There is a certain effervescence and laughter that bubbles up from the heart of this cafe. Come here to revel in the joys of good food and outstanding coffee.

Strawberry Bakehouse is the delicious little cafe that opened in mid 2010, and which passionate business owner Kara Healey brought to public attention over the debate about trademarks over their old name: House of Brown Sugar, back in 2011.

Don’t let the small look of this cafe turn you off pushing open the door and taking a look at the fabulous display of food. Small in size but not small in portion size with huge slices and huge ginger gems. Personally I haven’t been able to get past the ginger gems and have taken anyone I can get to go and enjoy one with me. Lots of savoury options as well with a wide variety of brunch and lunch options. Seek this cafe out and enjoy its friendly atmosphere.

I regularly go to this unique wee cafe, which is handily close to my office. Their slices are delicious and unbelievably generous – often nice to share between two. Fabulous coffee, superb service. And great to see they weren’t deterred by the nasty North Islanders, but just kept on rolling in their own unique, super classy way. Love you guys!

Delicious food, exquisite coffee….. Hidden away in the corner of a car park you will find this quirky little gem of Nelson. Service is always top notch. This little place serves the biggest slices ever!! Highly recommend Strawberry or Raspberry Riot! Fantastic service and breakfast to die for!!

Why are you people writing glowing reviews? Don’t you realise that this place only seats four people, and I’m already having trouble finding space on a Saturday morning! You should be writing terrible reviews and putting people off going there, ’cause you know that once they’ve tasted the best coffee and muffins in Nelson they are just going to keep coming back.

Good news everyone. Although it is hard to find in these parts, the wonderful folk of The House of Brown Sugar (or THOBS as it is called locally) have Bachelor Chow on the menu. I cackled with glee as I sat down for a bowl of my favorite “now with flavor” treat. Topped off with bottomless refills of Slurm, you couldn’t ask for a nicer mid morning dining experience. Keep in mind, the staff prefer used books instead of tips. I give THOBS a healthy 17 stars.

What a little gem – food, coffee and staff top notch – don’t miss them when in Nelson.
It’s great to get a perfectly made coffee and we just couldnt resist those wonderful home baked goodies. The staff were busy with some catering about to be delivered – lucky Nelson to have them there for all your home entertaining requirements. We went back for breakfast the next day and weren’t disappointed – every thing cooked to perfection!
