Went to the Yellowhouse cafe today for the first time and bought a regular flat white for $4. I could tell that the milk used was ‘recycled’ and therefore had a unpleasant burnt flavor. I have heard good things about their food before so I might go back to try it out some other time… I definitely won’t be wasting my money on the coffee there again.

Had breakfast there on a sunny Saturday before heading to Wanganui market. Beautiful building, friendly staff, good atmosphere. Great Eggs benedict! The mushrooms were so flavorsome and the staff very helpful with my two young fussy eaters. Def go there again next time we visit.

Went here again in February. Service was adequate, however one of the wait staff clearly smoked heavily and frequently – this was most evident when she breathed over us or even walked by. The other wait person was inexperienced, bring my wine to the table, opening and pouring it without even offering a taste. The final annoyance was my partner being told she could not have more bread as it would spoil her appetite. Wanganui has little choice in restaurants, hence my return this time; but I won’t be giving it another chance. Its a pity as the menu is fine and the setting quite pleasant. Well-meaning but poor service is not enough compensation.

I visited Yellow House twice, once in late October 2009. The place was moderately full. It has a pleasant ambience. The service was adequate, with the waiter needing some more confidence to engage with the diner. I am actually very interested in the specials and the wine list and it would be nice for the waiter to talk to me sensibly about this. The food was fine for Wanganui. To finish I almost invariably have cheese – its not good enough for this to be taken out of the fridge just before serving – cheese should be at room temperature.
I returned in early January. We dined alone that evening, which was odd. The service was good, the waiter on this occasion being a little more engaging. Again the cheese was disappointing – the actual cheese is fine by New Zealand standards, though there are much better choices – but it was straight out of the fridge!

Wow – Fantastic flavoursome food for every course. Cafe looked lovely transformed into fine dining at night. Service friendly but could do with some training for staff. Will definitely return.
