This is a very pleasant restaurant to go to, with the service almost being over efficient, the food was excellent, but the menu was very limited it its choices, which was disappointing. But overall it was a great place to go.

Though the restuarant itself is lovey and the service fairly good, the amount of time we all had to wait for our dishes was unacceptable. Was there for lunch and as most people have only as hour for lunch it’s not at all good to have to wait nearly an hour for the food to arrive. Was not impressed by this. Evening meals I can understand but not lunch meals.

This restaurant is a welcome addition to the dining options in Gore. As a regular business visitor I dined alone in the early evening and was immediately impressed by the striking decor, furnishings and the friendly reception. I chose only one course from the impressive, tempting menu and had to wait only a very reasonable 20 minutes for my meal to appear. The dish was attractively presented and proved to be delicious – a grilled lamb rump cooked to perfection and served, thickly sliced over a tartlet of caramelised onion. The crumbed and deep fried sweetbreads made for an unusual combination which worked perfectly, along with a tasty but not overdone sauce.
An amusing sidelight that didn’t upset me personally, but which was a reminder that grand decor cannot hide the fact that Gore is down-to-earth Heartland New Zealand: as the very pleasant young waitress removed my main course dishes, she asked “Are y’after any desserts or coffees?”

Went there on a very busy night. Found the wait staff, although young, to be extremly pleasant and well informed. I found the obviously impressive decor to be matched by the menu and everything our party ordered more than met expectations. A highlight was the carefully chosen but reasonably priced winelist. All in all a great night and excellent value for money

My hubby & I took my elderly mother to Thomas Green on Waitangi Day Monday for lunch. The service was excellent and the food was absolutely delicious!!!! My mother commented that the Summer Pudding dessert she had was one of the most delicious puddings she had ever had anywhere. Highly recommend the Thomas Green for lunch or evening meal.

A nice, over-capitalised piece of real estate situated in Gore. The interior decorating is wonderfully done. Yet the Mataura Licensing Trust just can’t seem to get its act together when it comes to service. Don’t mistake the pretentious facade of class and culture that this establishment oozes; it is just pub serving pub meals accompanied with substandard service, and lacks any culture it purports to have. In short it is Howl at the Moon II.

I have been to The Thomas Green 3 times since it has been opened. My girlfriend and I love the stylish interior, the bathrooms have always been sparkling clean, and the other fixtures and fittings are all high quality. It is a real asset to Gore. We have however had mixed reviews of the 3 meals we have received. The first time we went was for dessert, where we ordered “fondue for two” which was nice. We were however seated in a very high traffic area with waiters walking past every minute or so, even though there were lots of spare tables in better locations. The second time we were seated in a better more private area and I ordered a Salmon dish which was fine, however my girlfriend was not happy with the mussel dish she received. It was small and there was only a tiny piece of bread which left us with 1 cup of sauce in the bottom of the dish that we couldn’t soak up to drink/eat. (we had no spoon delivered with the bowl)
The last visit however was my worst experience. Seated back at our high-traffic table, I ordered the Rib-eye with mushroom sauce and asked for it to be cooked “medium”. About 35mins later we received our dinner and initial thoughts were that it looked great. The mushrooms sauce was delicious and then I started on the meat. It was a few bites in that I decided I had not received a “medium” steak. The extremely rare steak was a real experience for myself and I will think twice before ordering it again – I would have sent it back, however with time restrictions I could not afford the extra time. These teething problems are always to be expected in a new business like this however so I will give them another go in the future, however maybe I’ll order a “well-done” this time around! :p

This restaurant has been beautifully decorated and has a lovely atmosphere. The food was delicious unfortunately the staff could do with more training in terms of service. We waited an hour for our meal after ordering it. We had to ask for the bread we ordered to be brought to our table an hour after ordering. Desert plates were not cleared away before coffee was brought to our table and we had to ask for the last person at the table to be served coffee, they had run out of cups and didn’t bother to come back.
I think this is a great place for Gore and will go back but do hope the staff will get some training in table service and that the food will appear faster next time.
