We have been to salt 3-4 times. My husband and I love this restaurant as it never fails to deliver. The meals are excellent as is the service. It was nice to see some changes to the menu (we hadn’t been for around 6 months). My husband says the seafood chowder at Salt is as good as it gets, personally I don’t order any starter as the meals are sufficient. I would like to try their breakfasts one day soon.
Went to Salt last night for a bite to eat before a 50th we were heading to the waitress greeted us and asked if we were after dinner.
Unfortunately they were fully booked out but she advised us we were most welcome to sit in the bar and if we could decide quickly she could squeeze us in before a large table so we wouldn’t have to wait. This type of service from a very enthusiastic young lady who obviously enjoys her job is quite hard to find. We enjoyed a beautiful seafood chowder and mushroom salad will be definitely coming back keep it up Salt Restaurant!

Sunday brunch. Service a little slow initially, but understandable given the popularity. No complaints. I had a corn fritter and bacon stack. K had a bacon butty. Probably give both a 9/10. Coffee fine. High quality brekky in a great location. Like.
My family and I went to Salt for dinner in Feb 2013. We were seated quickly as we had booked and our drinks orders were taken, drinks arrived. All was fine until my mother who doesn’t eat big meals saw the blue cod go to a man at the table next to us, she asked the waitress if it would be possible to get a half sized. The waitress told us this was possible and that she would make it the one off the kids menu. We thought that they would make it about the size of a half portion. When our meals arrived.. Finally we were quite shocked to see that the blue cod was more like a small fish finger that was about three small bites worth and a few chips. Mum did not want to make a big deal so did not say anything, we then had to call the waitress over for drinks because she had not come to see if we wanted any. I had the pork fillet, which was lukewarm, overcooked and tough!! We could then hear the waitress talking to another whilst both staring at our table about how she thought that we were annoyed over something to do with our meals. This was considered rude when all it would have taken was someone to come and ask rather than talking loudly about it behind us. All up I believe that I would not return to this restaurant unless they made some serious progress.

Salt is a great all rounder. I have been there several times; with my kids, my parents, my Grandma and my friends. Their menu is diverse, with a wide range of options for kids and vegetarians. The decor is warm and inviting and I love their art deco features such as the light fittings and the mirrors in the bathrooms. There is room to park your sleeping baby in a push chair next to the table, and they don’t always put mushrooms in their vegetarian risotto – such a treat for this fungi-phobe! The staff are friendly and the service is top notch.
Recently when my coffee was late to arrive I was presented with an apology and a fully stamped coffee card for a free cup next time. Well done Salt, we’ll be back!

I have been to Salt Restaurant many times. The seafood chowder is the best! Great service and beautiful views of the beach…fully recommend

Had my wedding anniversary at Salt tonight and would just like to post my feedback, was such great service, was attended to upon arrival with a friendly waiter, who led us to a window seat which I asked for when I booked. We ordered drinks and knew what we wanted to have as starters so ordered at same time, I got calamari and my husband spring rolls, yummy on both accounts, for my main I had stuffed chicken breast and husband the ribeye, perfectly cooked steak, so I was told and the chicken was moist and the sauce with it was very nice. We had the intention of sharing a dessert together but both of us were full unfortunately so will come back soon for coffee and dessert. Thank you Salt for finishing our anniversary on a high.

