4 Reviews for Vudu Cafe
I ordered a banana cake and it was delicious although the serving was TINY.
It seems it’s cool and trendy to appear to be a cool and trendy cafe, you know having a range of gluten and dairy free or vegetarian options, using organic ingredients and playing Kora or Shapeshifter in the background.
Queenstown seems to have a lot of bars/cafes with really narrow doorways – some equipped with large doorways but with split doors and 1 door closed creating the facade of a narrow doorway. Inside there’s a couple of “culturally inappropriate” sized booths and the rest of the dining area is made up of fairly standard, albeit slightly uncomfortable wooden chairs and tables.
The coffee in the place wasn’t too bad, I’ve certainly had worse, but being a Wellingtonian I’ve had better as well. But considering where we are in the South Island, it was a pretty decent cup.
We ordered breakfast – I had eggs benedict with a side of mushrooms. Which is kind of where all my problems began. When you order something stated as a side on the menu, you don’t expect it not to be on the side.
Eggs Bene is typically stacked, and I expected a side to be just that … on the side. Instead they had positioned my “SIDE” on the INside, between a couple of pieces of ciabatta. My first issue with this is that typically, freshly cooked mushrooms usually have a lot of juices … and that would have soaked the ciabatta – and it did … a little bit (and if you’ve read previous reviews of mine, you’d see I have an issue with soggy bread/toast).
Fortunately or unfortunately, these weren’t freshly cooked mushrooms. In fact, most of them were still fridge cold (some managing to warm up from toast association).
In the end, my side that wasn’t actually a side because it was inside, never made it to my insides. They instead, sat, ironically, on the side of my plate. When I mentioned the stone cold mushrooms to the person behind the counter, as I was ordering more coffee to takeaway, I got a “sorry about that” and that was it. Nothing more appeared to be done about it – at the very least, nothing was done to make up for the fact that I had spent $4 on a side that was too cold to be eaten.
Will not be returning in any great hurry, even if I don’t find better coffee anywhere else.

The consistency is amazing. Never had a bad coffee, the food is second to none and the service is always a treat.
Impressed with all the new gluten free options and the change to organic coffee.

Not in a hurry to go back but would still visit if I have spare time.
