Come on down and experience Paihia’s most amazing views while enjoying fresh fish and chips with a cold jug of beer or glass of wine on the deck of the old ship Tui. The ship is permanently parked on the beach, next to the Waitangi bridge. Such a unique experience. A “must do” in Paihia.

Well below average food. Wouldn’t go back. Chips were too dry, fish was far too greasy and oysters were horrible.
2 fish, 2 oysters, 6 chicken nuggets and 1 scoop of chips for $29 – what a rip-off!
Only happy to give them 1 star as the staff were friendly and service was fast – was very few people there at the time so not hard to keep up.

We like Shippeys, it’s an honest straightforward place without airs and graces.

The quality of the food is high, the service is good in the laid back “hey it’s New Zealand” style.

There’s plenty of parking, the views are fantastic, prices are very reasonable……..what more do you want?

If you want good old Kiwi tucker, Shippeys is the place to go

We recently had a meal here, service was very poor. The waitress made it obvious it was a hastle serving us (surprising as we were the only people in the place) then overcharged one of us and decided to argue to say she hadn’t. After careful explaning and some basic math skills she was convinced.
My friend and I had dory which was full of bones! I’m a fisherman it only takes a bit of effort to remove the bones.
When brought to her attention she exclaimed it was only human error..(yes it is but if someone makes you a bad coffee and you tell them, you expect a new coffee or money back) after more arguing she took the parsel of my fish and chips and threw it out without asking if I had finished (I could at least eaten my chips). She didnt offer to cook me a new piece OR ask if I wanted my money back.
To complete the night, as we were leaving she gave us an awful look muttering under her breath while we drove off finding another dinner.

Comment from SHIPPEY'S of Shippey’s Fresh Fish & Chips 3/03/2012
As the owner and manager on duty at the time i can assure that the only truth in this scenario is that the young man did have bones in his fish. This can happen from time to time especially with fresh fish. Every effort is taken to ensure this doesn’t happen but…    More »

I just recently travelled through to paihia. my wife and i decided to head to shippy’s as we were told how lovely it is. and indeed it was such a great place to set up an establishment our fish and chips were great. and very promptly served. Unfortunately we took a seat on the couch near to the bar and all i could hear the FOH being very rude and loud to other staff on duty we liked were we were seated so we put up with the awkwardness. i run a business down the line and this is not how i would ever treat my employes. but all in all we had a great time and loved the kumara fries.

A great family outing to Shippey’s delivered on every front. My mother reckoned the battered oysters were the best of her 83-years, the kids loved the battered snapper and decided the medium-cut chips were the best (out-ranking shoestrings) and there was NO thick blanket of glug which normally descends a few hours after fish and chips. Loved the cheerful location on the old ship and the sun setting over the Waitangi inlet. It’s highly rated in the Insider’s Guide too.

Hey guys, fresh fish and chips for sure, good prices and portions – we loved the simple small menu of food, it was tasty. Best aioli I’ve had in ages! Service I’ve gotta say was a bit slack, but more than made up for as was super friendly and you play good tunes! We will be back when we come to Paihia next. Interested to hear when you launch your downstairs bar/lounge! :) Roll on Summer!
