Service and the steaks were average. My madagascar steak looked like a few chucks of meat drenched with chili flavoured crushed tomato and due to the uneven cut of the meat, some part was well done, another was medium and the other was rare (3 in 1 within the same steak, mite b a deal to some). My partner ordered beef terayaki, nicely done although the waiter forgot to put 3 more pieces of the cut up steak on the plate, thus looked like kids portion of meat initially (u can count the number of the little meat cubes with one hand). He was given the other 3 pieces when he went to the salad bar to get more salad and the cook noticed the left over meat was still sitting on the bench. Salad bar was a bit suspicious. Watery curry eggs but tasted alright. Glad that we bought the meal with more than 50% discount voucher. This visit reminds me why we never been back to this place after our 1st visit more than 4 years ago.

I’ve never eaten here, but went in once to see if they had roasts. They didn’t, but gosh, the barman interrupted his discussion helping explain plasma TVs to an old lady, and gave me a great outline of the nearest places that DID serve roasts! Now THAT sort of “service” really impresses. I’ll try to actually sample his own fare next time. ;-)

The food here is delicious but the service is quite appalling. They are overstaffed, but under-trained. We had a booking for 5 for a birthday party & were told when we arrived that someone had called to cancel our booking (which certainly hadn’t been us) but they would do their best to accommodate us. We shared 2 entrees & 5 mains and ALL were delicious, but as soon as we had finished our mains we were asked to leave. It was a birthday party, we’d only been there an hour and we weren’t allowed to order dessert? Seriously?! No explanation was given at the table, but when we went to pay we asked why we couldn’t order dessert & were told by another staff member that a party of 11 that had cancelled had arrived anyway and they were short staffed now. Firstly, am I to believe that they had 2 bookings cancel & then arrive anyway? It sounds like whoever takes their bookings severely screwed up. Secondly, was our table supposed to leave to accommodate another table that came in after us? This makes no sense & although the food is great, I will NOT be back. I suggest the chef find a better home

I’ve been a regular patron of Modaks over the last year or so popping in on every business trip down from Christchurch. Up until this morning my experiences have always been good. This morning, on arrival, I greeted the red-haired employee with a hello and in return got a snort of derision and disdain which immediately put me in a defensive mood. So not a good start. Then she botched the “bacon and poached eggs” order – I received bacon (with pigs black hairs still poking out) and scrambled eggs, and instead of brown toast received ciabatta which was no deal breaker as the friendly chap in the kitchen discussed the change before bringing the food out. So now I must admit I was annoyed: unfriendly, unhelpful service and my overly-”complicated” order botched. So when mentioning the order mistake to aforementioned red-haired waitress, imagine my surprise when I received a very surly “do you want a refund or what?” response. I’ll take a refund and go to The Strictly Coffee Company thank you! (no apology, no effort to reconcile issue: the chap in the kitchen, however, was friendly, helpful and sincere in his efforts… What a stark contrast between the two staff members) I won’t be going back.

I thought I saw “Roast of the Day” on their menu a few months back, so I visited one lunchtime, only to be met with a blank look, and “no, sorry, no roast”. Then recently I noticed on MenuMania that someone had HAD a Roast of the Day. I rang and confirmed, seems they DO (and it was suggested that last time I visited perhaps they were just out of stock that day). I asked if available Mon-Fri and was told no, Tue-Fri. Their menu and info on here says 7 days. Well, sorry, I’m really not going to bother going thru all the hoops again. :-(

“$10 lunches” appear to nowadays be $11.50. I had chicken fried rice – good service and good food, but too much for me. (I wish they’d offer “small” versions, for $8 or $9). Pleasant atmosphere and surroundings, but was rather noisy, being a busy lunchtime.

This place came highly recommended from many of my friends, so I thought it would be a good idea to check it out. When we walked in we were very warmly welcomed by a smiley waitress who took us to our table I had previously booked. I ordered the bangers and mash, and my husband ordered the lamb shacks. It came out in good time and we were very impressed! The food was divine and my husband thoroughly enjoyed his meal too. We passed on desert, but next time we go around I will be sure to try their sponge cake.

We had a meal at Customhouse recently and were extremely diappointed with the very poor attitude and service of the staff. When we were shown to our table, the girl more or less pointed at the table and left us. A young male served us and seemed rushed. He was not able to tell us about the menu meals…telling us he was new. One of us ordered flounder and we were then told flounder had run out. When ordering a sticky date pudding with icecream, he came back to ask if we would mind having sorbet with it instead of icecream as they had run out of icecream!!! (What restaurant runs out of something so basic). We said not to worry we would just have coffee. This was served with no sugar and when we requested some the girl said yes…but you guessed it, it just NEVER arrived. We mentioned this when paying our bill…no apology, nothing. We will not return for a meal here again.

