We were very excited when this place opened because it is so ‘child’ friendly with the karts, but the food was a total and expensive letdown. $10 for a thin pancake was excessive to say the least, as was the prices for the drinks. Our ‘Schnitzel’ was a $25 chewy piece of thick meat we couldn’t eat. It is a shame as it is the perfect place to go with family, but if you want your kids to eat it will cost a fortune. Please consider a reasonably priced kids menu ($8 is the average in New Plymouth) and we’ll be back!

Too stupid for words. I hope there wil be no next time and please tell all your friends. Since 3 months we do not have Schnitzel on the menu because the quality the Kiwi Butcher have supplied was bad. I really do not know why on earth you have to post a review…    More »

we have spent some time in Taranaki and visited this restaurant a couple of times. It is a good spot after a hike. Food was really great and we even played the guitar.
The people are so nice and friendly. I am looking forward to go there again.

Nice atmosphere. Gute Atmosphere.

We went with our local group for a End of Year Function. We were served a buffet 3 course meal that was scrumptious. The restaurant is like a mountain chalet and the view of the mountain from the huge window is amazing.
We must come back with our grandchildren so they can play on the peddle carts, flying fox and eat pancakes.

When I first called in they were closed. This guy opened up for two of us just to have a beer and watch the sun go down on the mountain. Had a great chat and ended up having a delicious pancake and an exellent evening alround. We were just strangers then but friends now and have been back several times. Good wholesome food and good people.

Volcanoview is a great place to take your kids of any age. The food is really good and the pancakes are yummy (and very filling). Good and honest food besides the pancakes.
They make an absolutely awesome cup of coffee!

We have been here quite a few times and will keep coming back as often as we can.

There are lots of peddle-power go-karts for kids to play with and the 80 mtr !! long flying fox is really cool. Our kids always play while the grown-ups can enjoy the views of the mountain and some fresh air.

Joep, the owner is a funny guy but I don’t thinks he’s as funny as Basil Fawlty though (as implied by another reviewer…), if he was, I would probably never want to leave being a big fan of John Cleese.

We have always found the service to be outstanding and very forth-coming, (certainly not rude).
Keep up the good work guys!

I have visited this Restaurant every time when visiting New Plymouth ( about six times now). It’s a great place to eat. It’s everything but formal and has honest food and some very very nice Dutch pancakes. They have good wines but do not expect a large range as it;s not that kind of restaurant. The kids will love it and Mam and Dad have some time to talk and enjoy the food and the view. A pancack with Bacon and cheese is my favorite. The guy who asked for the wine list was at the wrong place hahaha. why is he so negative and goes back 4 times????

The owner is a hard working and funny guy who likes to talk to his guests and if (who doesn’t make a mistake) something is wrong he can handle a complaint.

I would say go check it out but do not eat all my pancakes
Cheers. Marc

What a warm atmosphere, nice food and friendly staff. Coffee was as I like it and the view…super. My kids played for over 1 hour and meanwhile I could read the Daily News and my book. Lunch was a party for the kids. They – 3 boys age 4-8 – were allowed to bake their own pancake. I ordered a “prutje”. Something I have never had before. Great food and the funny owner told me the secrets of the recipe. Pity we live so far up North otherwise I would come here every week.

Been 5 times but never again.
Once before I had had call to critique a dish; the French Onion soup was far too hot (Boiling).
In general the food was nice, but it is a shame about the inferior service and the surly owner. (Basil Fawlty has nothing on this bloke?) The bar waiter has a poor knowledge of what is available, the wine list is very limited and budget priced.
Our evening was a total disaster; every thing that could possibly go wrong went wrong, starting with the consistently sloppy service: incorrect drinks order, incorrect entrée served, and after asking the waiter to twice repeat back our mains order, he still got it wrong and totally forgot one meal, (seems that 3 out of 4 is OK?) no cutlery, no water…
But what ever you do, DON’T comment on the lack of professionalism while waiting for your belated meal, or you may be told, like I was, to not keep complaining and that if I don’t like it I don’t have to eat there!
If you like poor service and to be insulted in a public place, this is a place to go. Me? I walked out there and then in disgust!
ps If you go there with small children, be aware that the owner has strung barbed wire over the top of the low fences all around the restaurant and play ground to deter kids from climbing over them…

– UPDATE –
Hi Joep.
Your surly arrogance is getting the better of you.
You simply can not cope with plain and simple critique.
The spurious and slanderous comment on the Accommodation web site was a pathetic cheap shot, but was to be expected from you.
Nice to see that your close friends have posted flattering comments here…

Should any one from Menu Mania want to contact me for a copy of your belated and apologetic email where you admitted that your staff were at fault, I will be pleased to forward it too them.
And my name is Tim, not George, you cant even get that right.

When reading a review like this one it is difficult not to react. First of all Tim B. is not Tim but George Busby, the owner of Wassail Brauhaus B&B in Egmont Village. Yes George and his wife and friends (Bryan H. 20/7/2011) have been here four or five times and…    More »

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Volcano View. Charming European atmosphere combined with spectacular views of Mt. Taranaki and green pastures. Great service, Food and Coffee!! The available space makes it perfect for larger groups but table for two just as nice. Will return soon and next time bring little people to enjoy the karts! Definately worth the country drive. Well Done!

I love coming here! The whole back wall of the cafe is glass looking straight at the mountain and the view is stunning! The food is scrumptious and I really recommend the meaty stews – great on these freezing winter days. We went up this week with all the snow and it was magic :) . To the other reviews, the wine selection seems great so not sure what that was about, and for cheap kids meals, go to McDonalds and enjoy the atmosphere and view there. . . Yeah, right! This is not a crappy fast food place, this is a restaurant. The only one in Taranaki where kids are truly catered for and welcomed, while adults can enjoy adult surroundings. I definitely give Volcano View five stars for this.

Went with friends for dinner My husband e mailed ahead to see if they were byo wine was told they had an extensive wine list and if we bought our own we would be charged 20 dollars corkage. Arrived at restaurant to find one red one white or a caraffe was the ‘extensive wine list’ Would not bother here again

We enjoyed the location and over all idea of this cafe and the food was good. We do have one “gripe” we had three children with us aged 9, 4 and 3 years. The 3 & 4 year old had hotdog and chips which costs $11.00 each so sorry but we thought $11.00 was a rather expensive for 1 hotdog and a few chips. In addition a glass of lemonade was $4.00, once again a bit steep for under 5 year olds. We wouldn’t return here with children and its a shame as the karts they have on offer is a good idea, do you want kids or not?
