Pizzas are really good and tasty. Service is warm and friendly. Prices suit the restaurant. We go here maybe once a month and love it every time. The fish of the day is consistent and delicious. Had the mussels and they were amazing. The steak rocks, always leave the high class restaurant fully satisfied and with a smile on my face.

The place is in a great location big play area for kids
Sadly the food and service area well what is expected
Waiters are all backpackers
Chefs spen their time chatting loudly to each other about their weekends
Resulting in large amounts of over cooked expensive food
Owners do not care
So until this place changes hands there are lots of better places to eat within easy driving range

Awesome venue, love the fireplaces in winter, have enjoyed intimate dinner with friends and have enjoyed with children (great during the day for kids – loads to enjoy and do), the wine is all great with a great local selection and the food is fabulous ! You must go there!!!!

We took Dad to Stables yesterday for lunch, there were both good and bad parts, but overly I would not rate this restaurant. I have to say the atmosphere/decor was lovely, and the service pretty good to, though the staff were young and didn’t know alot about the menu… the food was awful, pretty expensive for the specials menu and orders were wrong. Not to mention I was sick for most the night at home after being there – which I can only contribute to the food??

My order was fish of the day which I asked for pan fried with salad and fries. It came, completely overcooked, with bones x 4 and about a dozen scales, not to mention steamed soggy veges (which I hadn’t asked for) and soggy hot chips… really disappointed.

My partners ribs were all bones in a sauce, with hardly a scratch of meat on them. Our calamari, was fresh and well presented, there was enough of it to share for our entree, but lacked flavour/seasoning, so very boring really.

The fried fish and chips and the lamb burger were fine, nothing to write home about, servings large, so it was good value. And I can’t fault the lemon tart for dessert, the drinks, wines/beers etc were all well priced which impressed me for “Matakana pricing”.

I’m a local and I’d love to say I’ll be back, but I really can’t justify it at $50 a head we spent yesterday and a poor result.

SORRY STABLES, but you are off the list.

I went earlier this year and to be fair it had only just opened. The decor has not changed from the old place, and I am thankful for that. Love those fireplaces. Wasn’t “allowed” to sit outside though, diners had to sit inside, while drinkers were allowed outside. Was very unimpressed with the youngest waitress who loitered in the middle of the dining area chewing on her order book. Just such an unappealing thing to see when you are about to eat. The meal was good. I’ll return next time I’m in the area, and I hope they’ll be able to get 4 stars from me once they’ve had time to settle in.

We took an visitor from the US without having been since it reopened under new owners with a new name. Bit of a risk, but it paid off. We have only been once, so not much point in commenting on individual dishes on such limited experience. Suffice it to say, we will be going back to try more because we loved it. There was nothing to grumble about. Gorgeous food, gorgeous surroundings, gorgeous staff. What more could one ask, on one’s doorstep? Another plus for Matakana.