A group of friends and I dined at Salt on Saturday 12th Jan 2013. We were seated and attended to straight away for drinks. We then asked to move outside and the staff were very accommodating. We ordered garlic bread that was chibatta, rock hard, and no garlic what so ever. Herb bread would be a better suited name. 2 meals came out first, the others came out 10 minutes later. a friend and I both had chicken and mushroom filo parcels. The filo parcel was huge but was tasteless and bland, no flavour at all. my partner had the lamb, which was cooked to perfection and another had the steak, which was also cooked to perfection. The portions of the steak and lamb meals were very small. The menu stated that certain meals came with season veges, but did not state that you would have to share. we thought that was atrociousness that they had to share. We also over heard a the table next to us taking about how rude it was that they had to share vegetables. Prices were good, staff and service was very good. could work on the chef though. We were all left hungry and ended up getting pizza on the way home.
We are staying in St Clair, decided to have a drink and dine at Salt. We were hugely disappointed in lack of service, we were welcomed in as we looked around to get a table but were then ignored for 15mins, whilst a couple who came in after us were seated, given wine list and menus, waters for the table, left to ponder, then orders placed. The waitress was stopped and asked by us for a wine list, we decided not to eat there as were unimpressed with lack of service. They were not busy, three waitresses were on, one talking away with a chap at a table next to ours, not paying attention, another constantly at bar, third attending to table explained .
When I paid I informed the staff as to why we were not eating there, one of the waitresses went to giggle and started to argue with me and correct me that it was a bar where you order at bar – hello other tables were served at table by a waitress! This display of attitude made us even more pissed off do not expect to be treated in such a manner, just confirmed their lack of professionalism and pride in ones position in such an establishment. We are sure the owner would be totally hacked off that loss of business was through their lack of service – starter, two mains and drinks were missed out on.

Would just like to offer my thanks and appreciation to Salt Restaurant. I am a vegan and I ate here on a Saturday night and was not disappointed. I called ahead to explain I was a vegan and did they have anything on the menu I could eat. I was told no but as I had called ahead the chef was willing to prepare a dish for me. The dish was amazing with the vegetables being cooked perfectly but the star was the collection of sauces on the side. All were tasty and the salsa verde being the best I have ever had. Is hard as a vegan to find anywhere to eat in Dunedin where you aren’t treated as a huge inconvenience or served bland food. Salt made me feel welcomed and was nice to have a chef willing to cater for my vegan needs on what was a busy night. Thank- you salt.

My partner and I come here generally mid-week on a Wednesday for dinner and always come home happy. The fish of the days are my favourite as they are always tasty and interesting. Salmon with romesco sauce been my favourite so far. We came with friends last Friday 6th of July and was a little disappointed. Fish of the day was a collection of existing items on the menu. My husband also found his lamb pie to not be up to the same standard as usual. Small complaints as otherwise a good meal for all. My tip as best place in Dunedin to eat mid-week.
This is the second time we have had lunch here – sitting outside on a lovely sunny but cold Dunedin day. We have never been for dinner but have had a lovely breakfast here. Today I had the beef burger and my wife had the honey and ginger pumpkin salad. Both very good and the service excellent and they even brought out a bowl of water for our wee dog.
We must come for dinner. As good as always.

We dined here on the first night of our stay in Dunedin. The meals – bacon & mushroom pasta & sausage with mash were superb & large. The service was excellent & friendly. The kids said there meals were yummy but the pizza could of been larger as it was only half size with 3 small pieces, it came with a large amount of yummy tasting fries though. Today we decided to head back to try the breakfast/brunch menu. The eggs Benedict was the best ever with a generous amount of bacon, the bacon & egg butties were Delicious and the kids pancakes were also scrummy ! Coffee excellent & service great! Definitely recommend this place to everyone. Kids very welcome to. Happy customer.

My girlfriend and I ate here on a busy and cold friday night. Our waitress was very friendly. I went for the Fillet Steak whilst my gf had the lamb rump. The steak was delicious – perfectly cooked, with a great potato dish on the side. My gf’s lamb was decent, but lacked a little oomph, though she enjoyed it. Serving size was good but could have been a little bigger for the price. We shared a creme brulee for dessert, which tasted good too, though we’ve probably had better before. However, the niggles are very small and I would reccomend this restaurant – good food, great service, nice atmosphere (on the noisy side, but friendly!).

This is our second review of salt,:-) We dined on Sunday morning and we loved it,Although it was clearly busy we were informed there maybe a wait, this was nice to know as we were in no rush this wasn’t going to be an issue, our meals actually arrived really fast and were delicious!, I had the beef burger which was juicy and tasty , we shared a garlic bread which was also good and my husband had eggs Benedict, the eggs were nice and soft and he said that the hollandaise was great, all in all another great dining experience, we always recommend salt to all our friends and will continue doing so the coffee is also fantastic, as was the dark haired girl that served us,
keep it up salt!
keep it up salt!

