I give Wang Gok 4 stars as it seems to be the best Asian restaurant in town. That should tell you a lot about the general low quality of the food on offer in restaurants across the town seeing that at least half of the restaurants are offering asian food.
Back to Wang Gok, the waitress was quite happy to explain a few things and answered all our queries constructively. I did miss a bottle of water at lunchtime though. The kitchen is close, so you can hear when they’re preparing your food, which is a good thing in my opinion – that way you know it’ll be a fresh meal. It did bother me when a bunch of Chinese people rushed into the restaurant and started talking loudly all over.
The meals were medium sized portions, nothing generous. The chicken with mushrooms I ordered tasted very good, and it actually reminded me of premium quality Chinese restaurants you find across Europe. Next time I’ll ask for some extra vegetables as well, as apparently they’re willing to customise your meal should you wish something special.
All in all, I’d say this is the best restaurant in town, period, especially with the reasonable prices they have.

After months of driving past this restaurant and seeing it busy every time, my family and I finally decided to go inside to try it out on a Sunday afternoon. Upon arrival, we were politely welcomed by the waitress. She directed us to our table and provided two different menus (a dining menu and a takeaway menu). Despite wanting to take our order after five or six minutes looking at the menus, this helped us greatly, as she was very helpful in explaining what some of the dishes were, and was also helpful regarding a nut allergy. All in all, very good service from the waitress.
The food came out fairly quickly, and despite coming out one dish at a time, there was never a time when there was no food on our table. The dishes we ordered were absolutely great – cooked very well and with no bad pieces of meat in any of them. We all agreed that this was tied for first for our favourite Chinese restaurant (the other being Golden Harvest, but that is rather expensive).
The food was so good we each complimented the chef and I have booked my birthday here for the following week. Overall, a very enjoyable experience.
All of the food was great and at a very reasonable price ($56 for three dishes from the main menu and two from the takeaway menu). I highly recommend this restaurant as they feature some authentic dishes which tasted amazing, such as Szechuan Pork, and garlic pork spare ribs, and Nazi Goreng.

I was part of a group of ten that were booked for a friends birthday. The restaurant was very busy. We got pushed into a separate dining room that was not set up with utensils or such. Took them a while to bring menus, then we got told that we had to get our own water from the counter. We asked for the separate takeaway menus as well as these are better priced options. This also took quite some time to get to us, then they tried to get us order only 5 minutes later.
Our food started coming out slowly an hour later but one dish was wrong. The very rude waitress yelled at us that the dish was right though it plainly wasn’t, and it took a lot of arguing from our side to have it taken back. The meals came out very slowly. The owner came in to tell one of us that the duck was all out (an hour after ordering it!). The waitress was rude again for dessert as a couple of us said we didn’t want any but she didn’t wait for the rest to answer and held up her hand and raced off. To top it off the waitress refused to apologise for her behaviour (shoving past us as we left) AND the eftpos went down. The meal I had (chicken and cashew on rice) was nice though and only $10 for which I gave them an extra star. For a birthday dinner though it was one to remember for all the wrong reasons.

Ok… where do I begin?? Maybe with the rude staff? The hair in my food which they said I placed there myself? Or the blatantly overpriced menu which failed to exceed expectations….??
Because when I booked my group of friends there for dinner last night, all of the above occured and not once did we recieve an apology for the rude comments the staff directed at us… their PAYING customers!!
On arrival I was harrassed by the older lady when a few members of my booking did not show… Now how exactly is this MY fault?? If they intend on turning away paying customers due to a booking, prehaps they should consider making bookings pay some sort of bond to avoid this happening again in the future….
Even though the welcoming we recieved was less then desirable, we stayed on to eat.
We then ordered our meals…we were asked to pay $14 each even if the usual price was$7??…. Whats wrong with this picture?!
My meal came out first (about 30 mins after I ordered) the next meal followed about 20 mins later. I had finifshed my meal by the time the SECOND meal came out…. Let alone the 10th meal which came as we were ready to leave.
I discovered a thin black hair in my meal, approached the kitchen about it, I was then told that I had PLANTED the hair in there myself.. even though I am blonde. This is the definition of rude.
We will never be returning here again. What was suppose to be a nice realaxing evening meal with friends turned in to a horrible dining experience.

We arrived to Dunedin quite late and wanted to quickly find somewhere to eat. Wong Gok looked nice from the outside and the Takeaway-menu advertised outside fooled us into thinking that we’d get good value for our money.
The ambience is alright, nothing special or romantic, but clean and comfortable. Unfortunately the kitchen is in the dining part of the restaurant, thus making it a little smelly and, at times, noisy.
The meals (chicken and beef, respectively) arrived on big plates, quite generous helpings. Apparently, however, in the price of around 15 NZD per meal, there is no rice included, so we had to order that extra (4 dollars for a nice big bowl that was enough for us).
As said, the quantity of the food was alright, the sauce tasted good, but unfortunately the quality of the meat was, in both cases, deplorable. It was without doubt the worst meat I had in a long time and at times downright disgusting. Not rotten, but a strange shape and texture. Not very nice.
All in all, for this quality of food, the prices are too high; I’ve had better Chinese food in much cheaper places.

Had chicken with cashew nuts. The vegetables could have been more versatile instead of regular frozen veg – broccoli, cauliflower, carrot.
Meat was less firm than what I’m used to but tasted great nonetheless.
For $8 lunch the portion was big enough, couldn’t eat much more than was on my plate and have been reasonably full for quite some time afterwards.
The staff is friendly and gladly answer questions. The restaurant was empty and more or less quiet.
Would appreciate a glass or a bottle of water on the side. Otherwise, great value for money.
Will definitely come for lunch again, also can’t wait to try fried banana with ice cream.
