We often come to Ohope for our breks and during the holidays we brought some American friends with us and all of us went to eat at Sea Thai restarant-Well the food was deliciousand beautifuuly presented and arrived in a very timely manner considering the size of our party-20 people-in fact we came 3 times(2x for restaurant meals and 1x for takeaways) and it was great every time.

Our American friends said this restaurnt compares favorably with what they have back in the States and are looking forward to coming back-in addition, the restaurant has a comments book which is packed with cooemts which accord with ours

OK let’s start with the positives… The view from inside is great. The staff not including the owner are friendly.
The negatives… It says open til late outside but don’t turn up at 8pm and expect to eat because you won’t be! The menu is very limited but that’s not always a bad thing. The food does take quite some time to arrive and put simply isn’t any where near real Thai food, it lacks any real Thai fragrance and is very mildly spiced. The meat was slightly rubbery and the veg barely cooked.
We have eaten there twice with a two month gap and it was the same both times we ate so at least it is consistently poor!

I have read the previous reviews, and I have to agree with all but one! This place was shocking…..Food and beverage took a while to come out, and when food did come out, the rice was stodgy, portions were small, and really not much taste, and yes a little rubbery.
Music was so low you could hardly make out what was playing, all you could hear was the inside water feature.
The waitstaff were over apologizing for the long wait, and the attire to me was inappropriate. Short dresses that they spent most of their time pulling back down to where they should be. Long hair not tied back…Have they heard of food safety/hygiene! Definitively would not go back, and would not recommend the place.

Worst Thai I have ever had. Do I have to give it even a star???? Owner full of himself. we got takeaways. Ony 2/3rds full. Meat tough. Hardly any vegies. Rice was ok!!!!!!! Dark so could not enjoy the view which would be the best part. If anyone wants Thai I suggest they drive to Rotorua and go to Wild Rice. Great Thai food there. I think decor tacky. Whole place is tacky.

I totally agree, not even worth one star. I have eaten Thai many times (including in Thailand) and this to me was not Thai food! I had a Tom Kha veg soup which looked and tasted like a can of coconut cream with some veggies floating in it. I read an earlier comment on this site that I assume was posted by the owner or relative of the owner who said that the chefs are Thai themselves. Surely then they would know how to make a basic Thai soup? My 2 friends were also disappointed with their bland, ridiculously overpriced meals. To add to our dining pleasure (not) we were greeted by a dead mouse caught in a trap under the couch. yuck! that put me right off my coconut cream soup!
Yes the views are lovely, but you’d be better off to bring your own meal to the wharf to enjoy it!
After some time had passed I thought I would give Sea Thai a second chance with the takeaway menu (I am a local and it was pizza Louis day off), paid over $80 for 4 meals (containers half full) of more bland coconut cream and bits of so-called meat. If your visiting Ohope and want takeaways, go to Pizza Louis parked outside the Mobil (best pizza ever- and yes I have travelled Europe!), if not- ohiwa fish and chips or go over the hill for other takeaways.

This place is not even worth one star!

A group of us went there for a meal, paid $40 per person for a banquet. The food was poorly cooked, some of it like rubber and the quantities were very small. They promised us a fruit salad for dessert and what we received were little portions from a Watties can!

Quite disgraceful!

I like Thai food, often have it in Gisborne where I live, but will NEVER have it in Ohope again!

This place gives Thai Restaurants a bad name!

I’m a regular at Sea Thai Restaurant & Bar [Which has been gorgeously redecorated since the ownership of Pier 5] and quite frankly, I find every dine an extremely pleasant experience!

The food is unbeatable which doesn’t just taste amazing but I find very affordable for a family meal.
The menu has a great range to choose from and I’m reassured the food is actually Thai as the cooks are Thai themselves and obviously have great experience with this kind of cuisine.

The waiters and waitresses are very friendly and make it obvious that they will try all they can to make your meal as joyful as possible. [I can't help but tip them every time!]

If I don’t feel too hungry but want to catch up with some friends, I just pop over to the bar which has a great range of drinks to choose from.

I love to the peacefulness of the area and the amazing views from both inside and outside the restaurant while I enjoy my meal.

An extra bonus is we can take the kids along for a family outing or leave them at home while you enjoy a romantic night out with the partner! Or there’s also the choice of leaving them all behind and having a girls/guys night. ;D

I can’t think of anything to pull this great place down so I can only rate it with 5 stars! *****

I think 1 star is too high for this restaurant. We were told that this was the closest Thai Restaurant in Ohope and not wanting to drive over the hill to Whakatane decided to give it a try. Well – we should have taken that drive. The first sign was that on a Saturday night there were only 2 people dinning there – we just wanted takeaways – I ordered 2 entree’s of fish cakes, 1 Pad thai with Prawns and 1 stirfried vegetables – then they tried to charge me $72! I queried it and was told the numbers on the takeaway menu were different from the dine in menu. It took some time and 2 people to take the order manually (e.g. write it on a piece a paper). We were asked if we would like a couple of coffee’s while we were waiting – I thought as an apology for the muck up – but no – they wanted to charge $9 for 2 black coffee’s – I told them that was an outragous price, and no thanks. The meal took ages to come. When we got back to where we were staying – if i had had the engery I would have driven back with it. it was the the blandest, poorest excuse for a Thai meal I have ever experienced, and the fish cakes were like rubber – had obviously be bought in and then deep fried. I can buy a Pad Thai with prawns from a takeaway in Auckland for $10 which is 100 time more tastie than this.
Lots of staff not knowing what they are doing, and no idea of customer service. Even if your tired and hungry – take a drive back over the hill – it would be worth it – don’t go here