I can’t agree more with the comment made by Lynda. Their high tea was a joke. We paid $50 for four of us (this was supposed to be a half price deal) and got a cup of tea each (made from a bag) and a selection of finger food that was hardly enough for two people. No sandwiches, no scones. And overall the food was mediocre. (they served us biscuits obviously bought in a supermarket). Also their advertising was false. They said it was a half price deal but they did not actually have this on their menu at all.

I love Malaysian food and this was some of the best I’ve eaten outside of Malaysia, the roti was very authentic, perfectly flaky, and the dipping sauce was delicious. We variously had beef curry, masala thosai (hope I’ve spelled that correctly!) and a seafood noodle dish which I cannot remember the name of, but all were excellent, everyone was very impressed with the flavours and the authenticity. I had read the previous reviews on this website, I’m not sure how old they are, but the service was fine, there were a few large groups there so we expected a bit of a wait for our food and we did not think the wait was excessive at all. Overall, this was an excellent meal and I cannot wait to go back to try more of the great-looking menu!

Owned by the loveliest two Japanese ladies who are always willing to make fresh sushi on demand. Also, have tried one of their Party Platters which were delicious! Only $6 for their fresh sushi, way better than Savoury Japan but still the same price. They also serve gyoza (steamed or fried dumplings), takeaway katsu chicken and I think teriyaki chicken too. Tiny wee place but definitely worth going just past the Octagon. The best sushi place in Dunedin!

I and the family thoroughly enjoy going to Mojos. Food is great, service is fast and access even with wee ones is so convenient. It is a place I always recommend and feel confident doing so.

Went to HighTea at Madly British. Found the experience rather disappointing. The pot of tea was fine. But we then waited 40 minutes for the cakes etc to arrive. (after half an hour my daughter enquired as to whether they were going to be long). I asked for more hot water and had a cup of lukewarm weak tea with my food. There were no egg sandwiches as advertised. There were supermarket small pavlovas not advertised. There was a small bowl of jam…..not sure what for, some tired looking wee cakes and the tomato sandwiches and cucumber ones were very plain. On top of that there were no side plates. All in all an unusual experience.

Just had the most amazing food and great service at the Rainforest here in Dunedin. When I read the negative reviews on here I was a bit dubious but I was blown away by the exciting flavours, fresh ingredients and stunning food. Ignore all the bad reviews and make a booking is my advice. I am just sorry it has taken me this long to eat at this restaurant and I will definitely be going again! If you are worried it is all spicy food never fear as you can have a range non spicy to the hottest and spiciest food. We made the wise choice and shared our dishes amongst 7 of us and that way we got to try a bit of everything. Reasonable prices too.

waited an hour for our meal. our main was brought out without our starter. our starter arrived after 1 hr 10 mins.. seafood chowder, watery, luke warm and tasted of parsley. mains – pie and fish and chips, very average $64 later.. not impressed. wrote a letter to the manager about the poor standard of service and food, got a one liner back and that was it. dont think i will be going here again any time soon..

Went to this friendly restaurant, on the 15th of May for my birthday dinner – although we were the only 4 in the place, it was a relaxing night out enjoyed with my daughter and a few friends. We had a very very lovely polite waitress, who we had a few laughs with. The menu is just wonderful, we found that usually there’s only certain things we could have of menus at restaurants but I couldn’t make my mind up at all. My daughter was very happy to hear she got a free dessert with her children meal – and we were very pleased with the massive meals we received. We will definitely be returning to Duufa’s on Factory. Soooo relaxing!

Just a quick note to thank Plato for providing a benchmark standard when it comes to service. Last night we were given some of the warmest and accommodating service I’ve experienced. Thank you for your professionalism and flexibility. P.S Your food was also very good!!

I have dined at Etrusco twice and both times I have left disappointed. The first time I had a pasta which was of a low standard, I probably could have done a better job at home. The second time I decided to try the pizza. Firstly there was a lack of variety among the pizza. They were all rather similar, give or take a few ingredients. I thus decided on a pizza that had mushroom, pepperoni and basil. It was the medium size, although it was 20 dollars. It was not nearly filling enough and I felt slightly ripped off. I have definitely eaten better pizzas for a cheaper price in Dunedin. Both times the service was slow, although the wait staff were still pleasant.

I came here for lunch and my first thought was that there was a huge amount of choice. The brunch menu was available till 3 and there was also tapas, light meals and gourmet pizzas to choose from on top of the lunch menu. I picked the crispy chicken wrap while my friend chose the pasta of the day, which was a salmon and pine nut pasta. The food was cooked quickly, although we went at a very quiet time. My meal was good and my friend thoroughly enjoyed her pasta. The service was good. Overall a pleasant experience, I would definitely return!
