Their Gluten Free Vegetable Frittata is a-mazing! Tasty as gooey spinach-y centre. Cool retro stylings in cafe. Yet to try anything else but will stop again for sure.

While traveling with my family around the North Island on holiday we were very lucky to have found the Chef (Mike)at this restaurant. The BBQ sauce on the $10 entree chicken wings was, I was told, the Chefs secret recipe and 2 servings with some pate was a glimpse of the amazing meal that was to follow. The main chicken dish had amongst other flavours, grapes through it and I can still taste the flavours. My wife had the Pork belly because alot of other diners seemed to be. She was very delighted and the kids had beautiful perfectly medium rare Eye and Scotch steaks. Now the unfortunate let down: the owner. If it wasn’t for the lovely banter of the older Maori lady and the fact that the Chef came and was enquiring how peoples meals were the overall experience would not have been pleasant for a young family. The owner was more busy getting obviously drunk and at one stage came out smelling like “herbal” cigarettes. He couldn’t settle up our bill and had to call for assistance from another staff member as he was too intoxicated to work the till. My advise for him: stay away and let the Chef and great staff run the show. Maybe 5 stars next time

I went during the day for lunch. There was only one staff memeber that made an effort – she was the older one I think her name was maggie. The food was okay but was so dissapointed with service from a younger female waitress. she seemed more interested in her hair then anything! Would not go again unless older waitress is there.

After many years in the hospitality industry I had always been wary of Internet reviews, I had considered them an outlet of uninformed opinion, But after my experience yesterday I realise its also a way to get your message out there.
I went to Workmans Cafe yesterday, Good Friday, The woman at the till overcharged me by a few dollars, When I brought this to her attention, she laughed, consulted with guy on the coffee machine and then informed me that there was also a holiday surcharge.
Turns out the holiday surcharge was to be a whopping 50%!
$61.60 for a long black, Two glasses of pinot and fish and chips?
So if I hadn’t of pointed out her over-charge would I of got my order for the $40 that it should of cost?
Since the surcharge wasn’t advertised It difficult to know.
But in addition to a dirty cafe, badly made coffee and impolite staff it makes for a very over priced afternoon snack.
I’ve worked in the industry for 13 years and in three different countries and have never heard of a %50 surcharge.
Oh well, I guess never going back and telling every one I know not to back is all I can do.
How this place won Cafe of year a few years ago is beyond me.

The place needs a good clean, the tables were sticky and smeared, the cups were in need of throwing out, I almost couldnt drink out of mine for looking at the chips and stains, come on, you can do better, for winning best cafe, I was disapointed, coffee very average.
