How difficult is it to make a bacon sandwich? It’s just two rashers of bacon between two slices of toast. It really shouldn’t be that hard. It seems it’s too complicated for Scarborough Fare Cafe who have admitted they could’n't manage it.

No worries, there are plenty of other places in Sumner that can.

Have used this cafe on a regular basis for the past three years. It used to be a very welcoming and friendly place but sadly recently the staff are sullen and disinterested and the service is very very slow. I think that they need to realise that although they are the only place on the sea front at the moment it will not always be that way and they will lose a lot of regulars if they do not improve. Really sad to see this brilliantly located venue go down hill :-(

Took grandchildren for lunch recently, ordered pancakes from childs menu, waited 20mins so kids were hungry, the pancakes were tiny smaller than a pikelet, thin and doughy, there were 3 on the plate, 2yr old ate in 2 mouthfuls..complained to staff the meal was poor, not enough for the price, they were not at all helpful, said”what do you expect us to do about it, after all it is a childs meal” no offer of more, I realise we should have complained before the kids ate them but they were very hungry and had waited long enough. I no longer go there even for a coffee when I regularly walk past.

Excellent little cafe with some seriously good food.
Staff always very welcoming and interested in what’s going on.
Spent many afternoons there when it was the only place our daughter could walk to after breaking neck in car accident.
Recommend to anyone for coffee through to a solid dining experience.
One of the places we looked forward to revisiting when we came back to NZ in January ’11.

My wife and I have been coming to Scarborough Fare Restaurant and Cafe since the very first day (The present owners) started business there.
We have always been treated with respect and generosity. The coffee and food is excellent. Where else can one sit on the beachfront with such an ambient atmosphere, friendly chat, and a feeling of belonging.
The restaurant was fully renovated prior to the opening and is kept spotless inside and out. Every day the windows are washed inside and out and a vac blower is used to sweep away leaves from around the property.
Your hosts of Scarborough Fare show kindness in many ways — even to supplying fittings for tying your pooch’s leash to the beach retaining wall (one metre away from outside tables) and continually filling the dog bowls with fresh water.
This business is an example of how all cafe’s should be run. The hosts show patience and temperament above the call of duty.
For those who like art, come to Scarborough Fare to see the amazing display of paintings available for purchase.

I came across Scarborough Fair on a wee walk down the beach in Sumner 3months ago. Since then i eat at the cafe nearly every weekend, the food is fantastic…i especially love the chicken nachos, the apricot chicken pizza, and the pancakes are to die for. There is out door seating which is great if you have a beautiful summers day. The staff are very friendly and more than happy to help. There is also a kiosk attached at the end of the cafe for those of you out for a stroll on a sunny day and fancy an ice cream.
A wonderful atmosphere, fantastic food at great prices…so glad i found this place.

Manager recieves complaint , asks customer for a fist fight
I have just returned from having lunch with my family (wife, 2 children, father, uncle aunt etc). The food quality and attitude of the manager/owner were both awful. I ordered the beer battered fish and began eating. The fish tasted slightly dubious. I’m not a fussy eater, especially when I’m hungry, so I proceeded to eat one of the two pieces of fish. I asked for my Father’s opinion and he agreed that the taste wasn’t right- there was definitely something wrong with the fish. I had eaten over half the fish, but felt a bit nauseous. I took the plate to the counter and placed it discretely on the side bench and asked to see the manager. I told him that the fish tasted off. He listened to my story, took the plate out the back where he and the chef tasted it. He came back and said the fish was fine and he could offer me a hot chocolate. I asked for another meal to be provided but he refused. I asked for the price of the fish to be reduced and he refused again. There was no apology or regret. He simply challenged me about the fish saying that 100 people had eaten it before and no one had complained at all. I was not happy with his attitude and a heated exchange developed. This ended with him challenging me to a fight with him and his kitchen hand outside!! We went outside but he didn’t want to fight because he realised my family and his customers were witnessing the whole thing. So, he demanded that I pay the entire bill and get out. I decided to put an end to the embarrassment, paid my bill in full and left. My day is ruined.
The manager should feel ashamed at the way he handled this situation.
Do not eat here.
