Avondale
27/05/2012We were quite excited about placing our first order at Curry King after reading all the rave reviews on Menu Mania “best Indian in Auckland” etc. Especially as there is really little to no choice when it comes to good takeaway food in the Avondale area, unless of course you like bad fish and chips. We were also pleased to to hear that they deliver. Bonus! Anyway – our food came roughly on time but was a disappointment. The mango chicken was super sweet with loads of sauce and very little meat. The lamb saagwala was sightly better but also swimming in sauce with very little meat. Both dishes were lacking in that flavour punch you expect from a good curry. Also our naan bread was uninspired with some of the dough still looking uncooked. Wont be ordering again unfortunately. Back to the drawing board I’m afraid.

25/05/2012Officially the worst Noodle Canteen in history. I can deal with the terrible service but when I waste $10.20 on chunks of cabbage on flavourless rice I get rather frustrated. This was my second attempt with the Quay St Noodle Canteen and both times they have failed to provide the dish which every other noodle canteen seems to have down to a T. I will not be back.

24/05/2012Have been twice. Pizza is above average but not exceptional. The music in the restaurant is so astonishingly loud that you struggle to communicate at the counter which doesn’t help either. I should point out that I’m a former heavy rock drummer so not averse to loud music – in context! The woman who served me was also so distracted and abrupt that she came off as quite rude. Probably wouldn’t bother going again.

23/05/2012The day we went to Palm Beach Fish and Chips it was a hot sunny day and the pre-battered fish was left out to defrost uncovered in the open air, whilst the place was swarming with flies. I begrudge giving it even one star!

19/05/2012Pluses: - Very fresh fish - Good sized portions - Great taste Minuses: - None Interesting: - They have a range of fresh fish available that can be selected from the window then cooked on site Verdict: - This has become our regular chippy as it’s much better than anything else in the area.

18/05/2012Delicious! I had the Thai Green Curry, and my friend had the Laksa – we really enjoyed both meals. Way better than our local Asian restaurants. Lots of sauces to choose from, and you can mix and match your vegetables or meat etc. We want to work our way through all of them… Cool machines too. We will certainly be back!!

16/05/2012Not sure why it’s taken me so long to review Burger Fuel, as I’ve been a customer of theirs for many years. But my last visit there has prompted me to finally write this, as it must be said that the quality of their food and service has slowly but surely gone down the gurgler. I knew they were taking a turn for the worse when they started charging for aioli! Damn you!! But really.. Chips are consistenly undercooked or cold or both. Buns often stale. Salad – great chunks of onion and a soggy old piece of lettuce anyone? What once were wonderful hand made patties with crispy edges and great beef flavour, are now machine made, perfectly circular, mushy, bland and grey. Don’t even remind me of what the bacon looks and tastes like… Just yuck. I still given them two stars though, because in all honestly I will probably go back there at 2am on a Saturday morning.

11/05/2012We are regular customers with Miro’s however this time we received a very undersized piece of fish in our order (about half size of what it should have been) and phoned them to raise our concerns straight away…to cut long story short they were argumentative (saying the other fish was probably over sized) and defensive (saying we don’t measure the fish so every piece is different) and he actually hung up on me. We will never purchase takeaways from them again

10/05/2012I love Jesters Pies. Less fat & calories = Less guilt. Sure, they’re not your average Kiwi pie… but once you get used to their ‘jaffle-puff’ pastry, they’re great. My 3 year old LOVES the Kiwi Classic (mince), and I love the “Mother Hubbard” – salmon. Always helpful staff. A nice clean environment to sit & eat a pie.

09/05/2012The gourmet burgers were terribly. The bun was very basic, a minimal piece of bacon and not much else. Ordered the larger size chips, that was a pathetic amount.Should have gone to our regular Burger Wisconsin where you get good quality and quantity. I feel this place ripping off people offering deals for a product that is far from being gourmet. Don’t get fooled by the fancy website and branding. I suspect any good feed back was concocted.

08/05/2012Used a two-for-one GrabOne voucher to get two Gourmet Sirloin Steak Angus burger (as this was the only burger permitted in the Gourmet range) and was disappointed to find a really thing slab of patty. The taste was okay, but the bread felt “powdery” giving the impression that it has been kept for a while already hence losing moisture. I’m not sure if a normal priced (without a two for one voucher) would give me a thicker, and meatier patty, but considering they market themselves via GrabOne, this isn’t a good look and could drive customers away if they continued to serve different portion to voucher customers.

05/05/2012Gluten free heaven! Many takeaway outlets offer one or two token items for coeliacs, but this place is full of choices. I had fish, potato fritters and kumara chips, all delicious. Despite being pretty busy we only waited 20 minutes and the staff/owner still found time to say g’day and thanks to every customer. My husband thought I was mad wanting to go that far for fish and chips but it was well worth the drive from the north shore. We’ll be back!

05/05/2012What a tremendous fish burger! So full of good old kiwi-style beetroot, tomato, lettuce, onion, cheese, egg and the freshly flavoured battered fish. Chips were just beautiful, and not over-salted, which was a big bonus, as I was taking them home for my daughter. Actually, it was fantastic that the burger was not over-salted either, but a packet of salt was included in with the chips – and I did add some salt to my burger coz I love a bit of extra seasoning. I was just planning on taking away, but felt the atmosphere was so groovy and comfortable, that I sat at one of the high wooden tables to enjoy my burger right there instead. Lovely warm mood-lighting, lots of polished wood in the decor, and complimentary tomato sauce on each of the three tables, in the form of the classic Kiwiana big round tomato sauce squeezy bottles. First time I’ve seen that this century! Each table had a wee “Footrot Flats” cartoon book on it. Walls adorned with Kiwiana paraphenalia – but not overdone. What a cool place. There’s also a two-seater couch in front of a playstation, for customers to play while waiting – an appropriately modern update to the old “Spacies” we used to play as kids back in the eighties when waiting for our Friday night fish & chips! I phoned in my order before hopping on the motorway from the city – so off at Market Rd, and straight thru the lights to the Parking behind the shop (pretty bright red signage on building) was real easy. Staff were bubbly. This place is really truly great.

04/05/2012Pretty weird little joint. I went after they had just opened so they might have improved by now but I’m not in any hurry to go back. I suspect the place was opened by a couple of mates who wanted to give it a go, which is commenable, but unfortunately did not translate to a good burger experience. Their menu is terrible, far too extensive and unnecessarily complicated, not to mention the spelling mistakes. Why not just do a handful of burgers and make sure you do them WELL? Our burgers took a good 20 minutes, were poorly constructed and lacked flavour. Chips were soggy. Sorry guys.

02/05/2012We used the grabone voucher here. Staff were very friendly. We had the butter chicken mild with a naan and a lamb roganjosh – both meals were absolutely delicious and the kids loved it! Will be going back there for dinner tonight! Definitely worth a try
