A couple of weekends ago, whilst shopping at Sylvia Park, we decided to go to Umi for lunch. We had never dined there before so decided to give it a try. All four of us decided to have the lunch box, as we always do when we’re having Japanese for lunch, and it’s on offer.
To be quite blunt, Umi had one of the worst lunch boxes we’ve ever had. The presentation was absolutely terrible!! It looked like the food was thrown into the bento boxes! The amount of food was really small compared to what is normally in those boxes and it looked like they tried to spread all the food out to make it look like a decent meal. There were only 4 small strips of teriyaki chicken as the main and equates to probably only a third of what is normally served. Worse yet, the food tasted as bad as it looked! The soup was tepid, at best. The chicken was also served warm instead of hot and tasted like it was smothered in bottled teriyaki sauce.
We basically left feeling hungry and ripped off. We will not be returning to Umi again because, quite frankly, they don’t deserve to have customers.

I and my partner had a lunch there by using one of those voucher deal. I had $20 something worth combination katsu(?) set and my partner had chicken yakisoba(?). The combination Katsu should worth $20 something but it looked and taste like straight away from the supermarket freezer. The staff leaded us to a table which had many food being dropped under the table from the previous customers even there were clean tables around. I had to ask her if we could move to a clean table. My experience was pretty bad but my partner said it was ok. Voucher is a great way to promo their business but in this case, it didn’t work out well. I don’t think I will go there again.
The only good thing is all the girls working there are pretty.

My companion and I were quickly seated as booked ahead.
My companion order the Chicken teriyaki & tempura dinner meal = dried chicken undistinguished sauce, messy presentation all over the hotplate.
I got the Japanese steak dinner, was nothing special, lacked presentation, under-seasoned with no special taste at all.
Miso soup had no tofu, or seaweed, or spring onion, tasted bland. The waiter brought the meats out first, then rice a minute later, then miso again a minute later, and totally FORGOT to bring salad and we had to remind them.
On top of that, water glasses were not clean, and the water tasted foul. Waiters were not very experienced, and did not make you feel very welcomed. The rice was probably the only thing that was acceptable considering dinner meal prices were $19.00+.
Will not be returning to Umi Japanese Restaurant unless they really shape up their food standards, presentation, and service.

Food was great. Service was a tiny bit too fast. But when the food is awesome, and well presented, you don’t worry too much.
Its odd that this nice restaurant is in the middle of a blank mall, but it was lovely.

Food was great but the waitress didn’t have enough English to understand the order – we were a group and wanted to enjoy shared entrees followed by shared meals but the food all descended upon us within 10 minutes – what should have been a relaxed social experience became rushed
WOW! this place is fantastic.. the food was amazing, came almost instantally and the dishers were absolutely HUGE! one of our favourite japanese resturants in Auckland at the moment, I look forward to going back this weekend for a start.

When I raised my disappointment the manager she didn’t know how to deal with it. Completely unprofessional service, will never go back.
We both left feeling hungry and had to go into Wagamama’s to finish our lunch.
