To many people Terroir is an elusive and romantic French term, frequently used to describe the inherent characters of soil, climate and culture, as reflected in a wine or the food from a particular vineyard or region. At Craggy Range the restaurant is called “Terrôir”

It is truly one of the lovliest settings with the mountains, lake and rural views AND the inside space is gorgeous with its fireplaces and old beams and rush seated chairs…. this part is great. But the stuffy service has no place in our NZ culture I’m afraid. Several attempts from ourselves to engage with the waiter failed. Sure, they are very polite but there is no interest in the diner or friendliness on offer. They need to be able to loosen up. We are no strangers to fine dining (and this place is a Bistro not supposed to be formal!) so it’s not as if we have no idea! Big black mark for the wine matches to each course not being priced on the menu. My husband went with his wine match only to find out when paying the bill that it was $40 for one glass. More than his main! If you’re charging this kind of price it would be nice to publish it. Sure we could have cross referenced it with the wine list but really shouldn’t have to. My match was $12 – what a difference. And the food? Average. We had the venison and the lamb and found both a bit bland with no layering of flavour. We had been to Vidal’s the night before and couldn’t help but compare it – Vidal’s wins out hands down. And one more thing – why don’t some of these places start offering Lunch menus instead of Dinner menus at lunchtime? Smaller portions, more rustic options and lighter style meals? Not so long ago it was possible to go to lunch and eat accordingly – now like the HUGE muffins you see in most cafes the trend is for these full on meals – not so healthy for either waistline or wallet. Shape up guys!

I also worked in the kitchen briefly, and can vouch for the cleanliness of the place and friendly staff =)
