Velvet Burger has arrived in Auckland!

. . . When a few lads bought the very famous Captain Cook Tavern in Dunedin, they found hiding in one of the walls of the pub, an old recipe book of Captain James Cook which he had called the “Velvet Burgers”.

Totally stoked by this discovery the boys reprinted the ancient menu and Velvet Burger was born. Check out Velvet Burger to taste a wee slice of New Zealand history.

Quite simply – delicious burgers and fries with good service.
Table service needs some attention.

Worst burger ever! Order a Big Bird, got a BIG bun, got stuff all chicken, maybe the size of a golf ball lumped in the middle, never go there again, would have been better of at Maccas for a third of the price!

The restaurant started well with great burgers and service. However, the last couple of times I have been there the burgers have taken a long time to get to me. Good burgers but the service is slow.

Had the Velvet burger as I was keen to see what the venison tasted like.

Didn’t have to wait too long. Strangely got my burger before the guy who was already waiting when I arrived (maybe he had a bigger order…).

Burger was hot, fresh, and tasty. Nice, crisp veges, properly cooked pattie, slightlyspicy chilli-mayo=all good. Would eat again.

The volume of the music playing in shop could be turned down a notch or two to make ordering/conversation easier.

I’ve had Velvet Burger heaps of times during my study in Dunedin, so was pretty stoked when they decided to open a branch here. We’ve had its burgers several times and introduced friends to them as well. I would have to say the burgers still taste the same, so the quality is still there. However, eating there is not a pleasant experience, as many tables are not cleared after its customers. Maybe they are understaffed, I don’t know? But it’s definitely an unpleasant sight…

First time customers, got a burger each to takeaway and were sorely disappointed. Yes the buns are big but the filling is lacking – just one onion ring and one slice of tomato in my Endeavour burger! The fish was luke-warm and the dressing needed more salt. $12 and I was still hungry afterwards.

Simply the best burger I ever ate! Fast and friendly service from the team, beautiful burger. I hope they kept their standard! (too bad if they are not as what the first review said).

Based on my visit in Jan 2011: fast, friendly service. Something for the meaties, veggies & vegans. Velvet Lady & Animal Rights (mushroom) were delicious! Also sell booze. Shame if the standard has dropped (as mentioned below) as they have a good thing going here.

We have tried this crowd several times. Initially the standard of food was awesome, but over the period Jan 2011 to Mar 2011 the service has quickly declined and the quality of food is now appalling. Concept great, tried very hard to accept that would get better, but unfortunately not :( , grossly understaffed.
