I had the buffet dinner.. enjoyed the food alot of variety, the service was great had drinks topped up straight away and dirty plates taken away until restaurant got full but still was very good service better than most places. All in all good night good food, not the best but A-OK. Came out satisfied and full.

Two words. YUMMY FOOD. We dined in and had a banquet for my brothers 19th Birthday and thoroughly enjoyed the evening. Always was a frequent customer but this was my first time dining in. It is a completely different experience compared to the other restaurants in city which never seems to change. With New world right across the street means I can go do my shopping and come back to a absoulte delicous wonton soup. See you next time

This is one of my favourite places to go before a night out. The food is very good and the portions are very generous compared to the price. This place has in my opinion the best Sweet n Sour pork in whangarei and the wontons are scrumptious too. Dined with 3 other people and also had drinks as well, was very well priced and was completely satisfied

Many of the comments below say the owner is rude and the service is poor. How true this is. I wished I had come to this site first and done some research. And I wished I had never set foot in this place and never will again. It was all bad right from the start. Even the booking over the phone was a put off. Over the phone the owner went on and on about how he is the best in town and all the other places are “Just Shit”. I was quite taken back at his rudeness and total disrespect for other businesses. But I thought, Oh Well as long as he is as good as he cracks himself up to be, it will be OK. No Chance! He shouts all night, you can here him all over the restaurant and he is very abrupt. The service was really poor and the meal was yuck.I will never go to this place again because of the staff and also because they serve Sharks Fin Soup.I did not know this until I went there. OK, each to their own. But I will not support any restaurant on principle that sells it. Never Again!

Heard good things about this place and finally had the opportunity to try this place when some friends came to visit me. Tai Tong is one of those places where you have to try at least once and from the dinner experience we tried today, it won’t be the last. We ordered the banquet for 4 people and loved each course. I had never tried shark fin soup and was delighted that I chose to have it today. I absoultely love the soup I was served and will be back at the next chance I get!!!

I eat the sunday buffet with my family at least once a month and always leave with a full belly. I always see a huge range of desserts and yummy chinese food to gobble up. Decor is quite vintage and atmosphere is good. Quite popular on sundays and like seeing friends eating here as well. Looking forward to this sunday.

Ate here with friends today and was pleasantly suprised after eating here.
Food is authetic chinese with a big range of dishes on the menu, inexpensive and delicious. Will definately get the wonton soup from takeaway again

Agree with the below ratings – worst Chinese restaurant ever. Tried their buffet on a Sunday night, the place was filthy and service was nonexistent. “Fresh” oysters tasted like rubber, and the dessert cabinet was a joke. They can do better just go across the road and get some frozen desserts from New World. It was a nightmare, would not go back there again!

The worst and I mean worst chinese food ever ordered. It was an insult to dish us up this unedible slop. We ended up walking out after having words with the rudest owner you could ever meet. He reminds me of a chinese Basil Faulty.

He tells me he’s been in business for 20 years…..well judging by the fact that there were only 3 other victims seated in a dirty restuarant – I can gurantee you that he wont be around in another 20 years.

Come on Whangarei – there must be a better chinese to eat at than this.

The only positive thing I can say is that it would be a great place to take your pet pig

Must be the worst Chinese restaurant I have ever been to, stood waiting to get seated, service unfriendly at door, place actually smelt a bit too, travelling from Paihia to Auckland so we decided to tough it out, service didn’t get any better but it has to rate above the food quality, all our meals were average to poor, one of our party ordered the duck, it was a plate of duck fat and skin, we told them, the owner came over poked around, said it was traditional, yeah right! got the impression even he was surprised but defended his position to the end, don’t recommend at all must be better places Chinese places in Whangarei, I’d be surprised if there was worse and still in business. I have to say this restaurant exceeded my expectations in some areas and met them in others. I visited on a Tuesday and the place was empty. The waiter wasn’t overly friendly or welcoming which gave a poor first impression. The decor of the place felt very retro i.e. it was how I remembered Chinese restaurants from 30 years ago however it was in great condition and was spotlessly clean – a major plus in my books. I ordered a fairly safe meal of sizzling platter of steak in pepper sauce. The steak was very tender, the sauce very tasty and the helping very generous so no complaints there. I felt the price was pretty average for the market it catered for. I’d eat there again but wouldn’t drive out of my way to get to it.

I and my family and friends have eaten at this restaurant a few times. The service is poor and the Manager is quite rude to customers. We had a banquet meal and by the time the last dishes arrived the plates were just being dumped on the table and dirty dishes were not being taken away. I personally don’t recommend this restaurant to anyone. Most times we have been invited to birthday dinners and so we have to go. The food is OK but the presentation leaves a lot to be desired. They advertise karaoke but restrict the use till after you have finished eating, which is usually late in the evening.

The food was excellent in quality and presentation; superb flavours and richness of oriental cuisine. Service – couldn’t be faulted> This is a Chinese restaurant in a New Zealand provincial small town and offers everything one would expect from an up-market operation in any major world city – and I’ve been to most of them! And the prices are very competitive with other restaurants in the same market
