Snapdragon Bar & Kitchen is located in the heart of Auckland’s Viaduct Basin, within a large heritage building on the waterfront. Snapdragon is designed as a series of smaller spaces bringing a sense of intimacy to the different lounge areas. The three bars within Snapdragon have their own unique personalities, adorned with a touch of 1940′s vintage glamour and coupled with sweeping harbour views from every vantage point.

The dining room is located on the ground floor with views of the viaduct harbour  and seats 50 guests with a further 14 seated at the beautiful banquet table under the shadow of our two story living wall – the largest in New Zealand. The three bars, the downstairs lobby bar, and the sitting room and games room upstairs, all provide unique and bespoke experiences for those who want to lounge the day or night away.

My partner and I have been here once before when it opened so were excited to see their new menu options. They all sounded delicious and was hard to pick but have to say that the gnocchi was sublime. Next time i need to get it as the main! We were served by a very attentive waitress and even though there was a slight wait on our mains, she kept us informed and kept checking on us. The mains were delicious and the steak was cooked perfectly. We were told prior it was cooked rare-medium so were able to ask for it cooked a little more to be how we liked it. Have always thought the interior of snapdragon is something special and is nothing like anywhere nearby, has great decor. We had a great experience and I am sure we will visit again.

Absolutely APPALLING service.
Bouncers were completely unprofessional as they tried to guilt-trip my partner because he was wearing the so-called wrong shoes by telling him to “turn around and look at your friends – YOU are the one letting the team down” only to let a group of guys after us wearing similar shoes! I even went up to one of the guys in that group and asked whether they had been hassled about their shoes and they said “no”.

My friend and I went to the bathroom and found the “wet floor” sign had been knocked over so we picked it up and put it aside – only to be TOLD OFF (like children – we are 25 years old!) by a staff member. When I politely explained to him that we were only trying to be helpful he rolled his eyes at us and said “whatever girls – get out of here”.

To add to the shocking experience – another staff member began abusing us until we all decided to leave because frankly, we’d had enough.

SNAPDRAGON definitely needs to re-look at their service. Staff appear to be unhappy with their job. I used to go there on a regular basis – however after this horrendous experience with their badly trained staff, I will NEVER be seen there ever again.

We went for a business lunch. There was three of us and it was very quiet when we arrived. The service was good. The bread was yum, but then it kind of went down hill. We all ordered fish. Two had the gamefish and specifically asked if it was cooked, yes it was. When it came out and they started eating it turned out half of it was cooked on one and three quarters on the other so the dishes were sent back. The waitress was happy to do so, but soon brought them back with a no, chief says thats how they should be. After we stopped laughing at this (are we not paying) the manager came over to apologies and tell us you know thats how its cooked. Well tell you waitress to inform people they are raw fish when they ask. To cut a long story short he gave us free deserts and coffee (really yum), I wont go back though because at the end of the day, he who pays should get what he wants. If you cant trust that you don’t go back.

Well I had a fantastic experience at Snapdragon recently so I thought I would give them a virtual high five in the form of an online review of sorts. I don’t remember the staff’s name so this seems the best way to give credit where credits due!

It is not the first time I have been to Snap. I have rolled in there on the odd occasion on nights out, I have enjoyed the ambience in the past so thought I’d give it a go when planning a night out with the girls. The restaurant and bar is cool, different places to sit and little nooks and crannys to relax in. But the dining experience hit home the pleasing combination of cool location, delicious food and friendly and efficient service. Our waitress even handled the ‘…but on the side’ and ‘without the…’ curve balls with good humor PLUS managed to get it all right! A rare occurrence!!!

All in all, topped off with a balmy auckland overlooking the Viaduct, a good evening was had by all and I recommend you give it a try.

Great bread rolls, lovely olives, awesome music! and good service at times … but… the meals were bitterly disappointing, out of the 5 of us one was slightly happy with his steak although it was overdone.. and the rest of us were left thinking the meals were plain… two of us ordered the prawns… we smelt them coming before we saw the waiter they were defiantly not fresh and stunk quite fishy, i left a number of mine as i started to feel ill, when mentioned to the waiter the overly fishy smell he said “well its prawns” both if us eat a reasonable amount of prawns and have never smelt fresh prawns like that! no wonder this place was totally empty on a sunny Monday lunchtime….

