Ok my partner and I have been here twice just to make sure the first time wasnt a fluke. And nope it wasn’t the desserts are to die for but can be a tad expensive. Will be working our way through that two page dessert menu before the end of 2012 :)

Came here for desert and hot chocolates for my wife’s birthday. The service was fast and friendly even though the place was packed. I ordered the lack forest tower, it was a well constructed clever dish, that had multiple layers to enjoy. Best desert I’ve had at a restaurant.

Service is a bit slow

But the desserts themselves are good, if not a bit big.

Very rich desserts, hard to eat the whole lot. But very nicely crafted

Came here for my birthday last week. The place was very quiet with two tables occupied and we were seated promptly, but it took just over 20 minutes for one of the wait staff to bring us our menus – probably because the 4 of them were having a merry old yak behind the counter. The waitress we did eventually get looked bored, uninterested as she took our orders. Our mains took an hour and 20 minutes to reach us. I ordered the salmon (overcooked) two at our table asked for
medium rare steaks, and received well done! Garlic bread was awful too. However, a different waitress took our dessert orders, and they were delivered efficiently and they looked and tasted amazing. I really recommend going for the desserts and possibly having your meals elsewhere prior. The cleanliness of the place also let the restaurant down. The carpet was revolting, I was seated on top of mashed potato and tomato relish? Others at our table had similar reports!

We arrived one Friday night to celebrate a birthday. Agreeably the desserts are pricey but are well worth it! There was a wait for the desserts but good company made it worthwhile. I ordered the chocolate tower I think it was called, the servings are generous and sadly I was unable to finish it. Inside was quite warm, a welcomed relief from the cold Wellington weather. I ordered a lemon, lime and bitters from here which was very disappointing with too much bitters. I have visited here a few times and will definitely be returning.

Hi there, I’m so glad I chose to ignore the negative comments which have been placed about this restaurant.
I went here for my birthday lunch on Sunday. Within our party were two vegetarians, one gluten free and one 7 year old. We were catered for excellently.
The service was prompt, polite and intelligent.
The food was delicious and well presented.
We thought the decor was jolly good fun.
Thank you Strawberry Fare we will be back!

Went there last night for my boyfriend’s birthday. We both enjoyed it, but very pricey, the waitress that served us did a good job :) There were 4 on the floor and saw that she was the only working and the rest were just yakking.. not a good look.

Went to strawberry fair despite some of e negative comments. Went for dessert only as this is primarily what strawberry fair caters for. The staff were polite and efficient even though they were short staffed. Ordered our dessert and didn’t have to wait long to get it. Tiramitsu was delicious and the banofi pie from the sample I had was supreme. Would highly recommend for dessert following a nice night out

Nothing ventured, nothing gained. Read the last two reviews, and so went for breakfast with our Spreets voucher with some understandable trepidation!

And whilst the decor is indeed decidely tired and in need of refurbishment, we were pleasantly surprised, finding the food, the coffee and the service was up to scratch!

my partner and I went here for brunch with a spreets voucher. It was the worst brunch I have had for years. The big breakfast was cheap cheap cheap. frozen hashbrowns from a packet, overcooked eggs, mushrooms soggy and slimy. Our rashers were cooked to a cinder and my corn fritters had a few dollops of corn in the batter mix with salsa from a jar ( supermarket) poured down one side. No sour cream no other garnishes. We only ate a bout a quater each and felt sick all day.

My Partner and i went here yesterday for brunch with a spreets voucher. I wasn’t expecting much as i believe Strawberry Fare has had its day. It was absolutely disgusting!!!!! I had the salmon and potato cakes with poached eggs. The potato cakes were horrible. I felt sick after the second bite. The poached eggs were no better. If a restaurant cant get an egg right its really saying something. The service was again disgraceful, hearing the waitress mock our table after i asked for a pot of tea. This place should be shut down, its a real blemish to the wellington restaurant scene.

My partner and I went here last night for our anniversary. We’d been out for dinner before hand and were only there for dessert.

It was pretty packed when we arrived (about 9.30 on a saturday night)but we’d booked so though it’d be fine. We were told that the table we booked had been taken and another one would have to do… We were seated by the wall right next to a HUUUUUGE dining group who were really loud. It wasn’t a very good table and we were a bit disapointed.

While waiting to be served I noticed that the carpet was filthy, with rubbish everywhere. Given it was a busy saturday night this was somewhat understandable.. Still, I sort of got the feeling that we were dining in McDonalds. It’s a shame because it could be a really nice place if it was given a lick of paint, a carpet clean and if the tacky paintings were taken off the walls.

The service was generally pretty good apart from the trouble with the table. We were well looked after and our waitress was polite and friendly.

My partner ordered the chocolate brownie and I ordered the Banaffi pie. The portions were MASSIVE. I only managed half of mine and had to get the rest takeaway. I didn’t try the chocolate brownie but my partner said it was delicious. My pie was pretty amazing, the caramel was creamy and thick and the bananas were fresh and sweet. It was all topped off with heaps of whipped cream.MMMMMMmmmmmmmmm…

I’ve given 3 stars because the food was quite yummy but the decor really lets the place down.

Went here last night as we had some voucher’s from 1-day, and it’s my favorite place for dessert.

The dessert’s were amazing as always, I had the chocolate maddnes and my partner had torte. The chips and garlic bread were also amazing. On the low side our mains were not what we had expected (had chicken breast), more because we are not fans of white beans and tomato’s. The chicken its self was amazing though, cooked perfectly in my opinion.

