I have dined several times at Sukhothai when in Timaru on business, each time alone. Although there is invariably quite a large number of diners, I have never had to wait very long for my order to be taken or to be served my meal. This is important to a lone diner. The authentic Thai food is plentiful, of excellent quality and the presentation is immaculate. I have always found the owner and staff to be efficient and warm.

My latest visit was during an election campaign and I thought it rather strange that a quality dining establishment would cheapen itself by displaying, very prominently at the entrance and at reception, advertising material for a parliamentary candidate. I would have thought most of the customers visit for a relaxing meal and don’t want to have politicians in their faces during a period when they are seeing nothing else in the newspapers, on TV and on every street corner. It didn’t detract from the quality of the food, but it did influence the atmosphere, for me at least. Except for that, I would give it 5 stars.

This place is good the food is excellent

but

this is dependant on you getting a table and finally getting served, they need more staff on you wait ages for your food, so dont go if your starving or in a hurry

I can’t rate this place highly enough, most of the food in South Canterbury is bland boring and the same as everywhere else. Sukhothai stands out from the crowd, they do a really good $10 lunch which includes soup and a main, there is nothing to match that at this quality in Timaru. The service is very good. They always make sure that people get food that is not to spicy for them but if you like it Thai hot then no problem, there are many other Asian style restaurants in Timaru, but none of them are worth a visit. again the best place in Timaru to eat bar none.
