Sitting pretty on the corner of Jellicoe Street and Memorial Square in the centre of Martinborough, Tui’s Place, a cute Cafe, Bar & Pizza place, looks across Martinborough’s town square, inhabiting the town’s most historic retail establishment, circa 1880.
You’ll find a humourous piece of history accompanies Tui’s building, when by 1923 the building had become a grocery store, and nails were reversed up through the window ledges (and are still in place!) because, as The Martinborough Star records, “men would sit on the window ledges enjoying the afternoon sun and ladies were subsequently put off walking along there. Whilst back in the 1950s, for two and sixpence you could buy yourself some ham or a tin of Nescafe, in its current glory, you can experience delicious pizza underneath your ham, and an upmarket espresso, not ‘instant’ coffee, in the venue’s fabulous new incarnation as Tui’s Place.
