Best meal in town.Had a couple of steaks in Taupo in different places I have never had a good one yet. Till last Friday night its the best steak I have had in a long time. The wife had a lamb rack so much flavour and tender. I have heard a few people comment on the food all good beer a good price staff nice what more would you want. I will be back.

Arrived hungry and we were very impressed.

Friendly greeting and service was good throughout.

The steaks were as good as I’ve had anywhere – melt in the mouth and cooked beautifully. Presentation was excellent.

Had to try the desert after the great main and wasn’t disappointed, the raspberry brulee was a great way to finish.

Next time I’m in Taupo I will be heading here again.

What can I say … my table and I were absolutely blown away by the rudeness of the waitress and how unaccomodating and unsympathetic she was – she was a tall brunette with an English accent.
First of all we ordered steak meals where ALL of out potatoes came out parcially raw. When this was brought to her attention she argued back instead saying ‘these are a waxy potato’ (we are all very away of the difference between waxy and RAW!) and grumpily took them away and brought us more – slightly more cooked but still some inedible. No apology.
When we went to pay she was sullen and rude, and when I exclaimed I had to pay $12 for my malibu and pineapple she said nothing. I work in a high end cocktail lounge and where everything is premium quality and we don’t even charge NEAR that price for one! Coming from the hospo industry this woman did everything wrong and we have already spread the word to avoid this place. It was APPALLING and they won’t last long if they keep up like this.

Great restaurant and nice atmosphere.. Steaks are fantastic and service is very good. Went there for a quick dinner, ended up being there for 5 hours…

We were on holidays with 11 people from Australia and were staying in Taupo. We were told about this fantastic place to eat at the Steak and Ale. I called up quite late with a booking for 11 people and were welcomed with open arms for the booking. We arrived and at first I thought that it was going to be a cramped little place but I didn’t want to judge to quickly. We were promptly greeted and shown to our table. The friendly waitress took our drink order and gave us the menu. I asked the waitress for her opinion on a nice bottle of white wine, she had quite a knowledge of the wine menu (lucky ) Our drinks arrived promptly and then our meal orders taken. When our entree arrived we were all in awe of the presentation and then the first mouthful , all I could hear is the delight from all of the table. Drinks were served fast and the table cleared promptly. Next were the main meals. We had ordered everything from the fish to pasta to meat. We were awaiting the meals to come for we were impressed by the first course. Well we were not disappointed. The presentation of the meals and the flavour that came from each meal was outstanding. And yes I had tried all the other meals for you had to taste to believe how delicious there were. Next was dessert and I could not go past this. Well I was not disappointed the crunch of the caramel and sweetness of the brulee. My husband and I were asking the waitress on some of the ingredients and she was more than accommodating to answer. We later found out that she was the owner which we found impressive that she was on the floor serving. All I can say is if you are visiting Taupo please take the time and visit Steak and Ale . Well done.

Just got home from one of the most terrible service experiences we have had in Taupo. Firstly – waitress didn’t know what was included with each dish. Then the vegetarian pasta dish (I know, but I was with 2 steak eaters) came out with meat in it, which I only discovered 5 minutes into my meal. Their bar tender knew more about the food than the waitress. Then my husband ordered a second beer (well they’d finished their steaks by the time my second pasta came out) and the beer never turned up. They even have a sign saying ‘please don’t try to adapt our menu, as a refusal may offend’. There was no apologies for any of their mistakes. Overall – expensive beer, vegetarians shouldn’t bother, and if you have allergies I pity you trying to ‘adapt’ the menu, don’t visit if you want good service.

OMG!!!! What can I say??? wonderful, amazing, awesome, delightful, welcoming the list goes on! I had a steak, cooked perfectly, my friend had a salad, fresh and wonderful. Drinks nicely presented and the dessert was very satisfying! Service was amazing. I love this restaurant

O my where do we start??? Firstly we went there four months ago were seated and nobody came and saw us for 25min so we walked out and last weekend we thought well we will try them again!!!! But upon being seated the girl got the drink order wrong twice and then my husband wanted steak,chips and salad on one plate which we thought would be easy as it was a steak bar and we were told no because she couldnt change anything the menu was not a set menu so again we walked out shame on you guys we were prepared to give you another go and again just blown away by the rudeness i worked in hospo for 15 years and there is such thing as being able to satisfy the customer which you couldnt do!!!!
