I’ve come to expect so little of restaurant level Indian food, whether in NZ or beyond. As much as Tandoori Palace Ilam doesn’t thrill, it hasn’t exactly disappointed, as much as that is to damn it with faint praise. I’ve eaten here on several occasions merely because of proximity and evening laziness, and the best I can say that is that it offers an average portrayal of the dishes they offer, even as their sugary sweet and unpalatable naan says entirely too much about the dumbed down orientation of Indian restaurant food. The vegetarian dishes from the greatest vegetarian cuisine on the planet are very limited and can be very disappointing. Simply put, this remains a place not for the connoisseur of Indian cuisine, but for those drawn to the safe, rich, creamy Punjabi food most Indian restaurants exclusively present to kiwi diners. So what’s not to love, except that other local restaurants do it somewhat better?

Lovely décor and intimate atmosphere. Staff were lovely and friendly, and the wait for our food wasn’t too long. The entrées were delicious, as so were the curries, although a little more spicy than I would have liked.

Went here with my boyfriend the other night. It was quite pleasant, the atmosphere was nice and intimate. We ordered the mild butter chicken and tikka masala but we both found that the curries were both too spicy for our liking. But we loved how the chicken was marinated and it tasted great. If it was a little bit less spicy it would have been an amazing meal :)

The curry club had an evening meal here and it was OK.

Couple of issues were that they didn’t have Kingfisher Strong, a couple of the meals were delivered wrong and they didn’t ask how spicy you wanted it.

The Entrées and Naan were very pleasant, and the staff friendly but I would have to say that there is better around Christchurch to enjoy.

Had the BEST INDIAN from here tonight! WOW! The naan was cooked from dough when we ordered the Butter Chicken was delicious and we also tried Chicken Bhona which was something new and fantastic. Will never forget this experience.
