Steak @ Customs House is centrally located in the heart of Timaru within the historic Customs House building. The steakhouse style of dining is a perfect complement to the landmark building’s unique architecture and ambience.
Whilst specialising in top quality food, predominantly steak, a variety of other options are available ranging from rack of lamb to confit of duck, plus there is an excellent choice of wines to match.
There are over 90 labels on the winelist, which is overseen by Brent Rands, the sommelier who also compiles the award-wining wine list for the sister restaurant Gantleys in Queenstown.
Also offering the perfect place for that special occasion or business dinner, is private dining room catering up to 18 people. Plus the courtyard is a great place for pre-dinner drinks.
As well as À la carte dining, Steak at Customshouse welcome enquiries for private functions, wedding dinners, business meetings.
They’re more than happy to provide menus to suit your requirements. The restaurant can also be hired for working breakfasts or lunches by prior arrangement.

The menu always has something different on it each time we come, but they retain the favorites.
The ambiance of the restaurant is perfect.
In my opinion this is by far best restaurant in town and is slightly cheaper than other leading Timaru restaurants for a better meal & experience.

The wine selection is excellent and the waiter actually knows what he is talking about.
Food is fab – Duck rolls for the entree are amazing although could do with a little more duck. Unfortunatly no duck confit on the main menu as I was hoping.
For the main I had the fish, maybe a tad too much fish on the plate if thats possible!

Visited this establishment on the 3rd of March 2010. It was previously an Italian themed restaurant.
The food back then was well presented and carefully cooked.
Since changing hands and now a Steak house with claimed accolades from past recent efforts I decided since it was our wedding anniversary to eat out and the Steak house it was.
Ordered the Garlic bread which I was told is also supplied to the Ale House.
The bread was fine with a good dollop of garlic better infused in it.
However the signature dish Eye fillet steak was utterly disappointing.
I called the Waiter over and mentioned that the steak was ordered medium rare which according to the supplied advertising blurb on the menu would present with a mild red centre.
The waiter agreed with me that the steak was overdone and possibly had been left in the oven too long.
He went into the kitchen to discuss this with the Chef and eventually came back and confirmed the Chef agreed, The Waiter offered to replace the steak. By this time there was no way I wanted another steak so we left it at that.
The desert was of a good standard
and could not be faulted.
However I am focused on the main course which is the main cost factor.
When settling the account there was no offer of any reduction in the price of the meal which was not of acceptable standard by their acknowledgement. Hence I rate the Steak house as overrated and seriously lacking in customer relationship and will not be back.

Very disappointed and disgusted that the owner would not implement such a thing – it should be mandatory. Not impressed.