We went here in a group of 10 on new years day for drinks after lunch, we were all in a happy mood, but no one was overly drunk.
Over priced for drinks and food considering there was no table service, so we had to keep going to the bar.
After we had spent nearly a $1000, they decided we were to noisy, so no more, there was one other table, may they didn’t need our money. I can’t say the service was terrible because there wasn’t any.

I was really disappointed with Snapdragon.
Wandering aroung the viaduct on a sunny Saturday afternoon looking for where we will have lunch to celebrate my husband’s birthday. We decided to go into Snapdragon, have a drink at the bar and look at the menu.

We were left standing at the bar with no acknowledgement. When a girl did arrive she was not very welcoming at all. No smile or hello. We ordered our drink and I was absolutely horrified when she used my glass to scoop the ice! This is really dangerous and really bad practise. That wasn’t the worst of it though, it was the dirty look and the fact that I got tutted at when I pointed out that the glass did in fact have lipstick on. She threw the ice back in the ice-pit and used a glass (again) to scoop the ice!

By this time I was pretty over the bad service and had no intention of even looking at the menu. The drinks we had were not of the best quality and so we actually ended up leaving them and leaving the premises.
Sorry Snapdragon but you really need to up your game. Serious training needed in your establishment.

We ended up at the Tyler Street Garage and the service was completely at the other end of the spectrum. Pay a visit- you could learn something!

I went to Snap Dragon last week with a group from work and I was really impressed overall with the service, excellent food and drinks selection and the location is great, excellent views over the waterfront. It was great to see the tasty Kirin beer on tap as it is a hard beer to find. The bar was very busy however all the staff were very helpful, friendly and we were all served quickly and there was never any long wait to be served. I Highly recommend Snap Dragon to anyone and look forward to going again this week.

Food is very nice and well cooked but the mains are so small. Went for lunch only had main and left still hungry. So recommend you make sure you order sides with your meal.
We tried ordering bread once the mains were ordered but it never turned up. They blamed the new computer system (oh how original).
The managers wander around asking if all is ok which is nice but they never wait for the response as they have already walked off.

Food was great! only thing is there portion size is very small!! Main size is like entrée size. But they still charge the top dollar. You order you main and it is very small, you also have to order sides to go with it, they not come with potatoes, salad etc.
The food is very nice but you end up leaving still hungry.
Great place if you not hungry and want some great atmosphere, great service and fantastic wine.

My partner and I dined at Snapdragon last week and were very impressed. Not only were the waiters extremely helpful, the food too was superb. We had two main meals which were the corn-fed chicken and the dry-aged beef. Both were cooked perfectly and the steak was especially delicious. We also shared the lemon and lime tart which was full of flavour and enough for two to share. Pricing was as expected and the location was beautiful especially at night with the lights on the water. The upstairs layout with the secret room too shouldn’t be missed.

Nice scenery for a drink, food ok, but Bouncers are abusive. Better places in the Viaduct to go where you don’t have to put up with their rudeness. Hopefully this place won’t last long.

I already love Foxglove in Wellington so came to this new one with high expectations for the fitout and style, and it was great. What I was even more impressed with was the food! I had such a fantastic steak I am still thinking about it two days later. Great for the Viaduct to have a new face on the block in time for summer – this place will pack out. .

Funky, bustling, cool. Food was well cooked, tasty spinach and silver beet side-dish was particularly delicious as was the creme & banana pie. Priced according to the location, $65 each incl. main, dessert , glass of red and strong rich coffee. Service was friendly and attentive. Make sure you have a look upstairs at the various rooms and the to-die-for wall paper. Very happy that Auckland has something like this to offer. My only suggestion would be that management have a chat to the ‘hostess’ re her attire – not appropriate, bordering on embarrassing. In fact the waiters looked a bit odd in the checked shirts too. However overall this is a minor issue and easily fixed. Well done for offering a fine evening.
