We selected the Black Steer Restaurant for our End of Year Christmas Dinner. We were disappointed right from the start as we learnt it was a BYO wine and beer – buggar, I was looking forward to a cold beer but had to settle for a very pricey fizzy drink. Unfortunately it continued down hill from there. We asked for our steaks to be cooked medium-well (they are a Steakhouse – surely they can’t get this wrong) Both steaks were cooked very well done. The salad wasn’t anything special – something I could’ve easily made at home. The chips were good. Don’t try the spare ribs as my workmate did not enjoy them at all. The atmosphere was poor as we were pushed out into a little side room because the main dining room was booked for a large group. We wont be returning back to the Black Steer Restaurant and my advice would be to go somewhere else.

Word of caution: After posting my comments the owners phone me and verbally attacked me about my comments. If you are posting, leave it for a few days.

Very good resturant , food was excellent interactive dinning was a good change to the way we convensionally eat out we had a 40 person function there only hassles we had was that we didnt choose a set menu so dinner was a bit late but bloody awsome. Service with a smile. Tip if taking a large number of persons there choose a set menu.

Having recently dined at STONZE Restaurant for the first time, I have to admit that the meal was wonderful. The service was amazing, and the atmosphere of this quaint little restaurant took my breath away. Your meal is served to you on a 400 degree volcanic stone making the experience quite unique. I didn’t realize that you had to cook your own meat, but… nobody knows better than me exactly how I like my steak cooked! I had to laugh about this one, if my steak was overcooked I couldn’t complain to the chef, because I was the chef! The sides looked appealing, and tasted even better, desert was delish, and my kids thoroughly enjoy their night. If you are in Wanganui and would love to dine out check this place out, you might be surprised, I was. You can also stay there if you want, its part of a motel. Alma Motel & Stonze. Well worth the journey.