Today we dined at Salt and were not impressed. It took a whole hour from the time we ordered our food till we got it. We were on a deadline as had to be somewhere else at a certain time and we ordered immediately and told the waitress about our rush. She was friendly although a bit dizy and still our food was an hour late. When questioned where it was she said it was just coming out right then, which took another 5 minutes. 3 of us had to actually wrap our burgers in serviettes and go. And although we asked for take away bags/containers, whatever they might have had, the waitress said she would go and get them and never returned! A very disappointing experience. And my burger was horrible to top things off.

Salt has a nice atmosphere with wood tables and panelling and a fireplace. To start with we had the seafood chowder which was good although it needed a lot of salt, which is ironic really. For mains I had the fish special which was fillets of a sole which was delicious. Unfortunately the pasta dishes were not as good. The tiger prawn linguine was very watery and the sauce needed to be reduced down a lot more, and the prawns weren’t very good quality at all. In fact the dish tasted a lot better with the prawns picked out. The pasta special had a sharp tomato taste a bit like a supermarkrt sauce and wasn’t nice to eat. The desserts were very good. This would have been a pretty good meal if not let down so badly by the pasta dishes.
I am fortunate enough to live locally and absolutely love Salt. The service is always friendly and environment comfortable and warm. The food is never disappointing but my weekend ritual is always a coffee and muffin after a walk along the beach – absolute heaven! Keep it up guys

The risotto was bland and flavourless, a huge disappointment. However, the decor and staff were both great and I will go back and try something else.

Everything was absolutely brilliant. Great service, wonderful wine selection and delicious food. Very reasonable prices for what you get.
Would recommend to anyone, and will definitely be going back myself.

I had a meal here with two friends last week and the food was divine. I’ve also had brunch here a few weeks earlier and again, fabulous food, good serving sizes, reasonably priced and great service. I adored the chicken curry and was just gutted I had no room for desert because it all looked good.
I have eaten and had drinks at this restaurant several times and have nothing bad to say, the food is always great and the service exceptional, keep up the good work guys, I will be back.

We just wanted to take the time to not only comment on the great food that we had at salt, which was absolutely divine, but also on the service which is the best we have ever received. This young man, who we had our doubts about judging the state of his hair, was actually the friendliest and best waiter we have been served by. His enthusiasm and friendliness was above standard, his attention to detail and making sure we were completely happy was second to none. He managed to sell us a bottle of wine instead of a glass, he sold us desserts when we couldn’t finish our main meals, all because of his great attitude. I wish that all waiters and waitresses were of this caliber. Since this visit we refuse to dine anywhere else. Well done and thank you young man…and we apologise for ever judging you on your “loud” haircut!!!

This is a great spot to eat in Dunedin we are from out of town and have tried many eateries in Dunedin on our frequent visits and have been regulars since finding salt the staff are great and the food is always yum,we think its quite well priced and the menu has good variety we particularly love the prawn linguine, my husband loves the sticky date pudding the chef was even so kind to give me the recipe on our last visit “not many places would do that ” 5 stars from us keep it up

Good food, reasonably priced. Nice setting but evening let down by poor service. Our meal arrived in good time, after we finished we waited for coffee but nobody came near us again. Nothing cleared off the table. After half an hour we paid up and went elsewhere.

Great food and great service, very professional and didnt have to ask for anything. my partner thought the meals were a bit on the smaller side for what we were paying for but that didnt bother me as much
1
Very pleasing semi formal setting we enjoyed a lunch meal of “The fish of the day”. The grilled sole fillet served with mash was cooked to perfection and well presented, the service was prompt and efficient. signed M & J.

Great eating spot. Excellent food and service. One of my fav places to eat in Dunedin. A little pricey but all and all you pay for what you get.
