch and we were all quite disappointed with the food.
My son had steak and wasn’t even asked how he would like it cooked. He left a third of it on the plate as it was full of gristle.
My wife and daughters dish was over-powered with jalapeno and the rice was tasteless.
Dessert platter was nice but the brownie base was so hard that you really needed a sharp knife to cut it and still expected it to shoot across the room at any moment.
The garlic bread was one of the worst things….$10 for 3 thin diagonal slices of baguette with garlic butter on????
The staff were great though but we won’t return.

We had a fabulous meal here a few weeks ago! Great service with a waiter who remembered us from six weeks before when we came for a beer on the balcony after a walk and knew which organic one it was we liked!! Very good food and lovely atmosphere. We’ll definitely be back!

Food was fine, much like other places around but the staff were great and the views would make you want to come back.

I have worked in the hospitality industry for years now both in the kitchen and as a host/waitress and people really should have the common sense to expect a long wait when it comes to tables of 6 or more when you don’t book! If you don’t book that means tables can’t be moved prior to getting busy, it also means a lot of co-ordination last minute whilst the restaurant is full in terms of where to not sit people just so you can be accommodated, it means possibly another member of staff would have been rostered on and in addition it’s a stock issue in the kitchen; so seriously don’t get annoyed with a venue for perhaps letting a little stress show when a table of 12 shows up at the door without a booking when they already have a queue out the door! Overall this restaurant performs well with food and service.

Sadly this restaurant with one of the best views in town, is well known for patchy food and service. Unfortuntely we were obliged to dine there recently as part of a group. Half of our party ordered snapper and it was so old, you could smell it coming. The fish was dry and unpalatable. We did complain but we noted staff continued to offer it to other customers. There is absolutely no excuse for old fish in a seaside city nor should any chef be prepared to send out such a meal. We paid $30 each for the insult.

salt has had a makeover, they have an excellent chef at the moment, the service is great. have never dined in a group so have not experienced what the previous person encountered, but have to say the last twice i have had lunch there, everything was first class in my opinion.

We went there for brunch yesterday. They were horrified and told us there would be a long wait as they were busy. There were only 6 other groups of no more than 2 people per group. There was 13 in ours.
We left, went to an adjacent restuarant where we were welcome and as we left there another larger group of 20 had encountered the same appalling non service. For the best situated restuarant in town this treatemnt of groups is unaaceptable and I have written to the management to bring this to their attention. But I will not be rushing back that is for sure,,,,

I had a $200 voucher to use at Salt so I tried almost everything on the menu. The highlights were the mussels and the cervesa. The food was first class with the prices reasonable. I highly recommend Salt as one of NZ premier fine dining establishments. Pure class