Will definitely go back though, although i will get the filo, as its amazing. Also would love to try their brunch.

First time i had ever been here.
We got a cute little table by the window, staff were mixed 2 were very nice one was a bit of a cow.
Food was OK partner had chicken and mushroom pasta which was the bomb i had chicken, cranberry and brie filo which i feel was far to rich, if you like crunchy chips then your in luck because they were way over cooked.
Didn’t get to have desert as the main took at least a hour to come out and people who came in after us were served there food at the same time as us.
Would go back (because i need to try the dessert) but it is over priced and a bit of a wait

Came here for a work do. Some of the worst service I’ve ever received. Seven staff stood behind the counter having a wonderful chat. We sat in the restaurant doing nothing. Eating was at the top of the list of things we weren’t doing. Being served was a very close second.

Their dessert, when it arrived 105 minutes after we sat, was great. The other food – average.

2 hours for an entree and a main is too long.

The entree of Watercress and Potato soup was lovely, but the toasted ciabatta was large but stale. The bread and dips was an overly generous helping and would easily feed the whole table.

The deserts were amazing, the Banoffee Pie and Choc/Rasp Drench cake both went down like a treat.

The staff were nice and knowledgeable.

Very little has changed at Strawberry Fare over the years; this is both a good and bad thing. The main meals on offer are average and unimaginative – dessert is obviously still the biggest drawcard here. With 23 options to choose from, the sweet-toothed are well catered for. There is practically nothing sweet available in smaller portions, so plan your meal carefully if you want to have room for dessert after your main course. Most of our group’s desserts arrived with seemingly identical garnishes, making initial identification tricky but the resulting flavours were extremely decadent. There’s a fine line between rich and sickly. Our service was better this time (we’ve had some shocking experiences there in the past), but the decor is looking very tired and it’s never a good idea to seat a large group around a long line of round tables.

As a child I had visited the Strawberry fare in Christchurch and was immediately smitten. Now grown & married we decided to try the Wellington version. We went as a group of 6. I was once again smitten by the gorgeous food. The Mains are amazing. I had the Chicken with Asparagus and cheamy sauce. I have never had such a nice Chicken dish. So far so good however my patience was beginning to ware thin with the waitresses. They stood behind the Bar (not all of these girls were 18), with their arms crossed staring at us all as if we were a zoo spectacle. We all finished our Mains and my Sister in Law decided she would like to take the left overs of her pasta home. We sat there and sat there and sat there having stacked our own plates and drank all of what was left in our glasses we were beginning to get rather exasperated. When we were finally served, my Sister in Law asked for her pasta to be put in a dogie bag. Well I have never ever had such rudeness in my life. She came back with the Pasta on a travel plate and slammed it onto the table by my Sister in Laws arm. And I mean SLAMMED it, the pasta came off the plate. Not even an apologie was to be had from this girl, nothing.

We decided to stay for desert since we were already here. My husband asked for a Stella artois, (a rather expensive beer when being brought as a single bottle from a restaurant). He received Tui but was charged for a Stella artois. When he asked the waitress she simply said there had been a mix up and nothing could be done. He was Livid. You should never come between a man and his beer.

The Deserts were fantastic. The style of how they were presented was amazing. We all enjoyed the food. The deserts were large and very rich but thats what all chocolate lovers die for. But once again the same debar-cal was to be had from the waitresses.

The only thing going for this restaurant is the food. The service was dismal. We won’t be going back and that is sad when the food is of such a high standard.

It’s been a while since I’ve eaten here as I live in Australia now but I used to love going to Strawberry Fare – the most delicious desserts you can imagine, and all presented so well! The meals were also great, and brunch was excellent but I always went back for the desserts!

i’m not a fan of dessert but my partner is, so it’s a good place to strike a balance. their light meals are substantial, could be main meal in itself. desserts are huge, so great place to go after a small light meal.

Service was as fantastic as the decor was odd (in a pleasant way). The presentation of meals made them almost too good to eat. Would highly recommend, even if just for dessert.

Our party of six enjoyed a great night here…three courses, all well spaced, the staff were friendly and obliging (even though one was sour-faced for some reason she was still helpful when asked).

The food was above average (as always) and the desserts are simply out of this world…after-all this restaurant is all about the desserts. This is now my third visit and each time I attempt to tackle a jaffa tower and each time it beats me, so no complaining about the portion size!

Well, what an experience. I,ve been here 2 or 3 times before but after this, never again. Service was awful. At one point they had a full restaurant and all eight staff standing on top of each other behind the small counter – watching. Smiling seems to have gone out of fashion here as does being civil to your customers. I will say the food was, as always, good. Of course it took over 2 hrs to be dished up garlic bread, the main and dessert, but of course we were more interesting to watch than serve. Stay away.

It’s always a fun place to go if you have a major sweet tooth, however I’ve been there a couple of times now and just found the desserts too sugary, too huge and just a bit of an overload. Subtlety could be suggested. Service from one waitress not too good at all, however another one on at the time was friendly and helpful.

yum yum yum.. didn’t bother with the main meals so cant comment on those but the deserts were delicious. Dined with a group of 6 others who all chose something different so got to try (pinched!!) other deserts while trying to scoff down a jaffa tower before the others had a chance to steal it. Definitely a special ‘treat’ restaurant.

Not very impressive overall. Don’t like the atmosphere, bright lights and large busy room. Service OK, desserts huge, sugary and a bit gross. Left after eating about a third of the dessert, and felt sick. Hope not to be tempted to go again!
